olah_1··on USENET rises again?
ActivityPub servers own your account. This is a non-starter for me unless someone holds server admins accountable to laws or some kind of liability
olah_1··on Shamir Secret Sharing
Has this been implemented in stuff yet?
olah_1··on Show HN: Obl.ong, Free, quality domains for all
I would rather just use a public key. No need for an entity (no matter how benevolent) to manage my identity for me.

In terms of the vibe that something gives off, stuff is usually "cooler" when it seems like you didn't care that much. A random pubkey is as care-free as it gets.

olah_1··on What happened to Vivaldi Social?
Yeah, because Mastodon is the most happening place online lol. I can't believe people on hacker news talk like this. Embarrassing how far this community has declined. Can't even discuss protocols without these stupid comments.
olah_1··on What happened to Vivaldi Social?
Perhaps better is decentralized twitter (Nostr). Your account doesn't live on a server and you send events to multiple servers if you want to. If one server goes down, it hardly impacts you.
olah_1··on Become Ungoogleable
I know I’m not going to get results from smaller pages when I search google. It makes me think I might as well make a list of 20 popular websites and just search all of those and collate the results
olah_1··on Official Mastodon server of the Dutch government
This is what I always wanted to see. Municipalities running federated servers. Solves the problem of "which server do I pick" and also gives user guarantees that are tangibly bound to real entities.

I think a whole nation is too big for one server of course. But some kind of breakdown based on reasonable subsidiarity would be great. In the US, maybe it would be counties. Sort of like phone numbers, you may choose to keep your original area code even after you move, or eventually maybe you update and move your account to the new server when you settle in.

olah_1··on A Japanese factory that designs clothes on a 40-year-old computer [video]
> cassettes have a kind of built-in "soft" DRM feature, in that reproduction is possible but goes hand-in-hand with a loss in quality

Not just reproduction. Even just listening to them a bunch goes hand-in-hand with a loss in quality. Unplanned obsolescence?

olah_1··on A Look at Bluesky
> I don't think there is any sign of this being true outside a small techy bubble.

This is another advantage for Bluesky. Because as of now, a user of BlueSky would have no clue that it is "decentralized" at all. In comparison, Nostr shoves it in your face that it is totally unlike anything you're used to.

Bluesky just appears as a Twitter alternative. And I think that is very smart of them. Because realistically, only very serious people/companies should consider running alternative relay servers. Relays come and go on Nostr because people underestimate the amount of work / money involved in running them.

olah_1··on Tell HN: Twitter switched temporarily to rate limited mode
Their use of ActivityPub is just a way to quickly bootstrap social media functionality using time tested libraries. Just like they did with XMPP.
olah_1··on Africa’s Richest City Is Crumbling Under Chaos and Corruption
Have you considered that skin color is more than just skin color? That a people, a culture, is more than the amount of melanin they have?

The idea that everyone is a blank slate wrapped in different colors of skin seems quite reductive, if not insulting to the beauty of human diversity, given the real science behind genetics.

olah_1··on Africa’s Richest City Is Crumbling Under Chaos and Corruption
Where does culture come from?
olah_1··on Africa’s Richest City Is Crumbling Under Chaos and Corruption
The most frustrating thing about decline like this is that we aren’t even allowed to ask the questions that would set us on a path to figuring it out.

The Overton Window[0] is set in such a way to perfectly ensure that the decline continues.

olah_1··on Val Town Pro - $10/month for more compute, storage, private vals
I bet Nostr[1] integration in scripts will unlock tons of value for this. A totally open messaging and posting protocol that is maximally simple.

olah_1··on Val Town Pro - $10/month for more compute, storage, private vals
You used to be able to do something very similar with Perl, right? A bunch of independent scripts that were basically web endpoints? I forget the name of those little scripts...

edit: CGI ?

olah_1··on Mastodon provides the highest (over 12%) engagement under posts
I follow 400 people on Twitter and only see the same 10 accounts non-stop. Nobody else. Where is everyone else I follow? Honestly, I think they're mostly shadowbanned or de-ranked. Who knows why.
olah_1··on Meta announces its Quest 3 VR headset
> text is barely readable.

I understand what you're saying, and I agree, but it's like saying a party is boring because there are no books.

The whole "meta" concept is that you're socializing in VR and it feels as if you're talking to your friend directly. I'm sure the resolution has improved in the new model, but even still, super sharp text isn't as important as you'd think to make the fundamental social use cases work

olah_1··on Comparing iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 14 for Astrophotography
You basically have to zoom in on the camera app to get a 50mm equivalent photo. This isn't as bad as it seems though. The 2x quality is quite good on the baseline photos these days.

However, on the "pro" iphone models, they do have a "telephoto" lense that is indeed a 50mm equivalent that will get you the perspective that you're used to.

Here is the one on the iPhone 14 Pro -> 12MP 2x Telephoto (enabled by quad-pixel sensor): 48 mm

Personally, I use an iPhone 8 plus and pretty much always take images on 2x zoom. Because yeah everyone looks better on a longer lense.

olah_1··on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Release
> and the clearly computer-generated matrix-y shrines

Good observation. Compare with Ocarina's temples which felt genuinely scary.

olah_1··on The Vietnamese military has an actual troll army and Facebook is its weapon
> I am absolutely sure they are doing this either via a contractor, ally, or inside cyber command or DIA etc

Or they use AI. Would be very easy actually.

olah_1··on I downloaded all 1.6M posts on Bluesky
Is there such a thing as private posts? or “friends only” posts or something? Or is it all public?
olah_1··on Discord’s username change is causing discord
> Globally unique usernames just aren't relevant.

And if some users think they are relevant, let it be an optional additional name for premium users.

olah_1··on How to set your domain as your handle
> All it needs to do is to get rid of the invite system

Exactly. The hype will be dead by the time people can actually join.

If we look at the example of Clubhouse, the invite system just pissed a lot of people off. So by the time they finally opened up the app to the public, the goodwill of the potential userbase was spoiled.

Invite systems feel bad and hurt your relationship with your future users.

olah_1··on How to set your domain as your handle
One thing about Nostr is that there is no authentication to retrieve data. So the data can be spread far and wide, without permission.

This can obviously be both good or bad depending on what your use case is!

I think that BlueSky has authentication so that the data only is retrievable on the server specified by the user.

Because of this, I think BlueSky is better for personal social use cases where the user wants to maintain control and feel a bit more safe.

olah_1··on Better World Books
This store is great. But I also want to point out that there are more specialty bookstores too. I got a couple Rudolf Steiner books from a store dedicated to those and they sent me a handwritten card and such. Really nice experience when you’re not used to it
olah_1··on Framework Laptop 16
Isn’t the idea of a modular computer defeated if only one company has a monopoly on the modules that you can buy?
olah_1··on The Oberon+ Programming Language
I really see how Nim was influenced by Oberon now. Will Oberon+ actually compete with Nim in some ways?
olah_1··on Show HN: Modern Font Stacks – New system font stack CSS for modern OSs
Old style numerals are my favorite actually.

There aren't that many descenders in lowercase English, but in a script like Shavian where there are many, the old style figures feel really "at home".

olah_1··on Launch HN: Pynecone (YC W23) – Web Apps in Pure Python
In the documentation, I don't see any mention of including external libraries. For example, do you have to do something special to use this nostr library with Pynecone?
