I really don't understand how people still think it is Sweeny's ideology playing here, when he literally emailed Apple for an exception for Epic alone.
But if you get home and the papers are on the table as he mentioned, that is past the point of talking with your spouse about your relationship, it is the time to get out, think straight and then head to a lawyer to make sure all is done right.
(coming from someone that has been divorced for 5 years and am in good terms with my ex-wife, we help each other all the time and talk about things/life regularly as friends)
I sincerely don't understand the idea of people working more than what they are paid for. If my capabilities are worth 10k/month and you only pay me 5k/month (state of the economy, CoL adjustment, being a scrappy startup, whatever the reason), you will get half of my capabilities and I will spend the other 4 hours doing/thinking about something else or just online browsing HN.
Not trying to be snarky, but people that know that are underpaid and still give the companies 'their best', what is the rationale?
from CDC:
CDC estimates that the burden of illness during the 2018–2019 season included an estimated 35.5 million people getting sick with influenza, 16.5 million people going to a health care provider for their illness, 490,600 hospitalizations, and 34,200 deaths from influenza (Table 1)
Now, I am not saying that covid is just the flu, but 34k deaths in 2018 from the flu. Does this number also justify having flu shot mandates/passports? Or is it only if it is 340k deaths? 3.4 million deaths? 3k deaths is enough? I heard at a time some people saying 'if it saves only one life, it is worth it' so I wonder how much they will also do for all these other deaths.
Or to go to a restaurant and prove you have a flu vaccine?
Or tuberculosis exam as it also spreads via the air from an infected person?
What about if you haven't been able to get the vaccine (like my girlfriend which she is stuck in a fucking bureaucratic limbo due to most public services not working due to.. well guess what, COVID lockdowns) and not being able to be part of everyday life?
And I really dislike the 'well we have mandatory things already, so why not this also?' way of thinking. If now to enter a restaurant we required a rectal exam, it should be ok right? you already have a driving license so we should be able to ask anything else based on that alone
I would quit if this was mandated on me. My country already has vaccine 'passports' for certain activities, and while I am fully vaccinated and support vaccines in general, I fully oppose vaccine mandates/passports and refuse to do any activity that requires it. I guess if in the future to go to the supermarket to buy food I might show my passport as the alternative is to starve, I am 100% against this and will as much as I can, remove myself from civilisation if this the path we move towards to.
(ps: also no FB, IG, twitter, bla bla blah before someone says X or Y are tracking me already)
The thing is, a lot more people are like my gf than me (I grew up middle-upper class and am 'financially' well upper class for my country).
I did it for about 3 months like this, with maybe, maybe a 30-45 minute spar session per week (and at this time, I was doing 3 trainings a day during week, 2 on saturdays).
Had my first fight around the 3-4 month mark and won it without much difficulty.
I see this now that I am learning padel tennis. Been playing for a year or so, but I hardly do any games, mainly practise/drills with my coach (4 times a week). Maybe 2 games a month. I started in September not even knowing how to play, to surpass most people in my trainings, since the drills make me play in games as I practise, since it was drilled so much, while 95%+ of the people do one movement in practise, then get to a game and change it all, reduce speed, or just hit it wrong because they end up 'practising' more the matches with wrong technique/no correction, vs the folks that repeat the same movement 1000 times with correction. In a few months I may even get my beginners coaching certificate.
As Bruce Lee said: “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.
Here is the thing, you probably not doing something wrong. As long it isn't a everyday thing, it isn't so bad as people make it to be. The 'tap' to stop, then talking with him/her works, worked on me when I was a kid, probably the only thing that did to be honest. The 'physical violence' was the awakening call, then the conversation after that grounded it.
ps: if you just slap the living crap of him, say he is bad, and send him to his room without talking with him, then sure, that is an absolutely shitty behaviour, but I don't think this is what you are doing from your text.
The thing is, when people/self help gurus/whatnot talk about money not bringing happiness and job satisfaction and whatnot, they are using that against you (general you). What is paid enough anyway? If I have 5 kids, and you have none, it will probably be different. Or if your hobby is race cars and for me walking in the park? And the most important is, more money = safer future. If you exclude the FAANGs, most people are underpaid (in the sense of being enough to be happy and safe for the future) and the 75K and money doesn't equal happiness is used against them. It is nothing but owners/managers trying to get the most of the person for the least they can pay (why is taboo to talk about salaries? or you are asked sometimes to not speak of the bonus you got, etc?)
Just assume if a company is trying to 'convince' you for less money (even if you are asking for 500k and they want to offer you 450k 'only) by saying they are good company, teamwork, etc etc, just be sure, 99% of the time the owner/manager wants those 50k for his own bank account/benefit. If money didn't matter, the owners would be super happy to give their profits in forms of higher wages to the employees.
That is why 'my needs taken care of' issue comes up to me. Yes, 100% of the jobs I worked paid me enough to have a decent life, but if I got fired and couldn't find a job, I would be on the street after a few months. That is why the 75K USD or whatever it was in the book saying it didn't improve happiness is bollocks. You might not starve in SF with 75K, but I assure you an extra 20k would make you much happier, even if not for the peace of mind that you could save it for a rainy day.
If we talk about UBI or millionaires, sure, money stops being a concern, but I also don't see a lot of millionaires going over job boards trying to find a job that gives them a sense of accomplishment. They are doing their own things to achieve that happiness, and I doubt is working for someone else (some exceptions of course)
Money, no-one shows for work (well almost no-one) if they don't get paid. Everyone I know doesn't give a fuck about a sense of accomplishment. If the choice is 'work for X and get a sense of accomplishment or get 3X without it'. (If I remember correctly) The book's research while valid, leaves out a lot of counter research and selective selects some data over other.
Unless you are curing cancer, give me more money. Want to motivate me? put a 100k bonus at the end of the year. I don't give a fuck about teamwork or to feel accomplished. Money makes the world go around, and that is why I show up for work.
(and again, not saying it affected the price, Ronaldo actually dissed Coke by saying 'Water', while Pogba did it mostly because of his faith, which carries a different weight)
And even so, how can you say it works 99% of the time if you have to go and research each piece of peripheral that you want to use? Normal users go to bestbuy or amazon or whatnot and buy a microphone, they don't want to go and see if it works on ubuntu or whatnot or have weird behaviours at home. you can blame manufacturs for not supporting linux while they support win/mac, but again, normal users experience just isn't that great.
You said you are running linux for you and your relatives. Who installed it on your relatives machines? Who checked the compatibility of each hardware and maybe even bought some replacement things to work on linux? I know most users/relative I know wouldn't go to websites to try to find out if this or that works well with this and that. They just want to go to a shop, buy a laptop+accessories and plug them in when they get home
And lets not even go over the ux disaster that is the mix and match of uis from various apps.
My father probably watches 3/4 hours a day of various sports on tv (my gf's father is even worse). They are the target of these interviews and media.
Can we just agree that HN/Reddit isn't really a representation of society in general. Specially a slightly older population that isn't all in with the new fashions of the internet.
Without the media coverage of the games, of his life and everything around, Ronaldo wouldn't have 1/1000th of the followers in social media. Pick a sport that isn't heavily broadcasted, and you can find a once in a lifetime star that will probably still be working a side job to make ends meet. It was actually the advent of live sports on tv that made sports go from 'oh it is a nice living' to 'best well played job in the world'. The current attitude of a lot of players (not all) is 'hey I got mine already so fuck the ones that come after' and do nothing to help. (Ronaldo has 289 million followers, Bernardo Silva has 2.1 million, other good players have probably less (sorry, I really only remember those two players from the national team, I searched current best goalkeeper in the world, gave me Oblak, with 1.5 million followers). because the media don't focus so much on them, not giving them the opportunity to get those followers)
You can say all that you want about working 4 hours on friday night with uber, but here is the thing, Uber has 100% full control over if you will or not work with them. You have 0 control. Bad ratings? Too many drivers? You come from some nationality that is known for 'bad driving' (pick whatever the fuck you want as an excuse). They have 100% the power. You have zero. If they say: 'if even one person gives you less than 5 stars, you are out of here' and you have no recourse whatsoever.
This is what we as a society want to prevent. This unilateral power dynamic. I'm european. I have seen good unions, amazing unions, and very shitty ones. I'm not 100% pro-union, but I believe that there should be mechanisms to protect the ones with no leverage, because if we don't, the less fortunate will just be modern day slaves to big corporations, only the name will be different.
