I'm a solo developer. My main income comes from ezInvoice.com so most of my work is keeping it up to date.

Aside from that my wife and I have a small 5 acre "farmette" in the Ozark Mountains in SW Missouri that we putter around on. We have two mini-burros, 3 dogs, 5 cats, around 30 chickens, thousands of acres of National forest and public land surrounding us, and a lot of wild critters that come visit us.

I have the basement to myself to design and build apps and tinker with things that peak my interest.

oblib··on Ask HN: What does your mother tell people about your work or employment?
My parents have both passed on but my mother never really believed me when I told her what I did for a living until I was almost 40 years old.

My first job was building custom cars with my father when I went to live with him when I was 14 years old. We worked on a lot of cars for movies and celebrities in Hollywood. My mother lived in Rockford, Il and, honestly, I didn't believe my father either until I moved there to live with him.

Years later when I was in my 30s I started learning how to program and my mother didn't believe I could ever do that until I started a business. And, to make even harder for her I was building web sites and ticketing software for entertainers in Branson, Mo.

She ended up moving here shortly after I did and got to meet a lot of them and she was like a teenage girl when she did, calling all her friends and telling them about it, and bragging about me. She was too cute. It was awesome to see her get so excited.

oblib··on I built a PWA and published it in 3 app stores heres what I learned
>>note taking or chat apps need several hundreds of megabytes of RAM to run.

I have a fairly big app and while I'm not sure how to measure that I ran "about:memory" in Firefox and added up everything I saw for the app and it came out to be about 30mb.

My Mac's Finder says the directory with all the code is 9.9 MB.

That app is plenty fast, even on my old late `09 Mac Mini Mac running 10.11.6 with just 4gb ram.

oblib··on I built a PWA and published it in 3 app stores heres what I learned
I thought this was an interesting overview of the process.

I was pondering about the current state of this and searching for independent "app stores" and there's no real independent outlet for real "web apps". So I did some searching for domain names for that and most of the obvious ones are taken, but there's no website.

oblib··on State is hard: why SPAs will persist
It made sense to me, though he maybe could have offered some clearer examples of SPAs and MPAs that are better suited to those approaches.
oblib··on Poll: How are you doing currently?
"Stopped watching the news"

I did this back in the early `80s when living in Los Angles. Back then I'd get off work, grab some fast food on the way home, and then turn on the TV News and watch it. The station I'd watch was, at the time, a model for today's "FOX News" and is now a FOX station. They had 3, 1/2 hour news programs back to back. The first 1/2 hour was local LA/Californa news, the 2nd was US news, the 3rd was World News.

In each of those shows they focused on murders, robberies, car crashes, etc. By the end of the 3rd show I'd be so depressed I felt like shit. Finally, one day, I realized I couldn't consume every awful thing they broadcast because, and more importantly, most all of it didn't effect me personally.

So I quit watching the "News", and it didn't take long at all before I was enjoying life again.

Nowadays I "monitor" the news as opposed to "consuming" it. I don't watch any News at all on TV. I watch selected videos on YouTube to get the gist of a story and when the opining starts I move on.

FWIW Daphne's sister Becky said “Dave was the biggest bright spot for Daphne” before her suicide.

oblib··on TodoMVC App Written in Vanilla JavaScript
I agree. In over 20 years I've never had a single user ask or complain about the size of the app. They have let me know when there was something not working right though.
oblib··on Ask HN: Does anyone use a Raspberry Pi as your main computer?
A few years ago I set up a Pi 4 8GB to have as a backup in case my old Mac Mini died. Last year the Mac's HD died and it got me through the few weeks it took me get the Mac back up and running.

One of our daughters moved in with us shortly after that so I moved the Pi to our family room and she's been using it since.

I used an "Argon" case that moves all the ports to rear of the case. It has a fan to cool it if it gets too heated up and I configured it to boot off an external SSD drive. That was pretty easy to do and makes a huge difference in how fast it boots up and loads apps.

I bumped up the processor speed a bit, it's not as fast as my old Mac and the tools not quite as polished but Geaney is a pretty good text editor for coding and FileZilla works fine to get and put files.

Aside from a web browser those are the tools I use most so the money and time spent on setting that up was well worth it and it's more than paid for itself.

oblib··on Ask HN: Why can't I host my own email?
That's what I use, but because I'm running on a DigitalOcean vps Microsoft still blocks me. I've not had any issues other than Microsoft though, Gmail was easy to get whitelisted.
oblib··on Sony reportedly plans to put ads in Playstation games
I'm not a gamer but if I paid for a Playstation that would piss me off.
oblib··on Ask HN: What do you guys think of Tarot or other metaphysical things?
Yeah... that's a good summation.

I have some personal experience with this kind of thing. Back in the `70s my father had a small group of "followers" who considered him to be a sort of "guru". We lived in Hollywood, so there were a lot of folks into that sort of thing.

They believed he had mystical powers. Truth was he was only looking to get laid, and he hurt a lot of women who fell for his BS, and their husbands/boyfriends.

I have a family member now who claims he's a "God". He lived in Hollywood too when he "realized" this. He's not quite as convincing as my father was, but he's pretty good at getting others to believe him.

oblib··on Ask HN: A Dumb Database?
I'll 2nd CouchDB for a server side solution, but you could also use PouchDB to store that data in the user's web browser. That wouldn't work when they access it with a different browser, but that may not be a bad thing, and could be useful.

oblib··on Ask HN: Should I get chickens?
>> If you do, the chickens will actively seek you out to hang out with you.

My daughter tends to the chickens here and they follow her and come running when they hear and see her. They adore her. It's pretty awesome to witness that.

oblib··on Ask HN: Should I get chickens?
I'll second the "Predators" here. I missed that in my comment but that is something they probably will experience, and it's a tough lesson for kids.

Snakes, raccoons, coyotes, bobcats, and hawks all visit us here and take their toll.

My daughter has grown up with "critters" and she still has a hard time loosing a chicken.

oblib··on Ask HN: Should I get chickens?
I have chickens, and I've had then on and off for a long time (close to 50 years now).

Chickens don't really attract rats, the food you feed them that does. So don't feed them more than they'll eat in a few hours and let them out to scratch in your yard.

I've seen chickens chase mice and swallow them whole. And they'd do the same with a small rat. And I mean the whole flock chasing them until it's caught and consumed.

Roosters can be an issue when you have neighbors close by. They'll crow all day and even in the middle of the night, and always at the crack of dawn. And they get "cocky". They grow spurs in a few years and they will use them on you, and your kids.

My advice is you buy a few hens, year olds are a good start. If you buy chicks make sure they're sexed and know you might still get a rooster.

And, yeah, the eggs are better than store bought, and often a lot better.

oblib··on What does “shitty job” mean in the low-skill, low-pay world?
This piece describes issues I experienced in my younger years. I started working when I was 14 years old learning to build custom cars. By the time I was 18 I was good at it because I paid close attention to the old timers I was learning from. From the very beginning I was paid a flat rate, and because I was good, and fast, I made a good wage, but the work was not full time.

When there was no work I'd take an hourly wage job. If the job was doing custom car or body work, because I was young I was told I had to prove I could do the work, and promised that if I did prove that I'd get a raise, but the raises never came, I got excuses instead.

In all of those cases the person I was working for made a lot of money off of my work, but just couldn't bring themselves to keep their promise of paying me what I was worth after I'd proved I could do the work.

Everyone of those cheapskates despised me for demanding they keep their word and pay me a journeyman's wage, and despised me for quitting.

I got real good at quitting. I'd wait until they bid a job to do custom metal work and took a down payment and then I'd demand they keep their word. But their greed was far more powerful than their sense of their situation. In two of those cases I later found out they were spending the money I was making them on cocaine. Looking back, I think there were probably others that did the same. I called those "the blizzard years" In most of them they went out of business because they took on a job they didn't have the skills to complete and/or snorted all the money.

oblib··on Ask HN: Have you created programs for only your personal use?
Thank you!

I really made it for myself, but I did set up a website last year (pugilis.com) and there is an older version there that I've made available for free. That version does not have the "MatchUps" feature though.

I'm really not a "marketing" guy but this week I started reaching out to some of the YouTube channels via email that cover boxing to see if any would want to partner with me to promote and sell the version with the analytics.

So far no one has got back to me. I think it's fair to say that boxing fans, as a group, may not be very tech savvy, and maybe even a bit intimidated by the idea of using an "app". And they may think my email is a scam. I put a link to the app in the email and they may be reluctant to click on it. Can't say I blame them if that's the case.

I think my next step is to make a video and put it on YouTube so they can see how it works and confirm it really is an app.

oblib··on Ask HN: Have you created programs for only your personal use?
I get more calls from users of my apps that have Comcast as the access provider than any other, and by far. The first thing I do when they have connection issues is check downdetector.com
oblib··on Ask HN: Have you created programs for only your personal use?
Sure... my most recent one is an app for the sport of Boxing. It's what I tinker on when I'm tired of coding on business software stuff.

It's getting to be a pretty cool too. It has a "Scorecard" and database for boxers, and I've taken my first (shallow) dive into "Sports Analytics" to predict a winner of an upcoming bout, and it's working pretty good too.

oblib··on Footprints in New Mexico raise questions when humans inhabited North America
I think it said they carbon dated samples in the same layer of soil to around 30,000 years ago, and they sure look like human footprints, and they found several of them, so that would likely be homo sapien.

But they've not claimed that yet. They're still studying what they have and looking for more clues.

oblib··on $625M worth of ETH drained on Axie Infinity's Ronin Network
I have not dug into the details of how this stuff works because every time I've looked for them what I found looked like bullshit. They all imply this stuff is so secure no one knows who's "money" it really is, and that's supposed to be a feature.

I'm still not regretting not buying into this stuff.

oblib··on CSS's !important was added because of laws about font size for some text
>> !important really was a mistake and should only be used to counteract other uses of !important you don't have control over.

That's mainly when I use it. Mostly to override colors Bootstrap CSS has defined with it.

For example a nav background color set in the Bootstrap file "/scss/mixins/_background-variant.scss":

.bg-light { background-color: #f8f9fa!important; }

By default I use that, but I also let users select a CSS file to override that with a color they chose from a list of "themes" I've made.

My themes only change a small bit of what Bootstrap CSS has described in their themes. It wouldn't make any sense for me to do anything more than that because it works works and it's easy for me to implement the change.

oblib··on CSS's !important was added because of laws about font size for some text
To honest, I don't have the time to become a CSS expert so I do what works and I don't worry much about it.

I use "!important" quite a bit because I let users made some choices in the color schemes of the app and using "!important" makes that easy for me to do.

"Space is really big"

And Time is really long, and what we don't know is still far greater than what we do know.

I agree it's not plausible within the scope of what we know.

oblib··on Using hamburger menus? Try sausage links (2019)
I'm mostly on my desktop PC and I didn't know those were called "sausage links", and never even heard that term before. I did notice that YouTube has them and it was at least a few months before I clicked on one of the links. It was several more months before I realized I could scroll them by clicking and dragging them and that was by accident when I moved my mouse while clicking on one.

I'm not a fan of them. I'd rather have and use a drop down menu. I think they're more intuitive and compact.

oblib··on Show HN: Covid – How long did you make it?
Sorry to hear about your father.

I agree we're letting our guard down far too soon and it looks like we'll will probably see another surge based on what's happening elsewhere around the world right now, and what we've already been through.

I live in a Deep Red county in rural Missouri. So far it's about 1 in 60 confirmed infected that die from it and around 220 that have died so far. Almost no one here wears masks and less than half are fully vaxxed and boosted.

They think they're "fighting for freedom" but they're really killing off their parents and grandparents. 220 dead so far.

oblib··on Famous Navy UFO video was camera glare, evidence suggests
That was pretty painful to watch with the fast forward going on for so long. I didn't try to take that in.

Seems to me like our gov's own investigation would've found gimbal glare to be the culprit if that were the case. But they didn't. What they said is:

"Of the 144 reports we are dealing with here, we have no clear indications that there is any non-terrestrial explanation for them — but we will go wherever the data takes us..."

And:

"We absolutely do believe what we're seeing are not simply sensor artifacts."

Sitting here knowing we have a helicopter and a land rover on Mars it doesn't feel like it's entirely impossible for an alien craft to be here, looking at us.

I can't make the leap to believe without doubt there is, or even to believe there probably is. But it is not impossible. We've already proved it's not, and we're not really all that smart.

oblib··on Famous Navy UFO video was camera glare, evidence suggests
Interesting how so many are willing to accept "camera flare" as a concrete explanation.

One thing that bothers me about this explanation is we know those pilots had a lot of experience with those systems so I'd expect they'd know "camera flare" when they saw it on those displays. But it's clear from the audio they did not recognize it as that. And there was more than one pilot seeing it, and from different angles.

I'd like to hear what the pilots and ship crew members think about this.
