osipovas··on Neeva Announces Public Availability of Its Ads Free, Private Search Engine
Looks like they're doing some sort of geo-filtering. I wasn't able to sign up from Canada.
osipovas··on A Boring Announcement: Free Tunnels for Everyone
In the examples they provide at the bottom of the article - my instant reaction is - these tunnels can replace ngrok tunnels.
osipovas··on Twilio Is Down
Yeah according to our logs, our messages started failing to send at Feb 26 13:01:24 UTC.
osipovas··on Ask HN: How do you watch for health emergencies for elder family members?
If you're in the USA - Snug Safety is a great option for seniors living alone who are not ready or don't want a Life Alert necklace.

Website: https://snugsafe.com

Snug is available for Android (Google Play) and iOS (iPhone only).

Disclaimer: I currently work on Snug Safety. Please send any questions to support@snugsafety.com and we'll definitely be able to answer them.

osipovas··on Jacquard by Google
What does it say about Alphabet that I expected to see a: We're closing down Project Jacquard. After clicking the link...
osipovas··on Neverware is now part of Google
This will be frustrating when Google decides (as they always do) to stop supporting the older hardware. I use the Home Edition for my parent's computer. The update process is virtually seamless for my parents and it just works.

What to do when they end support...

osipovas··on Google Pay reimagined: pay, save, manage expenses and more
Why did they call them Plex? Come on Google! Plex is already a trademark.
osipovas··on LinkedIn will scan the browser to identify extensions
Can we get a 2019 in the title?
osipovas··on Level 3 Global Outage
A service I run on Digital Ocean was affected by this early this morning. Looks like it was mitigated by DO - so I'm very grateful for that. Although, the service I run is time sensitive so failures like this are pretty unfortunate for me. Where would I get started with building in redundancy against these sort of outages?
osipovas··on Alberta government gives green light to Calgary-Edmonton Hyperloop project
As an Albertan living in Edmonton and as per the feasibility study mentioned in the article, I don't think this is happening. That said, if by some miracle it does happen, that would be awesome!
osipovas··on Ask HN: Has anyone else seen TCP connection issues in AWS US East this week?
Maybe AWS US East is going to be the region with random failures?

"I want to have an AWS region where everything breaks with high frequency" https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24103746

osipovas··on Factorio 1.0
If you'd like to increase the depth of the production tree, consider checking out Pyanodon's mods:

osipovas··on Microsoft Said to Be in Talks to Buy TikTok, as Trump Weighs Curtailing App
Even among all this antitrust talk I'm imagining a world where Facebook ends up acquiring TikTok.
osipovas··on A Review of Neverware's Cloudready as a Possible Alternative to Chromebooks
I set up Cloudready on a Dell Optiplex 3020 for my parents. They like it and the maintenance I have to do is non existent.

Before that I had set up a ASUS CHROMEBOX-M004U. It had gotten too slow, especially with photo viewing and basic internet browsing - definitely unfortunate.

osipovas··on Modern China Is So Crazy It Needs a New Literary Genre (2016)
This should have a 2016 tag :)
osipovas··on Now Apps Can Track You Even After You Uninstall Them
Google sort of bundles this functionality into Firebase.

https://support.google.com/firebase/answer/6317485?hl=en

Check under the "app_remove" section.

Also, a blog post of how this was used in conjunction with Firebase functions.

osipovas··on Ask HN: How you did you meet your co-founder?
I started as an early employee and grew into a "co-founder".
osipovas··on Salary Negotiation
Definitely found this too. Josh Doody sounded crystal clear though.
osipovas··on Do you think coding is a “basic skill”
No, but I spoke with an elementary school teacher at a Hackathon in 2015 and he introduced me to the concept of computational thinking which I think should be taught in the class room.

osipovas··on Amazon removes encryption from the software for Kindles, phones, and tablets
A lot of these devices are low-end so I can see that removing it is two-fold benefit:

1.) Making friends with the NSA. 2.) Improving performance on their devices.

osipovas··on Does a carbon tax work? Ask British Columbia
Alberta, the neighbouring province I'm a resident of is considering something "similar". Here is a great article by Macleans: http://www.macleans.ca/economy/economicanalysis/heres-what-w...

I for one, as a citizen am in favour of shutting down coal fired plants that add to the particulate count in my air. I will gladly pay the extra $300-$500 to get rid of it :)

osipovas··on Maru turns Android smartphones into portable PCs
What cable do I buy to connect my Nexus 5 to an HDMI port? I feel that should be mentioned on the website. Will this do it:

osipovas··on Show HN: AskIzzy – a mobile website for homeless people
Definitely a good to have service. Definitely feel that updating data is the biggest challenge. We have something similar in my hometown based of Edmonton based on linksf.

osipovas··on Slack is down
What's the real world analogy to Slack being down? Locking your entire team out of the offices?

Since the start, at our company we've used Slack. We have never experienced an outage like this. Definitely a strange and uncomfortable feeling not having Slack available.

osipovas··on Google Nexus 5x and 6P
This, absolutely this!
osipovas··on Shutdownify is shutting down
How about getshutdown.com?
osipovas··on OnHub
I wonder what sort of ramifications this has for improving indoor location services for Google's connected properties.
osipovas··on For only the second time in our history the ownership of The Economist changes
My life has changed for the better since subscribing to the Economist in 2011. For me, it's not about paying for content (which is great) but for the 'feeling of being informed'.

After reading each issue I feel informed about what is going on around the world. This has sparked many conversations with people from around the world.

I hope that following this transition that 'feeling of being informed' will not go away and I have no reason to suspect it would.

If only I had local and regional news at such a calibre...

osipovas··on Windows 10 uses your bandwidth to send other people updates
They have to recoup costs since they are offering this upgrade for free. If it's saving pennies on CDN bandwidth so be it!
osipovas··on New vulnerability can put Android phones into permanent vegetative state
