orenlindsey··on Don't use NameCheap for the .fr TLD
Google domains was the best registrar while it lasted. Sad that Google killed it.
orenlindsey··on Apple Vision Pro review
Anyone remember when Memoji came out? It was pretty mid. Lots of problems with it. Now it's really good. It works really well now. Personas are like that. Same thing with eye tracking.

This whole product is 90% of the way there. But the next 9% is just as hard as that original 90%. Apple is releasing it now to push it to 99%. It'll get better.

orenlindsey··on .ai website registrations are a windfall for tiny Anguilla
I wish TLDs were decentralized so that goofy stuff like this would never happen. It (having companies and entities own and control TLDs) never should have happened in the first place.
orenlindsey··on When I got started I debugged using printf() today I debug with print()
Logging is just easier. The lazy route is the most common
orenlindsey··on Tractor cab looks like a space ship (2021) [video]
People who just inherit a farm and get other people to run it aren't farmers.
orenlindsey··on Apple Vision Pro review
You can put VisionOS apps next to the Mac desktop, so it isn't as much of a problem as it seems.
orenlindsey··on Tractor cab looks like a space ship (2021) [video]
Farmers are truly geniuses. They have to be a combination of agriculturalist, meteorologist, engineer, mechanic, handyman, builder, vet, hydrologist, and now we're adding technologist to that. They also generally have an amazing work ethic (getting up before sunrise, working in the blazing heat all day, etc). Not to mention dealing with disasters like diseases, weather events, accidents (lots of sharp blades, tools, etc).

Massive respect for them. Even with this tractor, this guy likely does more work than the majority of people. They feed our entire society with a ton of work for very little reward. We don't give them the respect they're due.

orenlindsey··on The first human received an implant from Neuralink yesterday
Think about it though, the ability to control a computer from your brain would be incredible. It's what UI development is constantly pushing towards - to be as close as possible to mind reading. This would literally be mind reading.
orenlindsey··on The first human received an implant from Neuralink yesterday
This has the potential to change computing forever. If it actually works, Neuralink could be the pioneer of a completely new computing method.
orenlindsey··on Show HN: Pong Wars
Only a single HTML file. All you need.
orenlindsey··on Rook to XSS: How I hacked chess.com with a rookie exploit
They seriously tried to parse HTML with regex? That's crazy.
orenlindsey··on Rook to XSS: How I hacked chess.com with a rookie exploit
Very cool. I love seeing bug bounty write-ups, especially XSS. They always seem so easy to find (but that's just confirmation bias, I don't get to see the hours of testing and rabbit trails that go nowhere).
orenlindsey··on Too many Mac apps are being built with Electron
This is so true. Electron is bloated and it's only used because it's easier. Same with React Native. We have got to stop putting DX over UX.

"WhatsApp Helper, WhatsApp Helper, WhatsApp Helper (GPU), WhatsApp Helper (Renderer) and WhatsApp Helper (Renderer). A Mac app shouldn't need any of these. They’re probably communicating with each other using sockets or ports, or maybe shared files. This really isn’t how you’re supposed to build a Mac app. This shouldn’t become normalized."

orenlindsey··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
What if someone malicious makes a bot to install an app on a ton of accounts? The dev would get charged for every single install.
orenlindsey··on Why Is the Web So Monotonous? Google (2022)
They could create a positive loop if they wanted to.
orenlindsey··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
Apple loves to do the bare minimum to meet the regulations. I'm sure they hated having to do this.

But, this is still better than not doing it at all.

orenlindsey··on Why Is the Web So Monotonous? Google (2022)
Google is so annoying for doing this. They could have curated a better web, but they've consistently done what puts their profits first. Similar things have happened in other companies, and it always leads to their downfall (Kodak, GM, Polaroid, Blockbuster, etc).
orenlindsey··on Heat exchanger masks for cold weather cycling (2019)
I love this site! Wish I had found it sooner
orenlindsey··on Tour of new custom M1 macOS runners racks with Christina Warren [video]
Apple just needs to make it easier to install Linux on these machines. Or, make their own server software that's "good enough". Like OS X server but actually good.

But I doubt they would do this well. It would be way, way too expensive and probably not have upgradeable RAM.

orenlindsey··on What's that touchscreen in my room?
> There were two strings printed with labels “SSID” and “Pwd”. I froze in horror. They wouldn’t dare. It is literally 3 meter distance. These are embedded devices, they do not need this complexity…

> Socket.IO! Wow, I honestly did not expect that. Client literally needs to receive 5 numbers from the server, Socket.IO seems to be a complete overkill for this usecase.

> The client code also looks very complicated for what it does. There are at least 6 RequireJS modules, all loading dynamically through different requests of course. There is Handlebars, Backbone.js, Underscore.js

I just kept getting more incredulous throughout this article. No way someone would put in that much effort for a device like this. The laziest option is usually the most common in software development. I guess in this case, it's not.

orenlindsey··on Shots: Create Mockups
In the past 7 years, Apple has doubled down on improving WebKit. I think if you tried it now, you'd find Safari is basically the same as Firefox.
orenlindsey··on Shots: Create Mockups
"Safari is not supported yet"

Is Safari really that hard to develop for? Name one feature this site needs that won't run in safari. WebKit has been getting a lot better recently, I feel like not supporting Safari at this point is because of one of three things: you're too lazy to try it, don't have a Mac, or you are stuck to the opinion that Safari is somehow behind Chrome or Firefox in major ways.

I use safari daily and *never* have a problem with a site not working. Ever. So I doubt there's some new web api that this site needs that doesn't work on Safari.

orenlindsey··on German developer guilty of 'hacking' for exposing hardcoded credentials in app
This is like giving someone a book you wrote to proofread, with your password unintentionally in the text. They use it to login and then tell you about it. Sure, they shouldn't have logged in, but it doesn't feel like it deserves criminal charges.
orenlindsey··on Universities accommodate food delivery robots
What if someone actually wants to deliver food? Maybe you like driving, you like being alone in your car and listening to music or podcasts, shuttling food orders around the town. Maybe it's fun for you.
orenlindsey··on John Lasseter drew the BSD daemon logo
Here's the book with the John Lassetter cover if anyone wants it: https://www.amazon.com/Design-Implementation-UNIX-Operating-...

There's a "Used - Good" quality one for $4.

orenlindsey··on Universities accommodate food delivery robots
Seems like a solution looking for a problem. We don't need food delivery robots, people are happy to do the same thing (just look at Uber eats, DoorDash, postmates, etc). And since the robots already charge you a delivery fee, you may as well pay that money to an actual person rather than a company.
orenlindsey··on Hacking into an insurance company by exploiting their premium calculator
So crazy that things like this still happen in production. I mean, maybe I have survivorship bias (we never hear about the companies that don't have security flaws, or the hundreds of APIs that are completely secure), but it should be super easy to make a site that is secure. Even I know how to do it. It shouldn't be that hard to find people who know how to make secure sites.
orenlindsey··on Spotted water hemlock: the most toxic plant in North America (2017)
People didn't always do certain things (like committing suicide) the easy way, they often did them in the most dramatic way possible. This was generally true up until around the Industrial Revolution.
orenlindsey··on "Paste this post into ChatGPT 4"
Can someone copy the text and post it here? I can't see the post.
orenlindsey··on Emails I Received, the Collection
It's so funny to read these emails, but I would put some kind of disclaimer in the license about how to get actual help if you're being hacked, or something like that.
