ofslidingfeet··on Meta torrented & seeded 81.7 TB dataset containing copyrighted data
Yeah well, OpenAI compressed the whole internet into proprietary weights and is now providing access via paid subscription while the original internet gets deleted from our culture.
ofslidingfeet··on I had to take down my course-swapping site or be expelled
Par for the course in the prissiest, most Karen city culture in the entire country. Seriously, living in King County is like living in a giant HOA neighborhood.
ofslidingfeet··on Windshield pitting incidents in Washington reach fever pitch on April 15, 1954 (2003)
How many closed session hearings did the U.S. congress have over windshield pitting again?
ofslidingfeet··on Large language models in national security applications
Alternative title: "Obviously Irresponsible, Intellectually Lazy Things that We Definitely Haven't Been Doing for Fifteen Years."
ofslidingfeet··on Reddit banned me for developing Geddit
I think this contextualizes how hard they tried to make their site unusable on web browsers. "Front page of the internet." Thanks glowies.
ofslidingfeet··on Z-Library admins "escape house arrest" after judge approves U.S. extradition
I am so embarrassed of my fascist government that it is becoming intolerable.
ofslidingfeet··on Ask HN: What bothers you most about Scrum and how could it be fixed?
It gives manager types a way to pretend talking is working while inverting accountability which is prerequisite for any process they're willing to adopt.
ofslidingfeet··on Language is primarily a tool for communication rather than thought [pdf]
Basically a blogpost tbh, and it begs the question by defining language as verbal communication.
ofslidingfeet··on [dead]
In other news: OpenAI volunteers to integrate itself into all of Apple's products for free.
ofslidingfeet··on Microsoft to delay release of Recall AI feature on security concerns
Maybe the powers that be will have to come to terms with how they have *completely fucking obliterated all public trust in any large institution*.
ofslidingfeet··on [dead]
We're supposed to have free speech in the west. Shut the fuck up about Russia, the gestapo.
ofslidingfeet··on AI Chatbots Have Thoroughly Infiltrated Scientific Publishing
But don't forget that these are prestigious institutions and we should trust what their "experts" say without question or be shadowbanned from social media.
ofslidingfeet··on Ask HN: 4chan Archives Pre-2008?
Soon to be a question asked about the entire internet pre-2019.
ofslidingfeet··on Chechnya bans music outside the range of 80-116 beats per minute
You forgot to quote the part where I said the FBI won't stop blatantly interfering with elections.
ofslidingfeet··on Google lays off its Python team
t. Jerome Powell and Julie Su
ofslidingfeet··on Chechnya bans music outside the range of 80-116 beats per minute
I have to say, I'm just struck with astonishment to encounter a truism about "flexible government" as a defense of autocratic despotism.
ofslidingfeet··on Chechnya bans music outside the range of 80-116 beats per minute
Laws are tautologically in the domain of government.

edit: If the torture is unlawful, then the government is illegitimate. I'm not saying life doesn't suck; I'm just saying no actually citizens should not tolerate unjust laws just because making just laws is ~too hard~.

(I had to add this reply in an edit because this garbage ass gestapo run website is throttling my reply rate.)

ofslidingfeet··on The question that no LLM can answer and why it is important
Wow who ever knew that all we ever had to do was hand philosophy off to programmers, and they would have definitive answers to centuries old questions that we weren't even sure are answerable.
ofslidingfeet··on Chechnya bans music outside the range of 80-116 beats per minute
I'm sure their attempt to ban music with a given nominal feature will be a total success with no complications then.

If the government can't make coherent laws, that is the government's problem.

ofslidingfeet··on Chechnya bans music outside the range of 80-116 beats per minute
If a formal system isn't consistent, then it shouldn't work.
ofslidingfeet··on Bayer is getting rid of bosses and asking staff to ‘self-organize’
That doesn't sound like they have a big lawsuit/investigation on the radar or anything.
ofslidingfeet··on Senate passes reauthorization of key US surveillance program after midnight
Once upon a time, this would have been the only thing the internet talked about today. Top of reddit, thousands of comments on news articles, etc.

Now we get suppression and astroturfing from a bunch of autocrats who despise democracy and call themselves the "Intelligence Community."

ofslidingfeet··on Justice Department to file antitrust suit against Live Nation
I've never cared about anything less than I care about the price of stadium concert tickets.
ofslidingfeet··on US House approves FISA renewal – warrantless surveillance and all
Literally just fascist secret police, in real life.
ofslidingfeet··on Citizenship Privilege Harms Science
Cool, now do security clearances, i.e. the real citizenship now.
ofslidingfeet··on Twitter's pivot to x.com is a gift to phishers
All this heady analysis because a company changed its name without permission from gestapo.
ofslidingfeet··on Washington's Lottery forced to pull site after creating AI porn of lotto user
You make them sound important or rare or something.
ofslidingfeet··on The return of never-ending job interviews: 'It can go beyond the pale'
They have jobs where the interview isn't a hazing ritual. Those do exist, if you don't need a tech salary.
ofslidingfeet··on The return of never-ending job interviews: 'It can go beyond the pale'
We'll eventually get to the point where anyone willing to jump through these stupid hoops is primarily motivated by greed.
ofslidingfeet··on Washington's Lottery forced to pull site after creating AI porn of lotto user
I don't really buy that they accidentally used a model capable of generating nude breasts. This is either bored glowies trying to decide for everyone whether AI is acceptable or the woman is lying.
