oliveoil··on X-COM
Was I the only one to ever hit that bug where on some missions you randomly found so much Elerium-115 so that you no longer had to worry about depleting it as a resource? That made the game suddenly lot easier to finish.

Also, disagree that the "Terror from the Deep" was poor. It was more of the good stuff and much much harder.

oliveoil··on Berners-Lee: WWW is spy net
am I naive to think we all would get spied on a lot less if we cleared our browser cookies every couple of hours or at least daily?
oliveoil··on Danish government builds Minecraft world of Denmark from geodata
building whole cities and landscapes by putting together small bricks piece by piece? would be surprised if they were not all over it in DK, the land of lego.
oliveoil··on F1 2014: All aboard the 'power train' - new rules explained
Same here, stopped watching around 1998. I though it's mostly about the car (which is largely random per-season, yes) and instead of celebrating the design/engineering behind the only things celebrated around f1 are the personalities of drivers, their excesses and their egos.
oliveoil··on Facebook's legal team bans developer of F.B. Purity from Facebook
I think Facebook is not after FB Purity. They are after anyone who could come up with a plugin that scrapes the content and stores it to a db. People using the plugin would get access to the db in exchange: companies could look up prospective employees, ex-girlfriends spy on their defriended ex-boyfriends, etc.

Hell, the idea is so tempting that someone is definitely doing this already. And you'd only need a percentile of the users to get the information for every other facebook user.

can someone explain to me how you can make money on a game like Rochard (one of the games in the bundle)? There is such an incredible amount of detail in the background in each scene, it looks like few thousand hours of work just that.

Wouldn't it be enough to just move sites like this to for instance Russia?

oliveoil··on A Dirty Business: New York City’s top prosecutor takes on Wall Street crime
But I said 'better enough'. There are of course investors that can legally get above the index.
oliveoil··on A Dirty Business: New York City’s top prosecutor takes on Wall Street crime
One day, mathematicians will prove that any fund doing better enough than the index must be insider trading. All those people from the 90s and 2000s, long retired by then, will be convicted. It's like in cycling when they measure too much hemoglobin in the blood they conclude the guy's doping. The funds' financial records will be their frozen piss samples.

oliveoil··on The Mystery of the Tainted Cocaine
just a smuggling idea: why don't they build an unmanned sub to shuttle the drugs around the border? it could go much deeper (no air needed), move real slowly, stay submerged for a very long time at one place, navigate completely automatically using GPS (except someone needs to pick up the cargo on the other end) and if caught it's hard to catch the smugglers.

hmm.. a clever trick for non-chrome users to realize how slow the javascript in their browser is?
oliveoil··on Google Chrome Labs (Featuring Tabs on the Left)
hmm two things come to mind:

1) finally something that would make me switch for a 'wide-screen' lcd. 2) if you can resize the bar then all of the webdesigners' estimates about "this much should always fit the screen without scrolling" are off (if they still make them).

Couldnt agree more.

>I know people who would be much happier doing games >development subjects at uni but are reluctant because >future employers may not give them non games dev jobs

This is a good thing in my opinion, it could help regulate the talent flowing into the industry so the companies wake up and start making better environment for the engineers.

> Especially as a programmer, why would you put up with something so ridiculous? It's not that hard to find work doing development elsewhere.

I think this is partly because they feel specialized in what they are doing and their feeling of specialization sort of binds them to the game industry.

The other part being the glamour wisty is writing about.

oliveoil··on My [husband] works for Electronic Arts, I'm ... a disgruntled spouse. (2004)
there's something seriously fucked up with the game industry. A uni friend with a reasonably good theoretical CS degree tried to get a junior gameplay programming job last year and was told/signalled his knowledge and experience is not game-specific enough. So what I suspect is that the people who manage to get in have spent some sweet time getting there (perhaps even on specialized uni courses) and keep telling themselves this is what they really wanted (wasn't it just yesterday here on HN someone posted the wiki article about cognitive dissonance?). And it's the same across large portion of game companies at least, most notably those crunching out MMO games (there's a great blog about that that I can't find right now).

How about an added value in a well educated person. Like he or she feels better about themselves, is more likely to contribute to society with things as art (or open source software) as well as more likely to succeed starting a new business and bring in even more of that MONEY.

of course they responded somehow, that's the next best thing after not silently removing once published poll. we can hope their intentions are clear, but we know nearly for sure the poll was there, some voting happened and then it was removed (the 'nearly' being the possibility of the story all made up by androidforums.)
oliveoil··on [dead]
upvoting this.

I seriously couldn't care less about EVO 4G or iPhone. But I loath and fear manipulative media like nothing in the world.
