ollybee··on The Dark Side of Notepad++: V8
I literally just downloaded and ran Notepad++ on my Linux desktop with no issues.
ollybee··on Virtual deck of cards using just a browser
Does anyone know anything about the tech or infrastructure behind this site?
ollybee··on Ads are impersonating government websites in Google results, despite ban
This does not seem be a problem in the UK, searches topics that might be prone to this all seem to give the correct .gov.uk site as the first result with no ads that could be described as misleading. I wonder if the UK government, advertising standards agencies and trading standards authorities have put more pressure on google? Or perhaps the legal landscape here makes it untenable to operate such a scam business.
ollybee··on Nominet chooses civil war over compromise by rejecting ex-BBC Trust chairman
Here is the letter that's referenced in the article https://publicbenefit.uk/resources/Binns-12-April-2021.pdf
ollybee··on Bitwarden Send - A trusted way to securely share information with anyone
There are number of open source projects that do the same thing such as https://privatebin.info Adding some marketing on top seems like a good thing as pasting passwords in chat happens too often in many organisations.
ollybee··on No support Linux hosting shutting down from hack
You have my attention, what is this recent sudo bug?
ollybee··on No support Linux hosting shutting down from hack
I never understood why their no support hosting seemed radical, but unmanaged VPS's became an industry standard.
ollybee··on Ask HN: Which software do you guys use for managing devices in rack
+1 Netbox

The Netbox Ansible inventory is mature, and you can use the netbox webhook feature to trigger Ansible playbooks. It's extremely powerful and is the root of almost all of my admin tasks now..

The governance ansible is excellent, the attention to detail coming from user feedback and pull requests really show when you dig into it.

ollybee··on Mondragon Corporation
equal pay for all 200+ workers, not only between genders.
ollybee··on Mondragon Corporation
In the UK there is Suma wholefoods being notable for being the largest equal pay cooperative in Europe with a turn over of £40 million. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suma_(co-operative)
ollybee··on How cloud computing impacts the environment
I tried to share this link with someone on Facebook Messenger and it said it could not be shared due to violating their community standards. Only thing I can guess is it's something to do with the .christmas tld

ollybee··on Live video from a fishing boat in New Zealand
This article gives some context https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/sep/12/ship-of-horror...
ollybee··on Cluster SSH – Manage Multiple Linux Servers Simultaneously
You can with the expect module, although I admit it's no fun.
ollybee··on DigitalOcean block storage is down
I work for a hosting company and this is totally normal. Digital Ocean and other VPS providers IP ranges are specifically targeted as many amateurs running servers there.

If you've disabled password logins then just don't worry about it. fail2ban is overkill you can rate limit with firewalld or iptables withou needing extra tools.

ollybee··on Boris Johnson uses search terms in interviews to hide negative articles?
Not the first time he has been accused of this https://twitter.com/beffernieblack/status/114380892107484364...
ollybee··on Bioreactor Captures as Much Carbon as an Acre of Trees
These kinds of ideas just don't seem to make sense given the scale of the problem. It's as if some people imagine you could set up a few plants of for each power station and we'd be all square. When in fact: https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/life-unbounded/the-craz...
ollybee··on The Gravitational-Wave “Revolution” Is Underway
I recommend watching videos by Rana Adhikari if you want to know about gravitational waves. I went down a rabbit hole about a year ago with his video's, he is increasingly engaging. Also even in a short time his predictions for the field are coming to pass.
ollybee··on Bugs That Became Features
They should add Nuclear Gandhi from the Civilization games as one of the most amusing examples of this.
ollybee··on Sites with dumb password rules
Strange to see a .gov.uk site on there ( https://github.com/dumb-password-rules/dumb-password-rules#h... ) as they have excellent guidance on this https://design-system.service.gov.uk/patterns/passwords/
ollybee··on Show HN: Cloud Maker – Rapidly create cloud architecture diagrams
This Seems similar to https://www.happi.io
ollybee··on Toshi: An Elasticsearch competitor written in Rust
You can send logs to influx no problem. telegraf (The collecting agent from the Influx team) has a logparser input plugin which can parse logs via patterns, it understands Apache logs by default. The catch is that there is no full text search. It's still useful as you can quickly find logs to view by searching fields that have been parsed.
ollybee··on Building a better gov.uk, step by step
They recently published a style guide and it is excellent https://beta.nhs.uk/service-manual/
ollybee··on Shell Magic: Set Operations with uniq
I've always used grep for this with the -f option to read a list of patterns from a file and -v for inverted search as necessary.
ollybee··on MacOS command line version of the WireGuard VPN is now available for testing
A benefit unmentioned in this article is full IP roaming on both ends. That is good on its own but combined with the Android support has some very interesting possibilities.
ollybee··on Finding the longest straight line you could sail without hitting land
That final question struck me as odd, the next question for my mind was could the technique be generalised to a map on a torus?
ollybee··on Since 2016, Half of All Coral in the Great Barrier Reef Has Died
I reccomend this BBC radio program for an up to date discussion on the state of the Great Barrier Reef http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09snj90
ollybee··on India's farmed chickens dosed with world's strongest antibiotics, study finds
From https://aphascience.blog.gov.uk/2016/11/18/colistin-an-antib...

"Colistin is considered a drug of last resort in human medicine" but also "It has been used in Europe for decades to treat intestinal infections in farm animals, although in the UK, it has only more recently been used to treat infections in animals"

The Guardian article paints a picture of developing countries irresposibly using colistin for animals, but I dont think that is the full story here.

ollybee··on Shotcut: Free, open source, cross-platform video editor
Does anyone know how this compares to Openshot? Which is also cross platform and open source.
ollybee··on In Search of Mary Shelley review: A life of monsters and men
This has been BBC radio 4's book of the week and as such has been serialised in 5 15 minute parts which will be available on iplayer to UK residents for the next month. I've certainly enjoyed it. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09ms55g
