oditogre··on Some Dark Patterns Now Illegal in UK
Yup, same as WalMart, hehe. They're awful and evil and rahrahrah, but at 1am on Sunday when everywhere else is closed, they'll sell you a loaf of bread, electric drill, computer monitor, a case of beer, and new underwear, and they'll do it at a lower price than any other store in town. So people hate it, but they still go there.

People pay for Reddit Gold. I don't see why they wouldn't pay for an @reddit.com email address, too.

Wow, wish I had it that easy as a kid. Everybody I ever played with drew in the gallows to begin with, so you just had 6 misses (2x leg, 2x arm, body, head) before you lost.
oditogre··on A Neuroscientist Uncovers A Dark Secret
Interesting, but as the article says, it's a young field. Far too young to draw any meaningful conclusions, but...certainly interesting.

oditogre··on Anybody have any recommends for PCAnywhere-type services?
I control one endpoint (the 'server' / computer being connected to), and to some reasonable extent, can dictate how the other end is setup. To the extent that it matters to me, both approaches solve the same problem, that is, I need to allow somebody to use a computer here in BFE while they are in a different part of country as if they were sitting right here. I want whatever works best, preferably free or cheap; I don't care if it's web-based, VNC-based, or RDP-based. I'm comfortable working with any of those - _I'm only wondering if there is a shiny bit of software, of any of those types, hiding somewhere out there that I haven't heard of, which other people have found to be particularly nice to use_.

At any rate...this post isn't really getting me anywhere. :P Outside of copilot, nobody has even said a specific piece of software to use (except one for mac, which isn't terribly useful).

oditogre··on Anybody have any recommends for PCAnywhere-type services?
You could be right; I'm just asking for people's personal, specific preferences (e.g., exactly which VNC?). There's far too many different options out there to try them all, so I was hoping to get some names that people have found they like.
oditogre··on Free & Proprietary
Exactly. The way I see it, you can think of a piece of code sort of like chain links. GPL code looks like this: http://ace.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pACE2-988564dt... AND it requires that ever piece 'below' it on the chain also look like that. Open source, BSD-licensed code also looks like that, but allows later links to be closed as well.

The upside to GPL is that any link N has the same rights to use and modify N-1 as 2 had on 1, with the downside being that N has limited rights on itself. BSD grants maximum control to each link, with the downside being that any given link may choose not to allow any links to be added below it.

oditogre··on Socialbrowse: Y Combinator Startup is Twitter For Links
>2 Receive real time updates of cool links shared by people you like

How do you handle a link that gets sent to the same person by two people? What about a link that you yourself sent? Can it be 'sent back' by somebody that you follow, that doesn't follow you (i.e., they don't know that you've already seen it)? I'm kind of thinking of situations where, i.e., person 1 'watches' person 2, 2 watches 3, 3 watches 1, and a, b, c, ... z watch 1, 2 and 3, and it makes me think of that 'Bedlam DL3' story Larry Osterman wrote about a while ago (http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2004/04/08/109626.aspx).

I mean, won't this cause a lot of duplicate / unnecessary traffic through the server and possibly to clients? Or are you doing it in some other way than how I'm thinking?

oditogre··on Is your startup something other than a web app?
>This industry is loaded with cash, they're transitioning from traditional analog video to IP-centric solutions and have no expertise.

I can confirm on this one. It's amazing how much money I've seen shelled out for utter crap surveillance / software combined systems, where the individual components are relatively inexpensive commodity stuff; the majority of the price is for simply having a passable bit of software that ties it together in a way that is useful from a surveillance standpoint.

oditogre··on Is your startup something other than a web app?
3% in games would be worth a metric buttload of money, where the difference in 'playable on N Ghz CPU' and 'playable on N - 0.2 Ghz CPU' could double your potential buyers.
oditogre··on Ask YC: How many hours do you sleep on average ?
Varies by how long I've been awake. 5 - 6 hours on weeknights. 8 - 9 on weekends (but the entire 'day' - from time I woke up on Friday to time I wake up on Saturday, for instance - will be longer than 24hrs total). I can get by on 4 or 9, but usually less than 5 for 2 days in a row or more than 9 under any conditions and I feel like hell all day. When I have extended periods (more than 5 or 6 days) where I have no particular reason to get up at a certain time, I fall into a sleeping pattern essentially the same as the '28 hour day / 6 day week'. My sleeping habits have been about the same since puberty, and my mom's are about the same as mine (my dad sleeps about 9hrs a night).

>Aaaaand wtf is with the creepy pics of young girls looking into the camera all over the site?

That was my initial reaction, too. Unless there's a specific reason you're trying to target teen girls and no one else, you might mix it up a bit.

Handy, thanks.
oditogre··on Arc's Out
Edit: Ontopic: "So while Arc is not the perfect Lisp, it seems to be better for at least some kinds of programming than either of the leading alternatives." What kinds did you have in mind?

Offtopic, but what exactly is that a picture of? I see chairs, and a face in the background (looks like a reflection) - is it a picture taken through a window? Why is it there?

oditogre··on Ask YC: tendonitis at a startup?
I love the MS 'Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000'. It feels a bit goofy at first, but it's really nice once you get used to it (There's this riser thing that goes on the front, so it puts your hands in a position where they fall down from the wrist instead of angling up). I work IT for a small city government, and the dispatchers in the police department -love- them. Hit up newegg (or your preferred hardware seller) and search for fa6-00010. The included mouse isn't too bad either.

Another recommendation that may sound stupid but is actually great: get a gamer mousepad...one of those gigantic ones with a nice wrist rest. I use a Razer eXactMat, and I love it. The bigger mousepad makes it much easier to get in the habit of mousing with your arm, not your wrist.

oditogre··on #lisp in ten easy pieces
Pretty standard etiquette for just about any irc room with a specific topic and a fairly steady, longstanding group of regulars, really. Still probably justified in being posted though, since people new to IRC regularly break that etiquette. :(
oditogre··on How to Write Funny
I dunno. I don't think this guy has seen enough xkcd comics. Most easily meet the 'bizarre' requirement. Quite a few, especially the ones with a 'love' theme are cruel and / or naughty. They often involve 'in-jokes' that you'd have to be a bit computer culture / scientifically inclined to get (either in the comic itself or the tooltip) that qualify as clever, and nearly all of them are clever in the sense presenting a common experience / situation of fans of the comic and presenting it in a way that all will find funny.
oditogre··on On Comet, Paul Graham, and YC rejection
Handy app. Much more convenient than java clients. '/list' is pretty ugly, tho. :) Didn't test much beyond that and joining a chan to chat for a sec.
oditogre··on New: Best Comments (via "Lists" Link at Bottom)
Handy.

'Recent' is used in a pretty loose way, though. Looks like anything in the last month is counted.

Pretty funny. I don't think anything will ever top the simple 'printer on fire', though.

oditogre··on Discover New Music - MMOG Written In Django
FF 2.0.0.10 and IE 7 (fully patched) both gave the error on a fully patched WinXP SP2 system, so I'm guessing it's a flash problem. I'm not at work atm so I can't check the specifics on the flash being used there, but it's whatever's the latest because I had to download it to use your site. :)
oditogre··on Is Software Too Soft?
This is so true - you see this kind of thing constantly where somebody has inadvertently changed the way something looks and are suddenly lost. I think one of the defining characteristics of a good IT guy is knowing a bunch of different ways to do the same thing on the software their organization uses (be it the OS or the word processor or whatever).
oditogre··on Discover New Music - MMOG Written In Django
>You can purchase DRM-free songs by clicking "buy" on select players.

Can you expand on that a bit? What do you mean by 'players' - like, WinAmp / WMP / etc. or like other members of the site? I use Amazon's music store, so that's kind of interesting to me.

\*Edit: I intermittently get "t61.flashplayer.init is not a function" error. It prevents me from listening to music. Any idea on what to do with that?

oditogre··on Lisp in a box - start quickly
I downloaded this a long time ago. I lost interest in lisp, but I keep it around at work and home because it makes a damn fine calculator, especially when you have a multi-step problem. You can just type it in in the order that you would say it out loud, whereas on a normal calculator (like calc.exe) you have to rearrange it to suit standard order of operations.
oditogre··on How do you prevent factions from taking control of a community-driven site?
Simple: Make it inconvenient. Require anybody who marks a post inappropriate to fill in a textbox explaining themselves.

Apply a basic 'stupid filter' to submissions (just to strip out submissions which are gibberish or vulgar) and make it clear to people that you will be filtering on those things.

Set a reasonable limit - 250 characters or something, so editors don't have to read essays on why a submission is inappropriate.

A little inconvenience goes a long way in shutting down site abusers. ;)
