okaram··on Ask HN: How influential can physical appearance be in professional environments?
There's two meanings to attractive... One is you like them physically, another is 'a lot of people would like them', or more prosaically, 'a lot of people would like to have sex with them'.

You can see who other people are attractive (either famous or around you), and infer from there.

okaram··on A small town that saved its only grocery store by buying it
I completely understand; I came from Mexico and it took me 20 years to stop seeing the government as always corrupt.

Private ownership opens it to all sorts of exploitation of workers or customers, plus if you subsidize it, you just move the politicking to the subsidy contract, and the bad decision making to the owner.

okaram··on A small town that saved its only grocery store by buying it
I think you're mixing concepts... It's a free market economy if you can choose who to buy from; it's a democracy if the citizens choose the rules and laws, which may prohibit you from buying certain things.
okaram··on A small town that saved its only grocery store by buying it
I think the big difference is that government is mandatory, whereas belonging to a co-op is voluntary. Both are useful and important.
okaram··on Subprime loans for college hiding in plain sight
Well, STEM degrees could also be replaced by just reading the course syllabus... It's just a lot harder, just like with humanities degrees.
okaram··on U.S. appeals court rejects big tech’s right to regulate online speech
You expect way too much of the justice system... The 'peers' on HN are very different from the peers on an average jury
okaram··on Some WFH employees now live in another country
You know? It's called a vacation... We used to have those, even in the USA ;)

Notice taxew are not a big deal for small companies... If Thailand wants to send my small restaurant a tax bill, I'd just drop it in the round file.

If I'm a big company and do business in Thailand, then I have to abide by their laws.

okaram··on Some WFH employees now live in another country
In theory I don't care where the bytes come from.

In reality, there are IP kind of laws, contract enforcement, taxes, time zones ...

okaram··on Walking is good for health but walking faster is even better, study finds
It heavily depends on usage and weight. 10K steps is 1.5 to 2 hours of walking.

I'm quite overweight, and my tennis shoes last me ~6 months in good shape.

okaram··on Amazon CEO says company will slow hiring rate, no hard return to office planned
One factor I haven't seen mentioned is that Amazon has a split-personality problem.

AWS is a tech company. Reasonably comparable with other FAANGs, with wide variation within teams.

Amazon is a logistics company with a web site. Logistics companies treat their employees very differently than tech companies. Amazon proper seems to me to have split personality.

Warehouse employees are treated badly, but pretty well in many ways, compared to other warehouse employees.

Tech employees at Amazon are treated well, but I can see an exec that came through the logistics part having a different mentality.

okaram··on W2UI is a JavaScript UI library for building rich web applications
I'm not sure if you already did the PR... I just see a few places where the word the is missing, which is fairly common for non-native English speakers.
okaram··on Ask HN: Location based pay is killing my motivation, how do others handle it?
It's a choice by management,but it's an obvious choice.

We should not expect everyone to be a horrible person, only motivated by profit, but we also should not expect people to act against their own interests all the time.

okaram··on Ask HN: Location based pay is killing my motivation, how do others handle it?
Actually many companies will adjust salary if/when they bring you to the USA (usually, not initially to the same level as an equivalent American worker).
okaram··on Ask HN: Location based pay is killing my motivation, how do others handle it?
Please don't see this as a lack of empathy, but I think the only solution under your control is to apply to other positions and leave when you get a better one.

And if you apply to many and can't find a better one, then try to see it as 'they pay me better than anyone else' rather than they pay me less than others in the company.

I believe (but have no evidence) that smart companies will minimize the location differences to get better talent and will get a competitive advantage, but you may need to search ...

okaram··on Ask HN: Generalist contractors, what is your hourly rate?
Keep in mind it's not really 50%, more like 65? 2,000 hours means you work 40 hours/week, 50 weeks ... Basically no vacation, just a few holidays or sick days. We budget full time as 1,600 hours
okaram··on Why are Pakistan’s floods so extreme this year?
Current pop is 220M, already closer to 370 ... I can see it not growing much, but not decreasing.
okaram··on Zuckerberg says FBI warning prompted Biden laptop story censorship
Did you see the word 'appears' there? What does authenticated means in this context? It may well mean 'the emails the times got are those emails' rather than 'the emails were truly between those parties, etc'
okaram··on Nobody wants to teach anymore
We already automate things and amplify somewhat the power of a teacher... We've been trying computer stuff for decades (and books before). You still need tons of teachers.
okaram··on Ask HN: Is WWIII already in its early stages?
> China preparing to invade Taiwan ...

There is, as of now, no evidence China is preparing to invade anything. There's always sable rattling, hasn't happened yet.

> Wars happen when two or nation's drive for self-preservation collide

That's a naive view of war, which ignores individual a-holes. There's no self-preservation in Russia invading Ukraine...

I understand it's easy to despair and fear seeing some of the things happening in the world. I am much more optimistic.

okaram··on Caste in California: Tech giants confront ancient Indian hierarchy
I'm not from India, but ... Think about how easy it is to identify race, or region, or social class in the USA. It's probably the same thing.
okaram··on The unclear future for gifted-and-talented education
I've no clue what you are talking about. It is perfectly OK to say mathematically gifted student
okaram··on Malcolm Gladwell opposes WFH while he works from his couch for the last 20 years
BTW, if you are in the USA, no, we're not in a recession.
okaram··on Polio Detected in US
They do protect against infection, even against Omicron variants.

The protection goes down over time, and it is less for many of the variants, but it is way greater than 0.

okaram··on The trimodal nature of software salaries in the Netherlands and Europe (2021)
I don't think it's just to keep them from other companies, it's that the returns on the projects that do see the light of day are so huge, that it makes sense for tech companies to have 10 of those and discard 9.
okaram··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
Even when the fetus becomes a baby, it still matters. You are forcing another person to help that baby, in a much stronger (albeit temporary) way than any other.

Think about it; you are not required to help somebody if they're in an accident or a fire; you're not required to donate blood, but you would require a woman to donate blood and nutrients, spent several months of hardship and have a small but non-zero risk of serious health problems.

At some point it changes; in my mind, around viability. If the baby is delivered, you cannot kill it (you may be required to take care of it, although many states allow you to give up your kids).

Somewhere around 6 months, we might require a woman to give birth... Maybe

okaram··on Ask HN: Having trouble getting senior applicants, wondering what to do about it
I think you're not giving us enough information. Do you have numbers/percentages for each stage?

Is the problem that you aren't getting enough applications? At what stages are you filtering what percentage of applicants? This can help you debug your process ;)

Sorry, since this may be beating a dead horse, but ... Are you sure your salary/TCO is actually competitive (and wins some of the competitions ;)?

okaram··on Ask HN: Tesla is making us move or quit. Would I get severance?
This really means that Tesla wants to reduce their workforce by 10% ;)

OTOH, the pandemic is probably over as a big public health problem, which doesn't mean we won't have local, short-lived lockdowns in the USA.

okaram··on Carmakers feel chip crisis easing
I haven't found the safety data, but was very surprised when my new car was way cheaper to insure than my old one. I assume the insurance companies have the data.

This may not be safer as in better crash resilience, but safer as in you have a backup camera, and side sensors for changing lanes.

okaram··on Ask HN: What Is Your Number?
> my favorite and least favorite country on earth.

You just summarized my thoughts exactly.
