oliculipolicula··on OpenAI Withdraws 3 Math Papers
No. Someone received a tip, presumably from inside OAI. He then used OAI Astra to check..
oliculipolicula··on OpenAI Withdraws 3 Math Papers
Tweeter checked it with Astra. It seems like OAI could have pointed their own instance at it before launch. Because the source of the tip is likely someone at OAI, my guess is that they actually did check. But after the launch.
oliculipolicula··on OpenAI withdraws three mathematical results
The bigger question is why there was internal pressure to rush such a historic launch without having someone in the company, anyone, check the proofs first.

This concerns the Hodge conjecture (millennium prize related) paper. Seems to me like PhD nerds weren't confident bosses pushed ahead anyway.

oliculipolicula··on “Math 2.0” will need to value mathematical progress more holistically
Stupid, but could be fun: grants are given for how amusing your proposed prompts are.

Everyone should have a portfolio of prompts that are indecipherable by other humans but when fed to a frontier model, produces shocking one paragraph english version of a 10000 line lean proof

Obfuscated prompt grant contest

This, but for a generalised notion of "number" (that is, "proof")

oliculipolicula··on “Math 2.0” will need to value mathematical progress more holistically
Hmmmm. It feels right that discovery is much more meaningful than achievement. "Bullshit lean proof" or "bullshit achievement" smells like it. "bullshit discovery" smells like a front-handed insult
oliculipolicula··on Sharing AI progress in mathematics
>I believe that the optimal thing to do ... is to let the machines loose, see what happens, and then begin the journey to where they have stopped. Things are currently moving fast. They cannot move fast forever. But if we get on board now then they will take us to extraordinary new places. And after we have arrived, the new adventure will begin.

I'm relieved that this time around, they have provided partial reasoning traces and prompts for a small number of problems. Do they now also share data with the other model providers..

oliculipolicula··on The Future of Mathematics
Brace for impact.. OpenAI are going to dump their load

Looks like they are betting the downer from AGMAI is not going to hurt their cred where it matters (investors, and whales-- a mix of b-tier profs, postdocs, uni admins, and wealthy crackpots)

My own is there won't be prompts, traces, whatever, like AGMAI asked for. Same old style. Navier-Stokes "worked". People outside unglamorous analysis swallowed it.

One hope is that everyone will know someone whose years of work went for nought. By hearsay, the pipeline of whales will be broken (only hitting openAI revenues in a couple of years postIPO, however)

Your move, Anthropic

oliculipolicula··on Nobel Prize in Physics 2026: Francis Halzen
Uh not sure Halzen personally made discoveries, in the original sense of the word!

Indeed, "in-spiraling" seems more like a one-man discovery (or has more of a chance to become one) than many (not all, obv) nobel prize winning work

The mechanism for which Higgs was awarded was also independently discovered by at least ten other people (I can't count)

>The Higgs mechanism is therefore also called the Brout–Englert–Higgs mechanism, or Englert–Brout–Higgs–Guralnik–Hagen–Kibble mechanism,[9] Anderson–Higgs mechanism,[10] Anderson–Higgs–Kibble mechanism,[11] Higgs–Kibble mechanism by Abdus Salam[12] and ABEGHHK'tH mechanism (for Anderson, Brout, Englert, Guralnik, Hagen, Higgs, Kibble, and 't Hooft)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higgs_mechanism

Can't wait for OpenAI to get the nobel prize; Swedes are more sympathetic than mathematicians!! (so that human beings might completely separate discovery from reward/awards/recognition. Discovery is a human right!!!)

oliculipolicula··on Is mathematics over, or just graduating?
OP calls that "betting against the airplane".

Let's fight that, not by rejecting tech, but by making OP sound silly. Without citing personal experience. Using vague arguments. Repeating oneself. (Sorry dang!!)

Modern jets turned commercial pilots into bullshit jobbers! But drones turned jet fightin' into a bullshit job! (And you can argue some Ukrainians should Santos-Dumont it in a biplane, turning subsonic drone piloting into a bullshit job

https://youtu.be/gBxQixJfOzk )

In aviation, it's the parasailers and the wingsuiters who find most meaning in what they do. That's because planes can't really do what they do. Planes can never do what we really want to do... Which is... Fly like a bird.

LLMs will probably never help us navigate the universe like a god. That's what math promised us!!

(I'm still hoping that some future (bio)Tech will help us fly like a bird, etc, ... That does sound much more likely than Language Light and Magic (LLM))

Judging by performance in true team sports (except women's v-ball) one might argue US is slightly ahead in the collectivism, culturally speaking..

Is chips a true team sport? I would guess, no.

oliculipolicula··on LinkedIn Larpmaxxing
Yes. To me, your point underscores that (my fave insufferable "dual pair" of treasure) Taleb is more like an orthodox economist than he'd like to admit, and PG is more like a (fin)techbro than he'd care to admit. The pride differential in the info differential, I think?

(What role does gender/species play here, ha, I haven't thought much about _that_)

oliculipolicula··on I can't tell who's teaching who anymore
Ah.. starts to make a bit of sense.

It could be like when I step into an unfamiliar cafe, I can sort of tell straightaway it's a Korean and not Japanese just by the "nonsymbolic" interior design.

Would you say it's the opposite of wabi-sabi? That's supposed to "taste natural" I think. But raw.

Seems like two opposite "cultural","statistical" decisions starting from the same commercial question

oliculipolicula··on Musk, the Movie
Almost certainly agree. the gap is filled by my peculiar paranoia, which has something to do with how deftly (precisely?) Sam, alone, is tacking the political winds

(Better compare Altman with Thiel, yes, low-key maturity, children, more relationships under the belt(?), detachment from operations.. but also more worrying than Musk because of the access to influence/sophisticated "team-play". I wonder at the chatrooms/mailing lists that now have Thiel+Altman+Zuck+Karp but not Musk)

oliculipolicula··on Musk, the Movie
Deradicalisation gradient here is positive, don't you think?

https://www.reddit.com/r/SipsTea/comments/1vhe955/everything...

The postpandemic moves would then be less extreme than before (one commenter went so far as to say that they were already zero)

Sam Altman's upcoming midlife crises are more worrying. This other man has been surfing his.

The space laser thing was (unsurprisingly in different ways to different people) just a minor readjustment..

Maybe the fact is that inward spiralling sounds like an auto(dep/reg)ressive ideology (same as outward spiralling) to outsiders

You know the Yeats poem?

Maybe my own ideology, when projected, looks like this

https://nilesjohnson.net/hopf.html

(Imagine that all these threads are connected before the projection, maybe by "connecting the "point" of "each linkage" thus "foliating" 4D space" -- "to infinity and back"!)

oliculipolicula··on Meta Blocks President Lula's Facebook Page, Campaign Ads 2 Weeks from Election
I'm watching out for right (anti-other, ancaps) and left (anti-status quo, ansocs) getting together to fight the centrists.

Eg Bannon+Sanders against AI, but led by much younger people including women/LGBTQXXX.. strangely, this might happen in Japan/US/LA first not EU/EA because urban youth are more polarized in the earlier set?? The ancap against AI angle is particularly interesting-- YC already has some of it.. so what it might take would be the anti-other to first reach entente with the LGBTQ/left-identitarians/feminists/antiZionists, that is, recognizing "institutional-AI" as a bigger threat than "patriarchy"

Btw.. HN feels to me like Thiel-like (in methods, not stance) propagandists for the Convivial-Institution weaponizing their growing hoard of humane but "incidentally" individualist stories. (Because fun details about bureaucracy are structurally rare in comparison)

Friendly, knowledgeable oldbeards (men) finding their energetic curious young "broccoli haired" successors, to make this sound more... Immunogenic ;)

oliculipolicula··on Probing picosecond depairing currents in type-II superconductors
"Insiders" (ahem why does OP think this is interesting ) chip in on the following and others? They could also be standard, but I an likely much more wrong about how interesting they are?

1) frequency upconverted light with BBO generates photocurrents (But it doesn't seem like the measurement itself is "quantum-enhanced"? As I understand it the process generates entangled photon pairs?)

2)etching gold with very mild chemicals (KI would be a health supplement after your nuclear apocalypse. YBCO in your cup of phosphoric acid doesn't seem so bad either)

oliculipolicula··on Why is Hacker News like that?
Btw I might have made a mistake of searching for "breckyunits".

Now I remember benreesman.. but maybe the last flagged comment is beyond my search-fu?

(I remember these two oldtimers because I sympathize with their "far-left" anticorpo yet agentic vibes)

oliculipolicula··on Why is Hacker News like that?
By Soviet I meant more of inscrutability: [unsatisfactory] window into _why_ someone was thrown out of a window, not how.

Apparently that "unsatisfactory" does have (imagined) personal component for me. The process, for you, was less imagined.. so.. okay. I should be more careful next time

oliculipolicula··on Why is Hacker News like that?
though there must have been backroom warnings, the disappearance of breckyunits feels a bit Soviet

Considered that it seems intellectually valuable (~nontrivially eutriptic) for an outsider or breck(/g?????m) to understand what part of his value system was diametrically opposed to the spirit of HNtopia

The humaneness seemed at worst ambiguous but that's not the issue.. maybe self-compassion was?

oliculipolicula··on Did OpenAI solve the wrong Navier-Stokes problem?
Exactly! One effect of the committee might be to benefit Ant by its presence alone.. if only by striking fear in OpenAI.. Ant don't even need to thank them at once

Let's say they do not much on Ant's findings but edge on the NDA with OpenAI. That might even be PR victory for mathematicians

oliculipolicula··on Why is Hacker News like that?
The power of local equilibrium

I'd hazard that someone is waiting-not-waiting, like Smaug, for a systems quant (bonus: lisper) to enter the cave to do equilibrium teleportation experiments on votes and flags

(I am secretly hoping that this is a silent-smoke-out-of-ears --and not self-extinguishing-- comment)

oliculipolicula··on Did OpenAI solve the wrong Navier-Stokes problem?
I wish there were some better way to see, before the IPO, how openAI's actions correlate with their bottomline.

(I'm proAI (for the masses, but green) BUT antiopenAI and a bit less antiAnthropic. For me it's all about the personalities.. the people in oAI are deeply uncool. not so in Ant. Dario is still dangerous, but I guess sexily dangerous lol

https://www.linkedin.com/posts/corywarfield_aigenerated-humo... )

oliculipolicula··on Did OpenAI solve the wrong Navier-Stokes problem?
Today that point is moot because.. including this one, the Mill problems that are most likely to have been solved are least likely to have real world impact..

Extrapolating on that, I'll take on the biased hope that almost none of the 100 solutions to be released will have any applications for at least 30 years.. (besides PR wins for AI companies)

In order to counter the fear (my own lonely one) that the 9 big names will not be able to hold the execs to account or get openAI to act "more responsibly" (whatever that means).. in the form of direct hits to new subs or partnerships or funding

I plead guilty to any accusations of (vicarious) sour grapes or sympathy for the weak

Point to you, because.. the committee would make more sense if they also bring Ant to the table.. unfortunately nerds will be nerds, so perhaps, to you, and I'll reluctantly concede, mathematicians deserve to be serfs

More: after OAI've mangled whatever value is left of the results (once again), HN could start braying for the training data/weights. Or even the prompts

Sashas of the world, unite!

Gerko, to donate GPUs for openweight serving

Elbakyan, to release some gpt7 related torrents

Others? Wei?

oliculipolicula··on The Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence
On UDC, internally they had Alexander Wei, Hongxun Wu, Chen Lijie. TCS people. As gobetweens to Daniel Litt.

On N-S I think nobody internally felt confident enough to publicly step up. So Bubeck had to wing it.

It remains to be seen which of the big names will work with whom inside the org
