occamrazor··on B.1.1.529
> That's quite a different claim to "it permanently reduces your body's ability to learn how to counter different parts of other versions of COVID".

Here the argument is that, when the antibodies “learned” from the vaccine have a low, but not nil, effectiveness, then the immune system of a vaccinated person would continue producing only the same antibodies. A person with natural immunity would instead be able to modulate the immune response and use the most effective among the many antibodies that they can produce.

> This is a very different argument that natural infection gives more effective immunity than vaccination, and the empirical evidence does not seem to agree.

There is some evidence that natural immunity lasts longer, although it is not settled yet.

occamrazor··on B.1.1.529
The basic argument is that if you are vaccinated, and then contract the virus, the immune system will only produce antibodies for the spike protein in the vaccine, and it will not “learn” how to attack other parts of the virus.

If a new variant has a spike protein different enough, then you will not be in a better situation than an individual with no vaccine and no previous contact with the virus.

In contrast, someone with natural immunity would have the ability to produce a wider range of antibodies that target many different parts of the virus, therefore many more variants would be vulnerable to at least some of the antibodies.

(Caveat: the immune system actually is more complex than that)

If compared to Buzzfeed or the Daily Mail, definitely not. If compared to more specialized academic publishers, yes.

Right now most of those pages are produced by much simpler models, which copy an existing page and replace text snippets with synonyms. I am sure that soon the spammers will switch to better models.

> androcentric

I suppose you mean _anthropocentric_ (or the anthropic principle).

The prefix andro- refers to men, in the sense of male (adult) humans; anthropo- instead to men in the sense of all humans.

occamrazor··on Image Super-Resolution via Iterative Refinement
But sometimes there is enough information, just in a format that isn’t easily useable. For example a low-res video of a car driving away: each frane is too blurry to recover the plate number, but all frames together have enough information.

I would expect DL models to perform wel on this task, but I could not find many results.

occamrazor··on China Bans Flightradar24
This is essentially the way it works in Switzerland. On motorways there are speed cameras every few kilometers: even with an app to warn you, it’s not worth trying to speed between cameras.

Might also be the value of the stolen property on the black market. There are unfortunately enough unscrupulous antiquities collectors, that one can estimate “market value” of Roman amphorae, jewelry, and other items.
occamrazor··on “Losses caused by or resulting from a Cyber Incident are not covered”
Finally I can use my niche industry knowledge to give insights! The push for exclusion of Cyber coverage comes from the reinsurance industry. Until -2020 reinsurers would cover Cyber claims within the same contracts covering property, theft, etc. Lately the attitude changed mostly for two reasons:

1. The total amount of claims is growing rapidly, in particular in connection with ransomware.

2. Re-insurers are concerned about potential accumulation losses, e.g. a vulnerability that causes many instances of theft or fraud.

Now Cyber risks must be covered and priced separately, so that insurers and reinsurers can quantify more accurately their exposure.

The specific clauses are very similar across insurers and closely mirror the corresponding exclusion on the reinsurance contracts.

occamrazor··on Oracle's JDK 17 – Free Again for Commercial Use
thanks, I fixed the terminology in my post
occamrazor··on Oracle's JDK 17 – Free Again for Commercial Use
I read it as after three years the Oracle JDK cannot be used any longer without a license, there is no option to continue using it in production without support.
occamrazor··on Oracle's JDK 17 – Free Again for Commercial Use
Still a shitty license:

> [For LTS Oracle JDK versions] security updates will be available for a total of three years. After that period, further use of the Oracle JDK in production requires a commercial license.

Apparently the business model is having commercial customers deploy Oracle JDK and suing them as soon as they forget to upgrade after three years.

occamrazor··on First Impressions with the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W
I wouldn't say so. RPi doesn't discontinue products, but it doesn't really make sense to buy most older models.

In practice there are 4 RPi's: the Zero (5$ is hard to beat), the Zero 2 W (small, cheap, with WiFi) and the 4 Model B.

Then there is the Pico, but it is a microcontroller, a completely different product, and the CM4, for large scale deployments.

Some years ago Google had the option to remove a website from search results. After a few months they discontinued. It would be nice to know why, if the user adoption was too low, the computational cost too high, or the user experience too bad because users inadvertently removed good results.

occamrazor··on Does low cholesterol cause cognitive impairment? Part II
From OP:

> [A]fter decades of research and billions of patient-years of use data, it doesn’t appear that people taking statins are at greater risk of these conditions [cognitive impairment, dementia, hemorrhagic stroke]. In fact, population studies actually suggest that statin use is associated with a reduced incidence of dementia, but observational studies like these are incapable of determining a cause-and-effect relationship.

In other words: no, it doesn’t. The article is however a good overview of cholesterol metabolism in the brain and effects of statins.
