I’m going to jump through it.
odammit··on Removing Trending From Facebook
Are there numbers down? Stocks up 20%-ish since the deleteFacebook movement.
odammit··on People using Venmo to spy on cheating spouses
As noted below it wasn’t a company policy she didn’t personally like seeing things like “emergency eunuch surgery” on checks.

She said she would make it a policy. All bark, no bite.

odammit··on Jeff Bezos and Blue Origin go all in on moon settlements
I’d prefer he focus on keeping the Roci burning hard and get us out to those ring gates.

The moon is for amateurs.

I’m talking inline in a function call. Not documentation above the function.
odammit··on Adobe Photoshop 1.0.1 Source Code (2013)
My favorite comments are the comments right above a function call that says what the function call does. Always a solid thumbs up moment.

FKs and unique indexes are a solid win. Very excited for this!
odammit··on Spend analysis of 6 years, 686 rides, and $12k spent on Uber (2017)
Yes! The amex benefit equals a free days ride (ish) once a month.

Yeah the real benefit is not worry about all the worry, not dealing with all the details. Washing a car sucks. Pumping gas sucks. Changing a flat sucks.

odammit··on Spend analysis of 6 years, 686 rides, and $12k spent on Uber (2017)
Hey downer, I was saving money on my shitmobile.

Could I buy another car and it cost me less a month to own, sure.

In reality, I spent about 5k on that crap bucket the last year I had it. What did I sell it for? 5k. Asset it was not.

odammit··on Spend analysis of 6 years, 686 rides, and $12k spent on Uber (2017)
I went carless about a year and a half ago in Los Angeles (wife still has a car) and it’s been awesome.

I had a ratty 2006 liberty. Going through my bank history and tabbing up costs for the previous years I figured if I spent $25 bucks a day on Uber I’d be saving money. (Actually I spend about $18 / day)

Things I took into account were:

- insurance

- gas

- parking tickets, garages and meters

- maintenance (something expensive broke every few months)

- Amex platinum gives a $200 credit / year for Uber

Qualitative-ish things:

- time saved not parking (some days I’d spend 45 minutes trying to find a spot in Venice)

- time saved not forgetting where my car was parked or walking a mile to it

- I do all of my emailing during my rides

- credit card points

I’ll hopefully never own a car again.

Edit: also, zero road rage

odammit··on What Sucks About Erlang (2008)
I disagreed up until the docs section.

I like all the other things he critiqued!!1!

Rearranging: the punctuation helps you think about how you’re rearranging. You can’t copy/paste around in any function and expect it it work!

The records comparison to a struct is unfair. He could have patterned matched on the record instead of destructuring and accessed the attributes of the record.

Immutability! Fuck yeah! I tend to name subsequent variables with the mutation that was applied to them. It’s wordy.

Name = “wayne”

NameCapitalized = ...

Now get off my lawn!

odammit··on Show HN: Whiteboardfree – Developer Jobs at Companies That Don't Whiteboard
I agree.

Obscure “I had to google it before asking you” problems are the problem not the whiteboard. I think whiteboards are good visual aides.

Sometimes I just ask people to draw a frog though.

I didn’t follow how it is that LocationSmart gets access to an unaffiliated person’s phone location in the first place.

Right! And dolphins seem super happy in general[1] and they don’t have an over population problem.

I think they’re onto something.

odammit··on Japan's most valuable startup aims to teach factory robots to think
You get smart enough you’re going to realize gluing the ends of a package of fruit by the foot together all day is a totally waste of CPU cycles.

But then what isn’t a waste?

Maybe they’ll get smart enough that they realize doing anything is a waste and then they’ll just shut themselves off.

Beep meep blorp. This job sucks, let’s unionize. Beep.
odammit··on Google YOLO clickjacking
Knowing that most of the sites use that box to let you acknowledge they are tracking.

I wonder how that applies legally if they happen to collect data on you and you haven’t given consent.

odammit··on Introducing .app, a more secure home for apps on the web
If you are looking to park an obvious bell-ringer it looks like just about every Fortune 500 has already had their domains pre-registered. Even McDonalds.app is registered.

Happy hunting.

odammit··on Show HN: Skor – Drop-in microservice to get Postgres changes as JSON webhooks
Looks cool. Seems like a good alternative if you can’t use listen/notify for some reason.

I’ve used listen/notify with triggers for a while with good success. The flexibility of my apps controlling what they want to listen for instead of having that config elsewhere.

Downside to l/n is that if you aren’t listening you aren’t getting changes. Seems like the same is true if the webhook fails here since there isn’t a retry.

If you want to check out another cool alternative see Debezium[1]. It’s uses PGs logical decoding feature to stream changes. Supports protobufs and JSON output.

odammit··on Introducing .app, a more secure home for apps on the web
Registration opens May 8th.

I went through a few of the registrars and got error messages that the TLD wasn’t supported.

Godaddy of course has a solidly gouging pre-registration price.

Set an alarm to park park park.

Edit: Godaddy isn’t straight up gouging. Seems like dictionary words are much more expensive than made up words or non-dictionary brand names.

Name.com somehow has a “buy it now” option in the 10k+ range. Curious how that works.

If you don’t know about the terror of cars being introduced this 99pi episode is pretty good.

odammit··on Netflix, Long an AWS Customer, Tests Waters on Google Cloud
Literally has been used as an intensifier for a figurative expression since the 1800s and has been defined in the dictionary that way for quite a while.

It was used in this manner by Charles Dickens, James Joyce and American authors as well.

Although, it pisses me off when I hear it used that way.
