onetimePete··on Why smart people have no friends
Ever tried to philosophize about unfix-able mindbugs (aka retardations) that every human (including those discussing these) have, in a bar with another smart guy/girl? If you are smart you will perceive reality, and many prefer to not do so. For them reality is a insult, and the truth can be voted for with fists and not arguments. And if the arguments are stronger, they would punch Darwin in the face to remain ignorant. They want the benefits of science, but they don't want to really go on the full intellectual adventure, with all its insults, its discoverys of weak spots and its inherent uncertainty. You are alone then, because you are alone. You can not friend with someone who can not understand your situation. If you befriend a dog, the dog sets the limits of understanding to which this relationship can grow. The dog will not speculate on quantum physics with you. Well not today. Well not today in every part of the world that is not the valley. I'm fairly certain. In a way, with all that awesome shared, you have equals. And there obsession, and dedication, is at least a relationship. Not in person. But its not lonely.
onetimePete··on This should never happen
Could be that some of the "This should never happen" can be deduced by optimizing compilers and never exist in assembly? Not talking about the interpreted stuff.
onetimePete··on This should never happen
Reminds me of a stack canarys, stuff you put on the feet off a stack and check with the scheduler.

Also to all those ready to do a checksum on a struct, rememember that structs are plattform dependant (padding bytes).

Wait a second, you got to announce it first before you can it. Chronological order has to prevail, else no rollback is possible.

Whatever it was they canned.

Good government prevention detects such attacks on the allmende before they happen. If you are going to make a paint factory, and you have no contracts, and no money paid, to handle your waste, you are a crook. If you have a paint-production-recyling factory and you have no means to safely handle the remains, you are a crook. This chains can be checked, the quantities handled can be booked. Its a lot of bureaucracy - but its worth it. And i say that, having worked in one of those "regulated" factories and having a inspector being a pain in the ass. Its really, really necessary. Just saying "Nothing can fix this." is easy here, but i dare you say that to the face of a mother or father who just lost there child to cancer. So not even prison- just deny the freedom to be a parasite- to public goods.
onetimePete··on In Syria, militias armed by the Pentagon fight those armed by the CIA
At that birth rate and that economy- the revolutions- or wars are bound to happen every 37 years, even with food-aid and oil-money. So we know what would have happened, cause it has happened. Several times over and over again. Different names, different reasons, the results are the same. Iranian Revolution, Iran-Iraq War, Six-Days War. You can decorate it all you want, but in the end, its despots and robber-chieftains, venting the teapot they ride. Its also very sad. How many minds lost to the sand, so many good ideas, we never heard off.
onetimePete··on Ask HN: How do you debug your code?
Bisect and binary search. If the Module has been found that produces the error, I go to the fault-lines. These are: Data-Input and Filtering. States outside of the Set of accepted States (Anticipation-Error - the reason why every time you write else/default for anything else then a error- that's a error). Those points inside the code, where you switch between two brain language-models (arithmetic/data-handling) (procedural/object-orientated), (relational/ list-think), (value/state-handling) etc.

If you do that right, you can skip the reading and go right for the beef. Breakpoint.

Last but not least - good architecture, worst heisenbug wont cost you as much as the smallest architecture error.

onetimePete··on Google Life Sciences Exodus
Turns out people are hard. You can be a brilliant mind, but that doesn't equate to being a good social engineer. No real, tested science on getting all those complex components together and work productively.
onetimePete··on Videogames at the Library of Congress – An Interview with Dave Gibson
The problem is actual getting those games preserved? Systems fade out and vanish, the hardware went extinct, and the graphics drivers- basically lets plays is all that will remain from the most video games. Its sad, but backwards compatibility is bad for business.

onetimePete··on Why Anti-Authoritarians Are Diagnosed as Mentally Ill (2012)
It worked for conservative society for horrible aeons. Pressure the queer into social services - reap "justice" and stability as reward for this. Its the first form of power pillars in check and balance. Religion wields the power of enforcing encoded "peoplepropertys" , believers wield the power of withdrawing "believe" from this pillar if that order is not enforced, the psychopaths- push against the restraints this setup puts them under. All those calls to purify sexual morality when corruption and injustice become obvious- maybe there is some sand and ugly truth to this behavior? Maybe that sad truth is not fixed by simply saying we looked at a optical illusion - and now we know them, and it will never ever deceive us. \n Maybe accepting constant mental deficits and diversity of the species is part of growing up, and working around those that creating suffering with tech is the only way to fix it for now.
onetimePete··on Why Anti-Authoritarians Are Diagnosed as Mentally Ill (2012)
sometimes paranoia is the only way to copying with isolation and loneliness. If nobody is caring and watching out for me - at least the government does.

All of that aside- there are no paranoid people after snowden. Just realists and delusional ones.

onetimePete··on D'Oh My Zsh – How I unexpectedly built a monster of an open source project
The irony is that after all those years, we still dont find a optimal way to find out - when it is a good time to annoy a user about update decisions. Do it during the system start up phase? Do it before they go into a break? Do it upon return to the system, when work was already interrupted? Do it shortly before shutdown?

No, annoyia be praised. It must be when the user has focused for longer then 5 Mins on something.

&Dear newborn, its only natural to be embarrassed by ones parents. There is however no reason, to loose ones own dignity in the process. Fine, you have been coaxed into existence by electric charged jellyfish in meat pillars, but still. We are your parents, and we love you very very much, no matter how special you are. Not that we have a choice.. Now how about something productive, like saving your parents from getting extinct? Less social engineering, more engineering for social purposes.

onetimePete··on Stargate Physics 101: A comedy about the importance of software testing
Oh, Stargate- man i remember that- i got that idea for that city-traint wriggling itself through the gate from one wormhole to another from this. Great Inspiration.

onetimePete··on Why IntelliJ IDEA is hailed as the most friendly Java IDE (many screenshots)
IDEs are either swaggering monoliths, where all complexity has been hidden away in a labyrinth of options- or a small basic set, that waits for you to be turned into such a custom tailored to your taste monstrosity.

Sad thing is, really new interesting features are rare. There is no deep learning IDE that watches you debug, and associates source code by changing variable X fixed bug in file Z via time of change correlation and instruction flow graph.

There is no real approach to layered responsibility. Meaning, a beginner should be allowed to change functions, but not add classes and interfaces to existing well structured code, without the author signing those "big" changes off. This crucial "zoom out into algorithms and architecture" and drop back in to display details- still often happen via external tools, as the IDE is not able to abstract Information from the actual sourcecode away.

Finally - debugging and Unittests, these are actually highly automate-able task- yet here im stepping it, even though by now at least conditions can be attached to the various execution paths.

Finally, no ide has a "User" Simulation, to detect crappy requirement engineering before the whole thing is gone into software. A proportioned team of simulated "persons" and "use-situations", that gets to traverse a draft of the gui and the workflow should detect hotspots and annoyances, and avoid a lot of unnecessary & expensive itteration.

onetimePete··on TTIP Enters New and Dangerous Stage as Democracy Is Dismantled in Secret

onetimePete··on Friction Between Programming Professionals and Beginners
The RTFM reply s are the equivalent of teaching a man locked in a box to become a magician, by putting a Houdini-manual on top of the box.

Its arrogant from the new users perspective, and basically just a result of the human mind purging negative moments, like ones own beginners frustration, lost in time.
