occamrazor··on ChatGPT turned generative AI into an “anything tool”
There is still no computer program (with or without “AI”) able to play bridge decently.
occamrazor··on Cash payments above €3000 to be outlawed in Netherlands
Unregistered migrants cannot buy a car at all, because they can’t register it and get a plate (details differ between countries, but legal residence is a requirement everywhere in the EU). Registered migrants can get a bank account.

occamrazor··on 3M reaches $10.3B settlement over PFAS contamination of water systems
I didn’t remember correctly. PG&E had just above a billion tower. 21bn is the total capacity of the new California Wildfire Fund, that provides liability insurance to the California utilities.

occamrazor··on 3M reaches $10.3B settlement over PFAS contamination of water systems
PG&E had a 26b$ insurance tower IIRC. It was completely blown by the wildfires.
occamrazor··on Supreme Court Opinion on Student Loan Forgiveness [pdf]
The first three pages are a summary in relatively plain language.
occamrazor··on How the great firewall of China detects and blocks fully encrypted traffic [pdf]
Is the IMAP/SMTP connection not encrypted?
occamrazor··on Programming languages going above and beyond
TFA makes exactly this point. The lemma that Dafny proves is true, the reversed one is not and Dafny can provide the counterexample (the empty list).
occamrazor··on Fast machines, slow machines
Do you have CPU or memory heavy background tasks? On my M2 spotlight is instant and Notes opens in less than one second.
occamrazor··on Rivian embraces Tesla's charging standard for EVs
It doesn’t really matter. Nobody brings their car overseas, and the costs for having different chargers in Europe and NA are negligible.
occamrazor··on Adobe’s $20B deal to acquire Figma under threat from EU investigation
Adobe has a much larger reach in the target market. Under Adobe, Figma can potentially double or triple their sales, bringing that ratio to more reasonable levels.

(Of course Adobe’s ability to execute that is far from certain)

occamrazor··on Reforming the free software message
“Reciprocal licensing” is not precise. I think ShareAlike is more descriptive (and consistent with CC licenses).
occamrazor··on Tell HN: Google search sucks even more during Reddit blackout
Some years ago there was the option to remove a domain from search results (I don’t remember if it was a default or an option). Google removed it without giving a reason. I assume that it was not working as expected.

But the web has changed in these years. It would be interesting to have it again.

occamrazor··on Toward a more useful keyboard
Professional pianist practice hours every day. The main differences in posture, compared to an office chair, are:

1. A flat seat, without back

2. No wrist support.

occamrazor··on Amount of work that once bought an hour of light now buys 51 years of it (2017)
There is plenty of land, but not where most people want to live.

I have implemented a convolution (using radix-2 FFT) as an intermediate step in Bluestein FFT.

occamrazor··on Instant flood fill with HTML Canvas
The naive method is slow because it repaints the image several times. A faster way is a sort of double buffering: copy the image to an array, perform the fill on the array, copy the array to the canvas image data.

The method in TFA is however faster for static images, after the preprocessing.

occamrazor··on Google Colab will soon introduce AI coding features
An AI may be more likely to hallucinate the wrong comment, but also much less likely to forget to update the comment when the code changes. The net result could be better comments.
occamrazor··on New Philips Monitor Features an E-Paper Side Panel
That’s exactly how itvwas calculated. A0 is defined to have the right proportions, rounded to 1mm. The smaller formatsround always down, because this way it‘s possible to make two A(n*1) sheets by cutting an An sheet in two halves and possibly cutting away a thin stripe from the long side.
occamrazor··on Restaurant real estate gets a radical makeover
Do you tip for takeout (without delivery)?
occamrazor··on Dropbox to reduce global workforce by about 16%, or 500 staff
Dropbox can be at the same time the best solution and nevertheless hard to use, if the other solutions are less powerful or more confusing.
occamrazor··on Double Descent in Human Learning
It”s only mentioned at the end. If you use some regularization, you have many ways to fit the data (almost) perfectly, and you choose the one with the smallest coefficients, which is often one that generalizes well. And even without explicit regularization, some training methods implicitly apply sone form of regularization, when the number of parameters exceeds the number of data points.
occamrazor··on I worked at Google for -10 days
I know it’s common in Switzerland, Italy and France.
occamrazor··on The EU proposed CRA law may have unintended consequence for the Python ecosystem
It’s more than clickbait. The intent of the proposed legislation in not to make volunteer open-source contributors liable for bugs, but the current draft may set the boundary between commercial and non-commercial developers in the wrong place.
occamrazor··on I worked at Google for -10 days
