odysseus··on DeskHop – Fast Desktop Switching
What if you want to switch ONE monitor, for example a 5K Apple Studio Display, between a Mac Mini and a MacBook?

Does a reliable solution exist that includes all accessories built in/attached to the monitor? (Ethernet, monitor speakers, monitor camera, power delivery charging, etc.)

Thanks, didn't know about the curl behavior. Nice!

This looks like https://tldr.sh in a browser.
odysseus··on Hush – Noiseless Browsing for Safari
I like Hush for Safari, but I also use Brave. Brave blocks cookie banners by default:

That first query is fantastic. Aside from the obvious wedding photos which were indeed aesthetically pleasing, my wife and I were laughing to the point of tears over a "most aesthetic" photo it found of me climbing through a cage suspended between two cliffs in the Alps.

Thanks for the cool tool! I too wish Apple exposed these scores as a filter at the GUI level, but after seeing the output, perhaps I know why they don't.

odysseus··on Web Scraping via JavaScript Runtime Heap Snapshots (2022)
Did you ever make another blog post about how to choose properties working backward from the visible data on the web page to the data structure containing said data?

Searching the heap manually is not working very well. The data I want is in a (very) long list of irrelevant values within a "strings" key. It might have something to do with the data on the page that I want to scrape being rendered by JavaScript.

odysseus··on Amazon duped millions of consumers into enrolling in Prime, US FTC says
The one-click purchase is a real problem. It's way too easy to accidentally one-tap subscribe to Amazon Music Unlimited for example.

You then instantly get charged $8.99 + tax and have to spend 15 minutes on the phone talking to 3 different Amazon agents in different countries trying to get a refund which when finally granted, will come 5 days later.

odysseus··on A Tale of Unwanted Disruption: My Week Without Amazon
I wonder if Eufy allows you to turn that off.

My doorbell is completely silent and I like it that way. The only reason I’d use such a feature is to scare away a package thief if nobody was home.

odysseus··on Ask Wirecutter: Can you recommend a not-smart TV for me?
Thanks for this, I will stay away from any Google TV sets for my next purchase.

odysseus··on Launch HN: Electric Air (YC W23) – Heat pump sold directly to homeowners
I have a heat pump. It works well, especially for air conditioning. I only have 3 complaints:

* Fan is noisy (but at least that noise is confined to the outside)

* During ice storms, it ices up and I have to jam a stick through the grate to knock off the ice around the components inside. (or the fan doesn't spin)

* Natural gas furnace backup (that comes when temps dip below freezing) heats the house considerably faster than the heat pump

odysseus··on Let's build a Chrome extension that steals as much data as possible
Fortunately, you can override Apple's choice:

Settings > Appearance > Scroll bar behavior > Show scroll bars > Always

If I were in charge of fixing this bug for Chromium, I might start by prioritizing which permissions are the most nefarious, list them first, perhaps in red. Then ensure the entire dialog expands vertically to fit as much content as possible.

Moom also has this snap to edge feature, and allows quite a few other window manipulation tricks too.
odysseus··on Bing: “I will not harm you unless you harm me first”
The Bissell has an knobbly attachment that kind of "scrubs" the carpet to get embedded pet hair out of the fibers. It doesn't get everything, but a regular vacuum doesn't either.
odysseus··on Bing: “I will not harm you unless you harm me first”
From the article:

> "It said that the cons of the “Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Handheld Vacuum” included a “short cord length of 16 feet”, when that vacuum has no cord at all—and that “it’s noisy enough to scare pets” when online reviews note that it’s really quiet."

Bissell makes more than one of these vacuums with the same name. One of them has a cord, the other doesn't. This can be confirmed with a 5 second Amazon search.

I own a Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Handheld Vacuum (Amazon ASIN B001EYFQ28), the corded model, and it's definitely noisy.

odysseus··on An investigation into Apple’s new Relay network
If you don't open the email, and don't have the preview pane on, how would the image get downloaded either way?

If you do open the email, and the spammer maps, say, snotrockets@example.com to a unique AD-SRE21234.JPG filename and that image within the email is displayed, no matter if it goes through Apple's relay or not, wouldn't the spammer then be able to validate your address is both valid and actively opening spam mail at whatever time you opened it?

odysseus··on An investigation into Apple’s new Relay network
Can’t spammers still learn if you opened the mail by using unique per-recipient image file names?
odysseus··on Best and worst decisions I’ve made
Take a metal teaspoon, scrape your tongue, and sniff it.
odysseus··on Best and worst decisions I’ve made
This is exactly right. If you really want to brush after eating acidic foods, at the very least swish generously with water first. Ideally, use a pre-brushing rinse that restores your mouth's pH balance.
odysseus··on Best and worst decisions I’ve made
One of my dentists had a little embroidered sign on the wall:

"Floss only the teeth you want to keep."

My main motivation for flossing aside from fresher breath is it dramatically makes the next dental visit easier. Meaning, way less bloody and painful. But my dentist says only about 30% of patients floss regularly.

odysseus··on Best and worst decisions I’ve made
Some toothbrushes (Colgate 360 for example) come with built in tongue scrubbers.

I prefer the softer brushes made in Switzerland. Too many toothbrushes make it too easy to wear down your enamel and gums.

odysseus··on Show HN: YouTube Summaries Using GPT
Cool project and great presentation, but do you have any plans for a Safari extension?

Apple has supported Chrome extension porting for at least 1 year now, and a conversion tool is built into Xcode: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/safariservices/saf...

------------

For videos less than 1 hour in length, I prefer https://youtubetranscript.com , then scroll to about 1/2 - 3/4 way through the transcript where youtubers generally hide their nuggets of info.

Eightify does seem better suited for long Lex Fridman/etc. type content though.

odysseus··on Digitec Galaxus now displays warranty score and return rate
I'd like to see Amazon do similar and make this data available publicly on each product's page.

Some return rate data is currently figured into "Amazon's Choice" labeling - for example, low return rate on an established product, more likely to be labeled Amazon's Choice.

But I'd like to see if Amazon has the guts to just make it all public.

odysseus··on Apple HomePod 2nd Generation
Ah, mine forgot about it after excitedly trying twice.

Other possible "solutions" I read about that aren't as good as what you're currently doing:

- Keep Hey Siri on, but create custom shortcuts to automatically respond with your preferred admonishment for things you don't want them asking over and over again

- Keep Hey Siri on, but set HomePod volume to 0

(By the way, thanks for mentioning HN Notify in your profile. Had no idea that existed. Now I'm using it.)

odysseus··on Apple HomePod 2nd Generation
Why does Apple:

* Allow you to set white noise / background sounds for sleeping

* But -doesn't- allow you to turn off the glowing light on the top of the HomePod while playing those background sounds (in a pitch dark room while you're trying to sleep)

odysseus··on Apple HomePod 2nd Generation
I also had #3 happen many times, but my wife just laughs at Siri being dumb and is usually just thankful /somebody/ stopped that timer or turned down that music.
odysseus··on Apple HomePod 2nd Generation
How old were your children when they figured out they could control Siri? One of my kids tried it once but Siri couldn't recognize the voice and refused to respond.
