orenmazor··on How We Moved Our API From Ruby to Go
so true. just reading your comment was enough to make me feel frustrated and anxious.
orenmazor··on The Dropbox terabyte conundrum
you can do this pretty easily with bittorrent sync
orenmazor··on Using Vagrant and Chef for Reproducible, Isolated Rails Development Environments
We use this at work and it's awesome. Solved a lot of big problems and a lot of little problems, like "works on my machine but not prod" and rebuilding your dev env when you switch machines. etc.

The one thing that became a problem was managing vmware (the plugin is a closed source one, so it was hard to debug any issue that came up with it - easily solved by writing our own open source one)

orenmazor··on Using Vagrant and Chef for Reproducible, Isolated Rails Development Environments
berkshelf makes this a breeze, fyi. I do it for all of my AWS instances
orenmazor··on Retiring the Netflix Public API
whats "old"? they're pushing 20 years now. that feels pretty ancient in internet time :)
orenmazor··on Vessyl, the smart cup that knows exactly what you're drinking
I keep bouncing between "this is an excellently executed troll!" and "…does this actually work?!"
orenmazor··on NASA's Next Mars Lander to Begin Construction
Is there anywhere I can go to actually see NASA's (or CSA or ESA)'s "Lessons Learned"?

I'd love to track how they've evolved different characteristics of spaceflight/rovers.

to improve my KSP game, obviously.

orenmazor··on Practical Tmux
thats terrible. starting in $PWD is the first thing I encountered that I loved about tmux as a multiplexer vs iterm
orenmazor··on Game of Thrones author George RR Martin: 'Why I still use DOS'
And now know why it's taken him so long to write each book
orenmazor··on Facebook's git repo is 54GB
when you're scaling any given variable, the stock solution is almost never good enough. you end up hitting all kinds of limits.
orenmazor··on FTL: Advanced Edition introduces Clone Bay, Hacking, Mind Control and more
Love FTL. I can't remember the last time I loved a video game this much.
orenmazor··on Npm Raises $2.6M Seed Round
Thanks for clearing it up. I knew there are technical/logical answers to all of the points people are bringing up.
orenmazor··on Verizon Using Recent Net Neutrality Victory to Wage War Against Netflix?
Oh wow. I was being tongue in cheek about us techies, but looks like Netflix beat me to it here. awesome!
orenmazor··on Verizon Using Recent Net Neutrality Victory to Wage War Against Netflix?
if only we had a distributed group of people, all of whom with a vested interest in figuring this out, that could help us with doing speed tests in variety of configurations…
orenmazor··on Do Not Upgrade Your Rails Project to Ruby 2 Before You Read This
hahahaha.

good one.

orenmazor··on Shopify Raises $100 Million
As fellow Ottawans, I think we all really appreciate hearing that. We all benefit from a stronger tech community here.
orenmazor··on I will not hack on your codebase for free in an interview
low... a good rough base for freelancing should be triple whatever the salaried hourly rate equivalent would be (i.e. $80k/year => $40/hr, so you should be charging $120).

I do give a break if I'm charging in bulk (i.e. I have a really long term ongoing project with you and we negotiate a different rate).

orenmazor··on I will not hack on your codebase for free in an interview
you charge $56/hr in a daily rate? O_o
orenmazor··on Service lets you "certify" a document using the Bitcoin blockchain
brilliant.
orenmazor··on Shopify Merchants Can Now Accept Bitcoin
The BTC support we offer is through a 3rd party merchant gateway. As a shop-owner, you are simply accepting payments via BitPay (our partner) which converts the BTC into a currency you find acceptable and deposits it into your accounts.
orenmazor··on Background Job Processing for Atheists
no, but I dont care if it's up as long as its not down :)

which, of course, leaves me hanging if the job queue is just not running, but thats monitored with runit which will issue an error if the service fails to start.

orenmazor··on Background Job Processing for Atheists
I like this idea. its the push version of the traditional uptime monitoring pull mechanism (i.e. ping endpoints).

not sure I'm a fan of using this specifically for background jobs though, as we have airbrake and splunk and other tools that detect these failures cheaply.

orenmazor··on Background Job Processing for Atheists
Wait. Santa's not real?
orenmazor··on Renault ships a brickable car with battery DRM that you're not allowed to own
So? Dont treat the automotive market the way you treat the tech market. single companies have a much, much lower affect on the market when it comes to cars.
orenmazor··on Edward Snowden is Almost Broke
So what you're telling us is that being a whistleblower and fleeing to Russia turns out to be a poor career move?
orenmazor··on International Space Station Infected With USB Stick Malware
this is why on Galactica all of their computer systems were completely disconnected from each other.
orenmazor··on Show HN: Netflix Showdown – because I can't decide what to watch
I've wanted this for a while, but I'm betting licensing is going to get messy there.

I'd be happy with just a "watch random shows from this tv category".

orenmazor··on LinkedIn ‘Intro’duces Insecurity
seriously? this is what Intro is? how is it not a bigger deal?people get upset over the littlest Facebook changes, but something this big barely shows up?
orenmazor··on Gnatsd: a high performance NATS messaging server written in Go
at first I definitely thought this was related to the old gnu bug tracker.
orenmazor··on Ask HN: Why are POS systems all POSes?
it doesn't have to be a pos! :) http://www.shopify.com/pos

obviously biased, because I work at Shopify. but this is a sweet product, and it works with your online store for inventory tracking, reports, etc.
