odshoifsdhfs··on Rowan Atkinson: Visual Comedy (1992) [video]
I watched Raw a few times, and it is good, but I much prefer Eddie Izzard for example. I watched both decades ago (sometimes re watch them) and I can only remember one joke from Raw (where he makes fun of Bill Cosby), while Izzard's routines live in my head to the point I can recite them without hints.

There are amazing America and British stand up comics, I'm a bit out of the game recently, but oldish (80s and 90s) stuff from both sides of the pound were amazing (I loved Bill Cosby and Woody Allen stand up records for example but never had a chance to see them on tv as there were no recordings (one of Cosby I watched actually, and think audio only was better)

odshoifsdhfs··on In defence of garlic in a jar
I use normal bulbs of garlic as it was as I learned to cook (my country grows and uses garlic a lot) but I had no problems using 'pre prepared' garlic when I lived in other countries, BUT I would recommend everyone that does so to make sure it is sourced ethically (seems most peeled garlic in America comes from china, which doesn't have a good track record: https://www.ft.com/content/1416a056-833b-11e7-94e2-c5b903247... )
odshoifsdhfs··on Ask HN: How do I stop being used?
I would recommend reading: https://www.amazon.com/No-More-Mr-Nice-Guy/dp/0762415339

You can ignore the women part, but the author touches on some of the reasons people act like you act and how to change.

odshoifsdhfs··on Ask HN: Company is asking for unplanned interview stage? Should I accept it?
This was remote (been remote for close to 10 years) so not like I'm in the Bay Area or something (I'm 10000km from it). Yes, I do have a long experience but still, In 20 years I never seen more than 5 (except Spotify as I mentioned) so was just trying to offer an opposing view to yours.

edit: At the company I am leaving, currently the process is:

- After initial email, first call with CEO to assess match, culture, etc - Interview with me for an hour. We do 2 small coding challenges (your own editor, you chose the language, get information before hand, etc).

If 2nd interview goes well, we put an offer, if it doesn't, we give an option of them doing a small take home (4h max, but we hope no-one does more than 2h) if they want to continue with the process. If this goes well, offer, if it doesn't, we may have another call to let them 'explain' their code and solutions. At this point, is either an offer or a no.

Yes, technically it can be 4 interviews, but they are mostly to give more 'opportunities' to folks that may not be as good in a type of interview vs another type.

odshoifsdhfs··on Ask HN: Company is asking for unplanned interview stage? Should I accept it?
Just went through interviewing:

Sent two emails focused on the area I wanted to work:

Company A: - Email the next day to schedule first call - 15 minutes hr talk (mostly if salary, way of work, etc aligned) - 60 minutes vp of engineering (my experience, challenges the company is facing, talk shop) - 30 minutes with cto (they selling me on their company) - Offer after 2 hours of ending the chat with the cto.

All this in the span of 4 days (could have been faster but time conflicts)

Company B: - Email same day to schedule call - 15 call with recruiter (salary, expectations, etc) - 1:30 call with tech lead + someone else I forgot (talk about my experience, shop, and included a quick simple 20 minute coding challenge) - Offer the next day

Span of a week and a half since there were some holidays involved.

In 20+ years of being a developer, I only once had more than 3 interviews to get a job (Spotify almost a decade ago). Some are quick one hour chats, one was just having lunch with the CEO and CTO for an hour and chatting, Had 1-2 that were coding challenges and then 30 minutes chat.

I would never ever work for a company that required 5-8 interviews. Jesus christ

odshoifsdhfs··on Apple Unveils M2
One thing that came to mind, which may be relevant to you or not, do you have the Whatsapp desktop client installed/running? A few months ago, an update seems to have screwed up something that made my Mac much slower and unresponsive when it was open (my gf and my ex had the same issues with WA, the moment they closed WA it was snappy again).
odshoifsdhfs··on Apple Unveils M2
I have an M1 pro (16gb) and don't have this issues. Might be worth checking your system/taking it to Apple for a check.

Only time I got any similar issues were when I was hitting the ram pretty hard, but MUCH better than my i9 32 Gb with the same problem on memory (FUCK YOU DOCKER!)

odshoifsdhfs··on Tesla customer gets new Model 3 with cracks
I don't know where you are from, but here (country in Europe) no-one does that. If they buy it new, pretty sure most things are covered by warranty and even small user fault issues brands tend to fix.

I bought a 120k Porsche and didn't go and get it inspected. If I had any kind of problem with the car, I would just call ahead to secure a time slot and they would look over it/try to fix it. Once they diassembled the entire back seat system because of a rattling issue. Found out it was a metal ball from my kid's toy that went through the seatbelt hole and got under the seat. Took them a few hours to do so. Cost? zero. They replaced small parts for free also. Needed a bit of oil? not even a call, just stop by the shop and someone would do it in 10 minutes.

The fact that are documented cases, over and over again of bad QC on Tesla, and they refuse to fix it or tell the buyer of a brand new car it will take months to fix because they don't have the parts is just shitty behaviour, which I understand may fly in the USA, but in Europe they are running into troubles (already are with marketing issues re auto pilot and even Musk 'get back into the office' memos and shit)

odshoifsdhfs··on Is big tech’s red-hot jobs market about to cool?
Wasn't this started because before journalists started losing their jobs, they were telling blue collar unemployed workers to learn to code? So people turn that against them.
odshoifsdhfs··on What would a recession mean for developers?
This is the problem with this interviews and FANGs shit. They separate nothing. But because ppl in these companies did this doing interviews, and they have such a fucking high opinnion of themselves, they think the only good people are the ones that are like them. `I can do this and I'm the greatest (their own opinion reinforced by other idiots in the company) so anyone that can't aren't worthy of my time/welcomed here`.

But then you work with these idiots that can reverse a linked list in other companies and they can't organize code to save their lives. They use patterns and shit they used in facebook everywhere, even when they shouldn't because they always so smart and right.

(yes, after cleaning up code for shitty ex facebookers and ex netflixers, my opinion of the 'wheat' boils down to they may be wheat, but they infested with parasites and bugs and rotten at the core, but hey, what do I know, just been doing sw development for 25+ years, published author and worked on stuff that most here use daily, I'm just chaf because I don't want to work for FANGs)

odshoifsdhfs··on Agile and the long crisis of software

odshoifsdhfs··on The bottom is dropping out of Netflix
Doesn’t apple still allow you to buy movies on their service? I only bought two (the iron giant and the bucket list) but i am pretty sure iron giant i bought close to 15 years ago. I can still download it from their service without any problems(just went to the tv app on my phone to confirm and just started to download them right now)
odshoifsdhfs··on ISPs can’t find any judges who will block California net neutrality law
Yes, but the problem is on the ISP side. For example, lets assume a building with 10 apartments has guaranteed 100Mbit connection to the building.

If ISP was honest, they would sell 10Mbit connection to each apartment. What they do (at least here) is sell 100Mbit to each apartment and hope their usage isn't all at the same time since it can't support it.

I ended up paying more for a 200mbit connection straight to my apartment because of this. I was on a 500mbit connection before when working from home, then lockdowns started and everyone started to work from home and during work hours, if I would get 10-20mbit I would be happy. They sold me 500 but never had that capacity, so they 'blame' netflix and not them selling only what they can (like gyms, they sell over capacity and if for some reason all show up, they are screwed)

odshoifsdhfs··on Global population is crashing, soaring and moving
Yes, governments are accomplices in this, and yes, as I mentioned, we want cheap shit and turn a blind eye.

But we have laws like minimum wage, hours of work per week, social security contributions, health and safety etc. I don't care if it is a white or a black or a green man from mars that does a job, but I want him or her to have the protections we establish by law. The only reason there is these 'imports' of low skilled poor people is because business men know they can get around these laws and exploit them since most of them don't know better.

Wether is abiding by the law makes a business go out of business, then so be it. You may disagree with the minimum wage, the safety laws, and I encourage anyone to vote in accordance to that, but as soon as they are laws, either a business can work following them, or should not exist. We don't go and say 'well, loansharks can only exist by breaking some kneecaps, otherwise the business model wouldnt work' and let them do it.

And I am pissed because I saw these things first hand many times. Even called the respective government entities to expose the situation, and nothing was ever done, because as you said, governments benefit from this also.

For example (and I saw this happening more than once), minimum wage here is around 700 euros. Of this, the employee pays 70 to social security getting net 630 (minimum wage doesn't pay taxes basically). The employer has to pay around 200 euros on 'extras' to social security and other things. So it costs around 900 euros. I saw foreigners that didn't know better saying they wanted to get 500 at the end of the month. Employer paid them in cash 500 at the end of the month illegally, no contributions to social security or unemployment. Working more than 40 hours per week and id something happens to employee, he is fucked, and for this privilege, the owner saves 400 euros per month. So no, I don't want even more open borders to allow more and more exploitation.

edit: just today this comes up https://ionline.sapo.pt/artigo/769046/escravatura-de-200-mol...

200 moldovians in slave conditions, a quote: > When asked why he continued to work like this, the Moldovan migrant explained that his boss did not give him money because he withheld it and deducted it to Social Security to guarantee European citizenship.

odshoifsdhfs··on Global population is crashing, soaring and moving
There is a difference between elites and just about anyone.

The lack of labour to 'clean' or wait tables is not because locals don't want to do it. Is because locals don't want to do it in the exploitive conditions they have to work. Raise the conditions/pay and they will want to do it. 'Poor' immigrants take those jobs because it is better than what they have back home, but we shouldn't aim to exploit immigrants to keep our cheap shit.

Pretty much all over europe fruit picking companies/owners exploit this. No-one in their right mind want to work for less than minimum wage, temporary contracts, 12hour days under the sun skirting any kind of health and safety laws. So they go and pick poorer people from other countries where it is a step up from where they are from. Think the covid lockdowns proved pretty much that. In my country, owners complain they don't have people to work in turism/service industry and beg beg beg government for more open borders. And of course no-one wants to. Unpaid work hours, salaries paid under the table so owners don't pay employment taxes on that. No labour security because 'who needs a contract'. So now we have a bunch of pakistani people (nothing against them), that hardly speak the language working in shitty conditions, because owners don't want to pay the required legally mandated salaries + work conditions.

I am far in the income ladder compared to 'these jobs', but I want the people working them to have a decent standard of living, higher salaries and better work conditions, but that will never work if we keep exploiting 'poor' immigrants with open door policies.

odshoifsdhfs··on Global population is crashing, soaring and moving
No we don’t. We need controlled and ‘value added’ migration. Shall I point to Swedens current events to show what non controlled migration does to a country where the cultures are not compatible?(with similar examples having happening in various european countries)
odshoifsdhfs··on Young women earn more than young men in several U.S. cities
So you are ok that Ukranian women atm to also not be able to leave the country and have to fight? Because there are also a lot of consequences for being a man that just keep being ignored (famous Hillary Clinton's quote that the real victims of war are the widows of the fallen soldiers springs to mind)
odshoifsdhfs··on 37% of jobs in the United States can be performed entirely at home
Maybe try a more 'team' oriented sport? I have found padel tennis to be probably one of the most 'socializing' sports I have played (too much even for my tastes). The fact you have to play in pairs forces you to interact with someone, and is rare the game where a beer after to talk about it doesn't happen. (unless it is a weird hours).

I made also good social circles playing tennis and doing bjj, even though those are more 'individual' things, they seem to include a part of a social element to it as well.

Never tried dancing, but the times I did bouldering and crossfit, unless you were going in a group with already a beer planned after, they tend to be more start-end kind of things.

odshoifsdhfs··on What I learned during my three days offline
I grew up before internet, but was an early adopter. I don't have a bad relationship with my phone/devices, but I am interested, when you say 'without internet', what do you mean?

For example: WhatsApp, Messenger, iMessage, Netflix, a lot of cable services (I just changed providers, their tv service now runs over wifi to the router with no option for a physical cable to connect to your tv) that now run on the 'internet'. You mean if you are not working, you don't interact with any of these services?

odshoifsdhfs··on Study: Effectiveness of Apple's app tracking transparency
> I know some of these tracking APIs send data to third parties directly, but if that was banned all this traffic would just be re-routed through the app developer's back end so it would just sweep the problem under the carpet.

I quit a job over this. I don't remember exactly which service it was we were using (mixpanel maybe?) and we found out some users where blocking access to service servers (either at router level or something else). The solution? make a proxy api endpoint that would just re-route the calls to the service.

I beg and begged, saying 'look, these are users that specifically blocked 'service', lets respect that and get our data from the users that haven't' (this was before the Apple privacy changes a couple years ago). I was steamrolled because they knew better than users. I handed my notice the moment the ticket landed in the board.

odshoifsdhfs··on You have two jobs (2017)
Yes. A million times yes.

I have talked about this before here, but I don't really understand this idea companies have about promoting/demanding social things at work, or having a dedicated 1:1 block with managers. Are developers so social awkward that you need to have someone higher up blocking time for you to talk with people/managers?

Whenever I have an issue with my work/company I just do a 'hey, when do you have 5 minutes, need to have a chat about something' message and then talk with the manager/person about it. These 5 minutes chats have been as small as 'want to spend some time with my kid so will take a couple long weekends' to 'i am not a good fit for this company, so I will be resigning by end of day'. Never had to have it scheduled like I am a fucking 5 year old that needs an adult to time box his life.

Isn't this because British people see class a bit differently? Like you can win the lottery but don't consider yourself upper class because you weren't born in the right family/attended the right schools/whatever? Same as you can be down to your last penny, but you are from the Duke's family or whatnot and still consider yourself upper class?

That is the point. 'Have a vaccine or be fired' is the same.

Sure, it isn't 'forced' as in, we will tie you up and someone will give you the vaccine, (same as have sex with me or be fired, technically I won't force myself on you) but basically amounts to the same. And taking in account that a) there are vaccine side effects (I had them and know a few others that also did) b) they don't really help with the spread, just reducing the symptoms, it shouldn't be the business deciding on it.

odshoifsdhfs··on How to pick a good monitor for software development
I have one like that, and having a MBP retina driving it below it, I can't not notice the pixels on the 4k monitor. I wish we could have more options either 24@4K or 27@5K. Having a retina display next to it makes the differences quite apparent.

I'm your boss, either have sex with me or be fired.

You aren't forced, there are a lot of other jobs that don't require you to have sex with the boss.

You ok with this? Don't have an abortion or you will be fired. Don't have a kid or you will be fired. It is always a choice right?

odshoifsdhfs··on How the World Went from Post-Politics to Hyper-Politics
So, first, I used [1] this which show 2304 in uk vs 2002 in France. I don't have an account so I can't check sources, but find the difference between your dataset and mine for France quite significant and not sure which one to trust. (this difference has nothing to do with your reply, just find it strange)

So, based on your data: Country | total deaths | population (mm) | % death France: | 125,269 | 67.06 | 0.186% UK: | 157,194 | 66.83 | 0.235%

I don't care so much about the % higher when we are dealing with these kinds of numbers. Is the same as 'eating red meat increases your changes of colon cancer by 10%!!!!` and then you see it increased it from 0.01% to 0.011% (or something like that).

For me, you can find a million explanations for that small difference in the numbers, and I doubt it can be attributed to UK's government handling of the situation.

odshoifsdhfs··on How the World Went from Post-Politics to Hyper-Politics
So, you take easter european states (half of eu), and choose Belgium and Italy with 'caveats' to make the UK look bad. I think this is exactly what the gp was talking about.

I just checked, the deaths per million, the difference in the UK and France is of 0.03% (yes, 0.03%, basically 300 more people/million died in the UK than France).

ps: not even British, but hate selective cherry picking.
