olssy··on Solid aims to radically change the way web applications work
No idea why the website offers so little information but here is the project: https://github.com/solid/
olssy··on New Zealand Study Provides More Support for Lead-Crime Hypothesis
I actually appreciated the article offering another conclusion as the author did clearly indicate the originals papers conclusion. This isn't the first time papers using data from this study(https://dunedinstudy.otago.ac.nz/) has lead(excuse my pun) to controversial conclusions.
olssy··on Notepad++ V 7.3.3 – Fix CIA Hacking Notepad++ Issue
That's my bet also.
olssy··on Many McGill Education Students Cannot Calculate an Average
It is worth noting that McGill has over 60% of students coming from outside of Quebec so this doesn't have much to do with Quebec's education system. http://www.mcgill.ca/about/quickfacts/students
olssy··on Google Is Developing Its Own Uber Competitor
Google was hacked by the NSA years ago according to the Snowden leaks: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-24751821
olssy··on LSD: The Geek's Wonder Drug? (2006)
I first heard a variant of this story about 30 years ago, either a lot of kids killed themselves jumping out of windows on acid or it's an urban legend.
olssy··on Google discloses three severe vulnerabilities in Apple OS X
From what I can tell one of the exploits allows for code execution with root privileges, another for accessing kernel-space memory and the third will crash the machine. Are any of these things not already doable when someone has physical access to the machine?
olssy··on Elon Musk donates $10M to keep AI beneficial
If only humans could agree on what makes things beneficial to themselves. Are self-driving cars and rockets to Mars beneficial to humanity? Depending on how you look at it the answer is both yes and no.
olssy··on DigitalOcean now supports FreeBSD
It shouldn't be a struggle at all just be conscious that freeBSD does not try and protect the user from him/her self. Case in point, "kill 1" won't do anything on linux but in freeBSD it will kill the init process.
olssy··on We have broken HTTP
HTTP is too flexible not to theoretically break but in practice it can be used and abused and still deliver.
olssy··on New Search Strategy for Firefox
As long as the horse is in the house, has Mozilla ever given any thought to creating its own search service?
olssy··on Kevin Mitnick Now Selling Zero-Day Exploits
At least this way large corporations will start paying more for their bounties.
olssy··on How a German Soda Became Hackers' Fuel of Choice
You can order it in North America from the 2600 store: http://store.2600.com/clubmate.html

Funny there was no mention in the article that they are the eastern distributor what with them being a hacker organization with deep ties to the CCC.

olssy··on Everything that is wrong with American capitalism, in one headline
A lot more than that is wrong with capitalism like the fact that no value is given to anything you can't sell.
olssy··on Ask HN: Canadian VPS hosting?
This company was a client where I used to work and seemed very knowledgable and friendly: http://www.cartika.com Not really the same as DigitalOcean but they offer VPS hosting with data centers in Canada(and US) and they are based in Toronto(or where 2 years ago, they grew quite big since then)
olssy··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
A monitor that outputs wavelengths of light that are therapeutic. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_therapy

Been thinking about this since Asus came out with a laptop with an air ionizer in 2008.

olssy··on Using Vim as a writing environment
I use :Ex(plore) It's not great but it gets the job done.
olssy··on Why isn’t New Zealand richer and more productive?
It might be because when you live in paradise money does not have the same value and productivity does not limited to renumerated work.
olssy··on Dispelling the hate against PHP
There's something to hate in all programming languages but hate can almost be seen as a popularity metric.
olssy··on Ask HN: Best VPNs around?
If you are expecting faster speeds you will likely be disappointed, you're still going through the network you're on.
olssy··on Ask HN: Why do open source projects attract more coders than designers?
Designers like sexy, developers like geeky, that's always been my reasoning behind it. It's a shame too because end users don't seem very interested to use a product if there isn't a sexy interface. I also think the money has to do with it, I can work for 3 months a year and have enough to live on, I'm not sure most designers can pull in money like that, can they?
olssy··on Ask HN: Possible to know everything in a computer system, like in old days?
Nope, but it sure is fun trying!
olssy··on Teen to government: Change your typeface, save millions
The broken window fallacy only works if the funds being spent can and will be spent in a more productive way.
olssy··on Teen to government: Change your typeface, save millions
400 million saved is 400 million removed from the economy, isn't it?
olssy··on Three Mozilla Board Members Resign over Choice of New CEO
I think Eich was also on the board which would have made it 4-3. Not sure though.
olssy··on Tesla Adds Titanium Underbody Shield and Aluminum Deflector Plates to Model S
Did anyone else notice a screw coming detached from the titanium underbody shield after the impact of the three ball tow hitch, you can also see the shield bend on the impact of the concrete block and the hole where the screw was. It would be kind of ironic if this actually made the car less safe.
olssy··on I am sick of the media saying "Hacker" when they mean "Black Hat"
Whatever kind of hacker you are there's a great convention for us all this summer in NYC, Hackers On Planet Earth: hope.net
olssy··on Unicode support in MySQL is...
I think it's actually CESU-8 encoding: http://www.unicode.org/reports/tr26/

I'm guessing it's implemented like this for performance reasons and calling it utf-8 was just a marketing ploy as everyone knows we should always use utf-8 for everything...

olssy··on VAXen, my children, just don't...
Cool story but I read the date was added afterwards and was removed from wikipedia in 2005 when this was realized: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk%3ABlack_Monday_(1987)#Link...
