okwubodu··on Since mid-April, the Fed has withdrawn ~$140B of liquidity from financial system
It was their money in the first place.
okwubodu··on The future of cryptocurrency is at stake in Ethereum’s switch
1) Effectively no. I don’t think they even care anymore.

2) Rich people had more power under POW—miners aren’t cheap. What matters is the enforcement mechanism. Slashing remains a risk to every validator regardless of stake weight.

okwubodu··on FDIC issues cease and desist letter to FTX US [pdf]
Given that this tweet

> brokerage accounts are SIPC-insured, cash associated with brokerage accounts is managed into FDIC-insured accounts at our partner bank

is still up, I imagine the imprecision of the statement is what the FDIC took issue with.

okwubodu··on Gen Z have 86% less purchasing power compared to baby boomers in their twenties
Unsubstantiated guess: insane P/E ratios became the norm and maintaining them is harder when you’re raising salaries.
okwubodu··on Android 13
They've arguably already hit it. Apple has been testing overengineered features that are suspiciously well suited for AR in broad daylight for a few years now. If they can't pull it off, I don't think anyone can.
okwubodu··on OnlyFans bribed Meta to put porn stars on terror watchlist: lawsuits
Americans across the political spectrum are generally very okay with invasions of privacy, excessive force, rights violations, etc. as long as they’re targeted at the “right” people (criminals that deserve it). They’re incredibly difficult issues to advocate for because most people either a) think the victim deserved it for being a criminal, or b) would eventually think the same given a wide enough selection of victims.
okwubodu··on Why Is the Human Brain So Efficient?
This is most obvious in soccer and basketball where you’ll see two similarly skilled players almost get stuck in place trying to predict the other’s next move.
okwubodu··on Rumor: Google Stadia May Be Getting Shut Down
What we need is a portable digital license. Like a card we can store in a sort of internet wallet and present to storefronts to get access to a game. That way publishers wouldn’t be able to bully customers to the extent they currently do.

No way the gaming community would be opposed to such a thing.

okwubodu··on Electrical engineers on the brink of extinction threaten entire tech ecosystems
Meanwhile, CS is reaping the benefits of a decade and a half of pushing the “Anyone can code!” narrative. CE and EE’s disdain for juniors and rampant credentialism will inevitably become a national security issue.
okwubodu··on Celsius acknowledges $1.2B hole in balance sheet
The main difference is not being PayPal: https://hn.algolia.com/?q=paypal+account
okwubodu··on It’s time to make that indie C# game in Godot
Personally, I think they were a bit generous there.

I’m not sure what it is but it’s gotten significantly worse over the past few years and I’ve stopped recommending it to new game devs.

okwubodu··on Niantic undergoes layoffs, cancels four games
It’s in a weird spot as one of the biggest successes in gaming history while also representing one of the biggest fumbles in gaming history.

Pokémon Go with a more aggressive turnaround time could have easily been Fortnite x10.

okwubodu··on FBI Child ID App
Yep, it has almost the same feature set as the dev API. You can get really specific without knowing what exactly you’re searching for.
okwubodu··on FBI Child ID App
Very common. I suspect they slowed down post-2020.

okwubodu··on FTX closes in on a deal to buy embattled crypto lender BlockFi for $25M
Edited. Thanks.
okwubodu··on FTX closes in on a deal to buy embattled crypto lender BlockFi for $25M
This has been disputed by BlockFi’s CEO: https://twitter.com/blockfizac/status/1542582904110317568
okwubodu··on Rust 1.62.0
I find Rust much easier to hold in my head as well. It’s reduced the need for mid-session, “just-in-case” compilations to the point that building sometimes feels like a formality.
okwubodu··on Optical microphone can separate multiple instruments from afar
That blew me away before I even finished the paper.
okwubodu··on Experiment: Pay students to tackle learning loss
After a certain point, cheating at scale is just studying.
okwubodu··on Bitcoin falls 12.1% to $23,366; Ether dropped 13.62% to $1,237.72
When they say “close” it’s usually referring to the candle chart on some timeframe. In this case the previous 24h candle closed in the mid ~$26500s and dropped ~$3200.
okwubodu··on Coinbase CEO Tweets ‘Quit and Find a Company You Believe In’
Sure, but that’s more “my politics” than “apolitical”. Their messaging should reflect that.
okwubodu··on Apple Unveils M2
> But I'm also a "weirdo" who doesn't like Apple-made hardware

Please, it’s not that weird of an opinion.

> (the trackpad […] are all inferior IMO)

Oh.

But I think I agree when it comes to anything like drag-and-drop.

okwubodu··on The crypto-skeptics’ voices are getting louder
Useless assets going to zero is business as usual in the field. It happened last time, and the time before that, and the time before that.
okwubodu··on Seattle police stopped investigating new adult sexual assaults this year
> Nobody wants to do a job where they could get shot in the face during a traffic stop and still be demonized by society for it.

I heavily doubt that's what they're being "demonized" for.

okwubodu··on Ford CEO says EVs will be sold 100% online with nonnegotiable price
I wouldn’t be surprised if over 50% were aware, but whether they’re strongly favorable enough to buy one at the moment is up in the air.

There are a lot of F150s though, and the Lightning’s design is distinct enough that it advertises itself even with a tiny fraction of owners actually converting.

Also, the ridiculous things people are going to try towing with that much torque will win some over as well.

okwubodu··on Two thought experiments to evaluate automated stablecoins
Of course, it’s an architecture decision. They do different things and different considerations may lead you to one or the other.
okwubodu··on Two thought experiments to evaluate automated stablecoins
It makes the most sense when you're managing liquidity between multiple parties. I bet it would still be a logical next step if they couldn't get a PR boost off the hype.
okwubodu··on We Aren't Raising Adults. We Are Breeding Excellent Sheep
It sounds like the “sheep” in question are pushing very strongly in a direction but just not one the author likes. Is letting people talk to you and your cohort anyhow more sheeplike than standing up for them?
okwubodu··on YC W22 Stablegains is being sued for losing $42M in funds from 4878 customers
$42 million of real people’s money was lost. That’s a net negative to society whether or not it shows up on a balance sheet.
okwubodu··on YC W22 Stablegains is being sued for losing $42M in funds from 4878 customers
The last few weeks (months, really) has highlighted an incredible lack of discernment in the VC-verse wrt the thing we call web3. Now. I have no experience doing what YC does and don’t claim to, but the jig here was so transparent that the smallest drop of “street smart” should’ve been enough to set off some alarms.

We’re approaching a point where being passed over for “culture fit” is a compliment. Hopefully the embarrassment is enough to expand the founder vetting checkboxes.
