ohples··on Chip shortage: Toyota to cut global production by 40%
I seem to recall most cars built before the mid-80s just had 5 digit odometers.
ohples··on HHS announces rule to protect consumers from surprise medical bills
If every other developed nation was able to provide unicorns and lollipops to its citizens regardless of their ability to pay, and the United States couldn't I would also be asking for Universal unicorns and lollipops.
ohples··on HHS announces rule to protect consumers from surprise medical bills
Agreed
ohples··on HHS announces rule to protect consumers from surprise medical bills
Universal Healthcare, free at the point of use.
ohples··on When Orcs Were Real
TIL what "InfoGalactic" is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vox_Day#Infogalactic

After clicking some of the links in this article I went to what looked very much like wikipedia, so much so i went on a typical half hour wikipedia-dive, but wasn't actually wikipeida (I have a big monitor and the links I clicked all directed to subsections of articles so I didn't see the info-galactic logo at the top).

Really puts this article in a whole new (bad) light.

ohples··on Researchers chart path to drastically lower administrative costs of health care
Universal Healthcare, free at the point of delivery.
ohples··on We mailed one hundred letters to test the postal service
Yet another reason why suburbia is expensive and not sustainable https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVUeqxXwCA0
ohples··on Bank of England to explore a potential Central Bank Digital Currency
I'm curious what is the situation in the UK with regards to the universalness of banking services, especially electronic ones. .

In the US we have a large portion of the population that is "unbanked" for a varaity of reasons and have to rely on sketchy and scam financial services like those prepaid debit and credit cards and "check cashing places".

ohples··on Spotify continues to remove Joe Rogan episodes
Hosting audio is a multiple orders of magnitude easier then video, which means platforms don't have as much value to add.
ohples··on Jurigged – Hot code reloading for Python
Hot code reloading (ala Erlang) is often used in embedded devices for control code where restarting is very expensive. Mostly telco and networking devices.
ohples··on Roads Are Getting Deadlier for Pedestrians
For anyone who wishes to learn more about this sort of stuff I recommend The War on Cars podcast https://thewaroncars.org/

Also, Not Just Bikes on YouTube https://youtube.com/c/NotJustBikes

ohples··on Roads Are Getting Deadlier for Pedestrians
You also have to consider most people cant live near where they work because it is illegal to build affordable housing near where they work.
ohples··on Roads Are Getting Deadlier for Pedestrians
Thats because in most places in the US driving is a necessity in order to function in society. So we need to make it stupid simple for people to maintain a drivers license, less we want them to end up homeless.

IMHO the only way for such a culture to emerge is if driving is not something that is required by a mass amount of people.

ohples··on Roads Are Getting Deadlier for Pedestrians
Because people are riding their bikes and walking to get places, not just recreationally . Those bike trails are probably great for a nice weekend trip, but not getting groceries or going to work.
ohples··on Suez canal blocked by a massive ship
One thing I learned from reading about this is that Rotterdam is the destination of a large amount of China to Europe trade.

Is there really not a suitably developed Mediterranean port closer to Suez? Is there work on one?

ohples··on How America Bankrupted its Cities [video]
> safer for kids to run around.

ohples··on Uber discovered they’d been defrauded out of 2/3 of their ad spend
I feel like a company like Uber could of been justified put the large majority of there ad budget into well placed physical ads in cities and airports.
ohples··on EU countries team up for semiconductor push
I work in IT in the US, and if someone offered me a job with a visa in Europe, with the potential for permanent stay. Even if it was 1/2 my current salary I would probably take it, depending on the country it was in.
ohples··on Xilinx-Samsung SmartSSD Computational Storage Drive Launched
Optane wasn't part of the sale https://uk.reuters.com/article/intel-divestiture-sk-hynix/so...
ohples··on Why American cities can’t keep up with infrastructure maintenance (2017)
Hot take: Its mostly just car infrastructure thats the cause of the problem. We spent way too much money for a large car-centric transport network that doesn't scale. Stop subsidizing and prioritizing cars as a primary form of transit and you fix most of the issues.
ohples··on A Brief Cultural History of the Parking Lot
Parking lots don't have culture, they take from it.
ohples··on Airline pilots landing at LAX report “a guy in jetpack” flying alongside them
How is it 2020 and no one got a video of this. Hopefully some airport security camera got it, and they will release the video at some point.
ohples··on Portland passes low-density zoning reform
What does this have to do with EVs?

I agree that getting rid of government mandated parking will decrease government-subsidized car storage (which is good across the board). Sure that will affect EVs, but it will also affect ICEs equally.

ohples··on U.S. prosecutors seek 27 months imprisonment for former Uber self-driving head
Please don't use the word "accident" here. There was clearly negligence involved.
ohples··on It’s Time to Abolish Single-Family Zoning
I'm willing to make the concession that any urban area with > 100,000 should probably not have single family zoning.

Build your McMansion out int the boonies, just don't expect me to subsidize it with my tax dollars

ohples··on Openstreetmap, a global map for worldwide insight
Depends on what you definition of OSM based map is. Technically Apple Maps is, since its using data from them, as well as others:

If you click the info box in Apple Maps underneath the Tom Tom logo it says © Openstreetmap contributers and other providers

Full list: https://gspe21-ssl.ls.apple.com/html/attribution-156.html

ohples··on The KDE community is moving to GitLab
It's not perfect, but for a lot of smaller projects it's fine.

Also way easier to send someone a web link to something in a discussion to have them look into it, especially if it's in a different branch then they may have.

ohples··on How well do cars do in crash tests they're not optimized for?
Those are just driver deaths.
ohples··on How well do cars do in crash tests they're not optimized for?
> Car accidents is top1-top2 death reason in US for people in 20-40 age group [1]

Car crashes where the top 1-2. I am willing to bet most of those involved DUI, and therefore negligence, and shouldn't be classed as "accidents"

#CrashNotAccident.

ohples··on How well do cars do in crash tests they're not optimized for?
Also, don't forget. Crash tests (in the US atleast) don't measure safety for non-occupants, ie pedestrians, other car users.
