ohbleek··on Elite MBA Programs Report Steep Drop in Applications
That was not data, that was a guess about your class.
ohbleek··on A rise in vegetarian options leads customers to embrace meat-free meals
I get so tired of this argument. If you were raised eating meat then you'll likely have tendencies to eat meals based around meat. Meat substitutes make sense in the current world and given the typical diet of western cultures. It doesn't have to taste just like the meat it mocks, it just has to taste good. There is nothing special about the taste of chicken or beef other than it is good and you're used to it. If something is similar it doesn't have to be exact and if it doesn't hit that mark it doesn't make it inferior. Chances are most meat doesn't taste the same and has various levels of quality but people don't have the same level of scrutiny between choices of chicken as they do between fake chicken and real chicken. I have given fake buffalo chicken sandwiches to friends before that had no idea at all that it wasn't real until I told them (Iknew about any allergies beforehand). Please excuse my tone, I've been veg for +10 years now and I'm tired of hearing the same weak arguments and excuses. People eat too much meat and it's time to stop making excuses. It's not necessary to stop eating it completely if you don't want to but you shouldn't be eating it more than a few times each week. The nuance of your argument is not lost on me, in fact I agree with the main point but not the part meant to persuade.
ohbleek··on Microsoft introduces Windows 10 X for dual-screen devices
If you think there isn’t a market for a dual screen device, step into a med school or any professional school. Half of my classmates carry around two devices specifically to have a second screen for referencing videos, notes, articles, etc... personally I can’t wait to get the neo. I have a 15” surface book 2 and it’s served me well but I would love a second screen with the same versatility of my sb2.
ohbleek··on What Statistics Can and Can’t Tell Us About Ourselves
Just to add to your comment: Excess mortality is the number of deaths, or mortality, caused by a specific disease, condition, or exposure to harmful circumstances such as radiation, environmental chemicals, or natural disaster. It's a measure of the deaths which occurred over and above the regular death rate that would be predicted (in the absence of that negative defined circumstance) for a given population.

Had the doctor not murdered any patients, he would have had the expected number of patient deaths, but the Cambridge statistician found that the number of patients that died under his care almost perfectly matched the expected number plus the number he murdered, meaning he was a statistically average doctor when he wasn’t murdering his patients.

ohbleek··on Court Says Using Chalk on Tires for Parking Enforcement Violates Constitution
The statement makes perfect sense. A closed system does not mean there cannot be an external actor. Your statement however, is intentionally superficially dispassionate.
ohbleek··on Burger King is introducing a vegetarian patty from the start-up Impossible Foods
These kinds of comparisons just don’t work and they come off as being an odd sort of defensive reply. Not to mention it’s a false equivalence. In the end though it’s a personal choice that really doesn’t need to be criticized, whether it is based on preference or ethical beliefs.
ohbleek··on Sci-Hub and Alexandra Basic Information
I truly hope she is able to find others she can work with in order to maintain and build Sci-Hub. She is an inspiration and a great example to those of us that believe in the ideals of transparency, freedom, and the pursuit of truth through science.
ohbleek··on Bitcoin ETF research finds that 95% of Bitcoin volume is fake
If I may, let me apply your comment to something else:

50% of phone calls made each day in the US are fake robocalls, that’s reflective of the phone system as a whole, wouldn’t you say?

The fake volume may be reflective of bitcoin price or the lack of regulation of bitcoin exchanges but I don’t think thenfake volume is reflective of bitcoin as a whole.

ohbleek··on U.S. to make More Drugs Easily Available, Cutting Role Doctors Play
This situation perfectly illustrates how underutilized pharmacists are in the health care system. A few states are passing laws that will allow pharmacists to prescribe certain medications but it’s happening slowly due to the typical pressures of lobbies and insurance companies.
ohbleek··on A California mall operator is sharing license plate tracking data with ICE
Even if private actors were not involved, there wouldn’t be any way to verify that the information was destroyed by a governmental department. I suppose that is a possible area where a public blockchain that broadcasts the storage and deletion of data could be useful but now everybody has stopped reading this comment so they can talk about how blockchain tech is useless. Regardless, the indefinite/temporary storage of tracking data needs to be addressed at some point.
ohbleek··on Facebook’s Surveillance Machine
I'm not sure I agree that it would be swept under the rug, seeing that you can mention those earlier issues without explaining them. Outrage and discussion occurred the same way they are now, and just like in those cases, not much is going to happen concerning facebook and its use of personal data. What I'm saying is that your assertion that it has anything to do with progressive/conservative narrative is false, because the result is going to be the same.
ohbleek··on FDA grants Breakthrough Therapy designation to MDMA for treatment of PTSD
I personally worked on developing the Investigative Brochure for procedure in preparation for the Phase 3 clinical trials at MAPS. The concerns regarding neurotoxicity are mitigated through dosage and low frequency. The ideal treatment plan would only include one session with a therapist in which the patient is given a dosage of MDMA, over a six month period. During that session it's possible for the patient to receive a supplemental dosage dependent on the needs of the patient and the recommendations of the therapist. This can be adjusted and in previous trials some patients have had 2 MDMA-assisted sessions over 6 months but it is not common so far and other options are being considered.
ohbleek··on Elon Musk confirms that he just bought back X.com, the domain he owned in 1999
I see your point but you're falling into circular logic, with PR becoming the answer to any question concerning his success. It's likely the case that great PR resulted from extraordinary products and those products succeeded from both solvIng problems and well, great PR.
ohbleek··on Sega releasing every console game for free with ads on mobile
They wouldn't be totally wrong if they made that argument. Although, I personally believe that if you already own the game in one format, it's fine to use a ROM on an emulator. I'm open to other arguments though.
ohbleek··on Most Vegetarians and Vegans Eventually Return to Meat
It's like the difference between a long-term member and someone on a trial membership. There is a difference.
ohbleek··on A lawsuit over Costco golf balls
I'm not sure where you get your Informaton but for one, in order to re-order contact lenses you must have a current rx (within 1-2 years) and it is standard to get an eye exam every year. Many people have eyesight that progressively gets worse and require a new rx yearly.

ohbleek··on Pardon Snowden
It doesn't stop terrorist attacks. You undermined your entire comment by implying that it does.
ohbleek··on PayPal Starts Banning VPN and SmartDNS Services
Good. They're just making the case for bitcoin.
ohbleek··on Japan Keeps This Defunct Train Station Running for Just One Passenger
Wow, Tokyo was nothing close to this for me. I only visited for two weeks but I was SURROUNDED by helpful people.

For example, on my second day there, right after getting off at my stop, I realized that I lost my phone on the bus. I waited at the stop and asked the bus driver on the next bus how I could retreive it. I speak zero japanese and he spoke no english. He asked over the speaker if anybody spoke english. A young girl came to the front and interpreted. He gave me a number to call. Then I gave the number to the woman at the front desk of our hotel. She said that the driver would DELIVER MY PHONE TO ME in the morning, and what time would I like to get it. I was flabberghasted. sure enough it was delivered the next morning.

That is only one example of the two weeks I spent in a city with the kindest and most helpful people I've ever met. I have so many examples of people going out of their way to help me in Tokyo.

I lived in Finland for years and your description sounds closer to their culture, but even then they were not as cold as you describe, but just very hesitant to help.

ohbleek··on The Caffeinated Lives of Bees
Their conclusions are confusing. The simplest explanation does not involve any bee psychology assumptions, but instead:

increased waggle dance from caffeine -> more energy exerted -> more trips to nectar to keep up energy levels

this assumes that caffeine has a stimulating effect the bees, but it still seems to be the simplest explanation

EDIT: now that I look at it, it's also possible that flowers containing caffeine have higher quality nectar under typical conditions, and so on....there are a lot of possibilities

ohbleek··on How a small streaming site became the Netflix for indie film
I love the site and found it through filmspotting. Any plans for adding support for kodi? (there's an addon already but it isn't updated regularly)
