orenlindsey··on A site that tracks the price of a Big Mac in every US McDonald's
You should publish the dataset or provide an API to get it. I found what seems to be a dataset but it doesn't have a clear structure.
orenlindsey··on A site that tracks the price of a Big Mac in every US McDonald's
Also, the most expensive McDonald's is actually connected to a gas station, which might be part of the high price. It's actually one of two on opposite sides of the highway (for travelers in either direction). The westbound side is more expensive and the eastbound side is cheaper. Wild!
orenlindsey··on A site that tracks the price of a Big Mac in every US McDonald's
There seems to be a big area centered in Arizona where they're more expensive. There's seemingly no reason for it.
orenlindsey··on Font height differences between Windows and Mac (2019)

This explains better than I can

orenlindsey··on Font height differences between Windows and Mac (2019)
Macs are king when it comes to font rendering. It was prioritized in the original Macintosh and Apple still has the most solid font engine to this day.
orenlindsey··on I'm sorry but I cannot fulfill this request it goes against OpenAI use policy
It's been removed from Amazon.
orenlindsey··on I'm sorry but I cannot fulfill this request it goes against OpenAI use policy
Or, they're just drop-shipping stuff from China and they don't speak English so they use an AI to create a title.
orenlindsey··on I'm sorry but I cannot fulfill this request it goes against OpenAI use policy
That's crazy lol, how do the people who make these not think about what they're putting in?
orenlindsey··on Solar will supply almost all growth in U.S. electricity generation through 2025
We really shouldn't have waited this long to start transitioning to clean energy. If 2050 really is the point of no return (somewhere around then, from what I've heard), we'll have to replace over a century of infrastructure in about 20 years. And scaling is the hardest part. (we've already done some scaling, but renewables only account for ~20% of US energy, so we have to 5x that) Then, there's less developed countries, which can't fund subsidies and have unstable governments making it less likely for big infrastructure projects to get started anyways.

Not to mention oil-based economies. Many of them are just sticking their heads in the sand pretending oil will hold up their economy forever. This will be disastrous for them, and I'm sure many will lobby to stop clean energy (which will only make things worse for the planet). Only Saudi Arabia is really trying to diversify. As I said, we really should have started sooner so we could get the politics out of the way and we could just be focusing on deployment at scale today.

orenlindsey··on Hertz to sell 20k EVs in shift back to gas-powered cars
> Cybertruck vs Cybertruck crash

An unstoppable force hitting an immovable object.

orenlindsey··on Hertz to sell 20k EVs in shift back to gas-powered cars
Apparently the big problem is repair costs. They should buy Cybertrucks, those things are indestructible. One got in a head-on collision recently and didn't even get dented, no one in either car was hurt

Edit: this is a joke, by the way

orenlindsey··on Tiny nuclear battery be commercialised?
> Unless you eat the thing

Normal batteries aren't good for you if you do that, either.

orenlindsey··on The curious case of the Raspberry Pi in the network closet (2019)
I always thought the load bearing Mac mini was a myth, it's such an impossible story and it's been so widely shared. I guess it's just a case of programmers taking the easiest route and having it backfire.
orenlindsey··on New GeForce RTX 4080 Super, RTX 4070 Ti Super, RTX 4070 Super
I thought it was weird that they would release new GPUs now, but I'm not complaining. The more GPUs the better.
orenlindsey··on Apple Vision Pro available in the U.S. on February 2
This product is the first step to the real future of tech. Just like the iPhone took years to catch on (similarly to Vision Pro, the big problem was price), this product's successors will be the market leaders for all tech in 5 years (maybe longer, but I think 5 years is fair).
orenlindsey··on Thorium – The first browser to score over 600 speedometer points on a Mac M3 Pro
This browser looks ok, but stuff like this turns me off from using it.

Single-developer projects are always risky. What if the dev just decides to stop developing it? Or there's a massive vulnerability, and they're on vacation with no internet?

orenlindsey··on BYD's YangWang U8 launched, can float on water for 30 minutes and sail 3km/h
You'll have to wait for more than 1 quarter before you make that call.
orenlindsey··on Show HN: I made a tool to compare time zones
Very well designed. I'd recommend saving the current state in the URL parameters, so you can share it (or save the link for yourself).

Also, open-sourcing it would be cool.

orenlindsey··on Live Map of Swiss Trains
The animations are nice.
orenlindsey··on Cleaning up my 200GB iCloud with some JavaScript
Interesting, also, Apple should make a mid-tier of iCloud. If they had a 500gb (or 400 or whatever) they could have gotten this guy to pay more.
orenlindsey··on A rocket a day keeps the high costs away (1993)
Elon Musk probably was inspired by this at some point.
orenlindsey··on 9 years of Apple text editor solo dev
SwiftUI is pretty good, I've been using to build an app. The big problem is navigation and state handling, it's not intuitive (although I never used AppKit or UIKit so I can't say if it's better or worse)
orenlindsey··on 'everything' blocks devs from removing their own NPM packages
The JS ecosystem is so goofy. Stuff like this, leftpad, and dozens more happen.

Doesn't happen to literally any other programming language (or maybe I just haven't paid attention to others)

orenlindsey··on There's Waldo is a robot that finds Waldo (2018) [video]
I know, it's actually funny how hard turning pages is for robots.
orenlindsey··on A simulation of me: fine-tuning an LLM on 240k text messages
I wanted to do this myself but I don't have enough messages yet. Also, I wish the author shared some more technical information on how to do it.
orenlindsey··on Power over fiber
Didn't know this was a thing. Pretty cool, but doesn't seem like it'd work over long distances.
orenlindsey··on Notes on the Ivory Coast
Really well written article.
orenlindsey··on Fixing annoying blue standby lights
You can't rely on colors to indicate status because someone might be colorblind. That's an often overlooked problem. You have to make the light do something special, like blink, if you really need it to indicate something important.
orenlindsey··on Fixing annoying blue standby lights
The MagSafe cable still has an LED in it, it's green when you're fully charged and orange when it's charging.

But I agree, Apple is good about not annoying you with LEDs.
