opwieurposiu··on The first room-temperature ambient-pressure superconductor?
You can improve the current density a lot if you can make a single crystal, or at least make your crystal grains larger.

Impure superconductor samples often come out as a spongy mixture of superconducting and non-superconducting bits, the critical current is limited because less then 25% of the cross section is actually carrying current. When I was DIYing YBCO this is what happened most of the time. Every now and then you would get a good one.

See this patent for growing single crystals of YBCO. https://patents.google.com/patent/US6046139A/en

edit: Actually if you look at the sample picture in the paper on page 7, it looks like spongy crap. Nobel prize winning spongy crap, but still. I would expect the numbers to improve as better crystal growing methods are found.

opwieurposiu··on Why Men Get So Few Matches on Dating Apps [video]
I solved this problem with one year of lifting weights and dancing lessons. About 2hr/day 6day/week time commitment. It is not quick or easy, but it is simple and very effective.

When you have muscle, girls on the bus will come sit next to you and chat you up. They forgive you if you speak inelegantly. When you can dance your body language and posture will make people feel at ease. It was a strange experience for me as a nerd. Apps are a waste of time.

The thing that struck me from this book (or maybe it was in "Dark Sun") was how much the soviets were spying. We were giving them detailed plans for chemical factories, tire factories, engines, alloys, anything you can think of. They did not trust us so they would spy on all this stuff anyway. They would fill up a C-47 Skytrains(lend-lease) with stolen documents and fly them out to Moscow through Alaska.

I have to give the soviets the win on this one. Their spying was very effective. All that spying let them get the bomb PDQ.

opwieurposiu··on Cities are ending fares on transit. Here’s why
My town built a north-south buss that has it's own street for most of the route. It ran every 10 min and was pretty useful and popular. During covid they quit charging fare and also changed to 20min frequency.

Now you may have to wait 40 min for a round trip depending on when you get to the station. This makes it hard to use the bus for a lunch errand where you need to be back in an hour.
I think the fare + high frequency system worked better.

Most panels will handle up to ping-pong size no problem. Solar front-sheet glass has been pretty highly optimized over the years.

In the case you do get damage, the actual panels are only about 1/4 of the total system cost. So the panels are pretty cheap to replace, assuming you picked a common size.

Medium value stuff is shredded into a big pile and then they leach the gold off it with cyanide. It has a much higher concentration of gold then raw gold ore.

Low value stuff is shipped to poor countries where the copper is extracted by burning and picking through the ash. Very toxic process.

I think the whole "true threats" concept is backwards. It is false threats that should be prohibited.

Lets say there is some guy at the park who really loves a particular dandelion. If you step on this dandelion this guy will stab you. I would much rather the guy announce this ahead of time, rather then just silently knife me in the kidney. If I know about the threat I can take steps to avoid it.

True threats are valuable information to have.

On the average, one square meter in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone contains around 15 kilograms of manganese nodules.

The CCZ is south east of Hawaii. 9 million square kilometers, approximately the size of Europe, this is the world‘s largest manganese nodule region. The total mass of manganese nodules there is around 21 billion tones.

Just the copper alone in those nodules is worth 1,800 billion dollars.

GPT-4 does better on this question. Bard ignores that Queequeg is a cannibal and that Ishmael gets on the boat because he is depressed. GPT-4 gives a graduate level answer and bard gives a high-school level answer.

Who are the main characters in Moby Dick?

GPT-4:

"Moby-Dick; or, The Whale" is a novel by American writer Herman Melville, published in 1851. The main characters in the story are:

Ishmael: The novel's narrator and protagonist. Ishmael is a sailor who decides to embark on a whaling voyage to overcome his depression. He provides philosophical and historical context throughout the story, often commenting on the nature of humanity and the whaling industry.

Captain Ahab: The enigmatic, obsessed, and monomaniacal captain of the whaling ship Pequod. Ahab is on a quest for revenge against Moby Dick, a massive white sperm whale that bit off his leg during a previous encounter. His determination and single-minded pursuit of the whale drive the plot and ultimately lead to the destruction of the ship and its crew.

Queequeg: A skilled harpooner from the South Pacific island of Rokovoko and Ishmael's close friend. Queequeg is a noble, tattooed cannibal who impresses the crew with his prowess as a harpooner and his quiet dignity. His friendship with Ishmael serves as a symbol of cross-cultural understanding and brotherhood.

Starbuck: The Pequod's first mate, a devout Quaker from Nantucket. Starbuck is a skilled and experienced whaleman, but he disapproves of Ahab's vengeful quest. He often serves as a voice of reason, questioning Ahab's motives and decisions throughout the story.

Moby Dick: The titular character, Moby Dick is an enormous white sperm whale that has become legendary among whalers for its size, strength, and apparent intelligence. Ahab's pursuit of Moby Dick serves as the central conflict of the novel.

There are several other important characters in the novel, including other crew members of the Pequod (such as Stubb, Flask, and Pip) and various figures from the whaling industry. These characters contribute to the rich tapestry of the story, as Melville explores themes of obsession, fate, and the human struggle against nature.

Bard:

The main characters in Moby-Dick are:

Ishmael: The narrator of the story, Ishmael is a young man who signs on to the Pequod as a crew member. He is a keen observer and a thoughtful narrator, and his voice is one of the most important elements of the novel.

Captain Ahab: The captain of the Pequod, Ahab is a complex and enigmatic figure. He is driven by a desire for revenge against Moby Dick, the white whale that took his leg. Ahab is a charismatic leader, but he is also a deeply flawed man.

Moby Dick: The white whale that Ahab is obsessed with, Moby Dick is a symbol of evil, power, and the unknown. He is a creature of immense strength and intelligence, and he poses a great threat to Ahab and his crew.

Queequeg: A harpooneer from the South Pacific, Queequeg is Ishmael's first and best friend on the Pequod. He is a large, tattooed man with a fierce exterior, but he is also a kind and generous soul.

Starbuck: The first mate of the Pequod, Starbuck is a level-headed and experienced sailor. He is a voice of reason on the ship, and he tries to dissuade Ahab from his quest for revenge.

Stubb: The second mate of the Pequod, Stubb is a jovial and carefree man. He is a skilled whaler, but he is also a bit of a gambler and a womanizer. Flask: The third mate of the Pequod, Flask is a quiet and unassuming man. He is a loyal crew member, but he is not as skilled as Stubb or Starbuck.

These are just a few of the main characters in Moby-Dick. The novel is full of complex and well-developed characters, each of whom plays an important role in the story.

I got a NanoVNA for about $60 and it works way better then I had any right to expect. If you have any need to figure out some kind of RF issue it is well worth the money for the amount of time you will save.

I used it to diagnose a VHF issue on a boat. The AIS was reporting high VSWR but only sometimes... It turned out that the antenna was seriously affected by it's angle relative to the metal poles that support the Bimini top.

Also, a lossy cable is not always a bad thing. A lossy cable can stabilize a PA if you are forced to have bad match at the load end.
