ollybee··on The Cloud Computer
Existing vendors will provide rack integration services and deliver a turn key solution like this. Also vendors of virtualization management software have partnerships with hardware suppliers and be happy to deliver fully integrated solutions if you're buying by the rack. The difference is in those cases you have flexibility in the design which seems to be missing here.

Proxmox and a full rack of Supermicro gear would not be as sophisticated, but end result is pretty much the same, with I imagine far far better bang for buck.

I like it, but it doesn't seem like a big deal or revolutionary in any way.

ollybee··on Show HN: Lost Pixel Platform – visual regression testing for your front end
The "getting started" directs me to give permissions for Lost Pixel to "act on my behalf" on my github account. I don't feel comfortable with that.
ollybee··on Manticore 6.0.0 – a faster alternative to Elasticsearch in C++
Give Xapian a go also.

ollybee··on The death of Rackspace’s ‘fanatical support’
It's not changed that much, it's just thata new infrastructure as a service industry has grown up.

If you went to any of the infrastructure companies you have listed and said that you had a few Wordpress sites that needed hosting but needed someone to help you get them migrate them over and make sure everything was set up properly, then they would not be able to help. With most of them you wouldn't even get through on the phone. There's still plenty of hosting companies about who will do that as part of the service with no problem.

ollybee··on Meditations on an inexpensive laundry basket
I have a laundry basket I took form my parents, I think it's from at least the 70's, it seems to be made of a thicker plastic, that's a little rubbery and so does not crack. I've newer washing baskets the plastic seems more brittle and has cracked over time. I wondered if the 70's basket had some additive that is no longer allowed, or that the economics if making a quality product dont make sense, I've certainly no been able to find and that seem robust like my 70's one in the UK.
ollybee··on Garage: An open-source distributed object storage service
It looks similar to minio, which as also an AGPL single binary that implements the S3 API. However Minio is written in Go and Garage is in Rust. I'd love to see a detailed comparison.
ollybee··on Keyboard shortcuts for GNU Readline
Readline also has the kinkiest sounding line out of any man page: (M-y) Rotate the kill ring, and yank the new top.

Always makes me giggle.

ollybee··on Is Truss Still PM?
Site could be improves with an RSS feed
ollybee··on Webalizer Demo (1999)
Webalizer is still shipped by default with cPanel, which although maybe not popular here is still by far the most commonly used hosting control panel. There are surprisingly few tools for quick log file analysis, goaccess already mentioned being a notable exception.

ollybee··on Ask HN: Do you expect cloud price increase in Europe due to enery crisis
Yes. In the UK it's been delayed as the government announced help for businesses, but with no details other than it would be "equivalent support" than for consumers. Other events in the UK have forced those crucial details to the back seat for now. As soon as details are known the price rises will come.
ollybee··on Making a Website Under 1kB
One of the linked examples zenofpython.org reliably crashes chrome on my phone, although not when rehosting same content on my own server. Can anyone reproduce that?
ollybee··on Blockchains by number of nodes/validators

ollybee··on A Re-Purposed Tactical Decision Game

ollybee··on How Mondragon Became the World's Largest Co-Op
Take a look at Suma in the UK - a large coop with £50 million turn over. Not everyone does the same job, but everyone gets the same pay, much more like an idealized co-op.
ollybee··on The NetHack Challenge: Dungeons, Dragons, and Tourists (2021)
Where can you see "training rules that prohibit AI's from similarly being spoiled"? It says "We imposed no limits upon how teams would design or train (if relevant) their agents" so seems they do allow spoiled AI.

Even spoiled, when it's achieved, an ability to complete a task like ascending in NetHack seems more world changing to me than the LaMDA conversations.

ollybee··on Happy Birthday, Libera Chat
We are all in a slow death. Right now it and we are alive with a vibrant IRC community to be thankful for.
ollybee··on Costs of California’s troubled bullet train rise again, by estimated $5B
Large infrastructure projects like this are paying it forward. They are a gift to future generations who will reap the benefit without having to pay for it, just as we have benefited from inherited infrastructure of our cities.
ollybee··on H.264 is Magic (2016)
There was once a blog titled "Diary Of An x264 Developer" that gave some interesting detail of how h264 worked and the and the x264 implementation. It's still available on via the internet archive.

ollybee··on Starlink adds another 100Gbps connection to the SeattleIX
I may have missed your meaning, but to be clear, LINX is not for profit and DE-CIX is wholly owned by a not for profit association.
ollybee··on Starlink adds another 100Gbps connection to the SeattleIX
It is the norm in Europe for IXPs to be run by non-profits. See this for more info http://drpeering.net/HTML_IPP/chapters/ch12-9-US-vs-European...
ollybee··on Terminal support for emoji
On my terminal I can delete family members. With the family emoji from the article of each back space removes a child, three key presses are needed to remove all 3 people in the emoji. It makes sense but very funny to see.
ollybee··on Gov.uk Platform as a Service
It is hosted on AWS, from the features page: "The platform is hosted on Amazon Web Services in the UK, "
ollybee··on Every pricing page should have GIFs
Also in documentation, I always loved the Grafana documentation for being sprinkled with short gifs to demonstrate different features.
ollybee··on PeerTube 4 RC
Yes, I have a browser plugin to open youtube links in mpv, but it's been unusable recently with constant buffering. I dont even fetch them at best quality.

ollybee··on The Dark Side of Notepad++: V8
