oaththrowaway··on Neil Armstrong's customs form for moon rocks (2016)
Because the food was so bad and the women were so ugly that they had no choice to but leave
oaththrowaway··on What caused the 'baby boom'? What would it take to have another?
Ahh sorry, someone with your same username used to post on Hockey's Future message board
oaththrowaway··on What caused the 'baby boom'? What would it take to have another?
Hench from HF?
oaththrowaway··on Airbnb and Vrbo are going downhill like a hippo on a water slide
Quite the take. We do one of the units in our apartment building as an AirBnB. It makes a bit more per month than just renting would.

It is cleaned and inspected very thoroughly between guests. We wouldn't do it if we couldn't offer great service.

Certainly would never want to show up at check-in/check-out though, and it'd probably freak me out if someone did that at one we stayed at. It's not a hotel and it doesn't need to be treated as one.

oaththrowaway··on We’re secretly winning the war on cancer
Just went through the process recently...

Luckily Urgent Care was able to go from ultrasound to CT scan in 1 day. The long wait time has come from the insurance honestly.

Had to go to a different hospital because the original one I went to has to get an approval from United before getting it done (other hospital 2 blocks away doesn't have that same requirement??)

I got referred to a dedicated cancer center and then guess what, I have to call United and ask them to approve it - but I can't get an appointment to do that for 2 weeks.

Ended up doing all the legwork on my own and was able to get a consultation done within a week. Now I'm having to do biopsies, PET scan, ect. Depending on the result I might be able to get it removed next week!

But the pain has become so severe I can't eat, sleep, even lay down without extreme discomfort. I can't imagine waiting around on the insurance to walk me through it.

Funny enough, United sent us a letter in the mail asking if I really wanted to get that original CT scan! Like no, I'd rather not know I have a 7" tumor in my abdomen. Simply a joke of an industry

oaththrowaway··on Ask HN: What projects do you donate to?
Solid list there! I love Calibre and ScummVM. Is Scumm still under development though?
oaththrowaway··on 'Significant amount' of private data stolen in UK Legal Aid hack
Then you're going to have to start paying entry level IT like surgeons. Nobody is going to take that kind of risk for $30K.
oaththrowaway··on Nextcloud cries foul over Google Play Store app rejection
Oh I'm not on stock Android. I'm on lineage
oaththrowaway··on California sent residents' personal health data to LinkedIn
Why does a state have ad tracking data? Are they really that hard up for cash that they need to have ad campaigns for people selecting insurance?
oaththrowaway··on Nextcloud cries foul over Google Play Store app rejection
You can absolutely deny apps internet access. I do it for the Google Keyboard app.
oaththrowaway··on Ex-UK Special Forces break silence on 'war crimes' by colleagues
> "No Western government (or whatever you meant by government system) treats anyone like that, and such behaviour should absolutely surprise everyone."

Clearly not

oaththrowaway··on On Not Carrying a Camera – Cultivating memories instead of snapshots
I'll have to use that next time!
oaththrowaway··on On Not Carrying a Camera – Cultivating memories instead of snapshots
Ha,this could have been written by me as well. Aphantasia is so weird to try to describe to people.

I've never been great about taking photos, but my wife always remembers. Recently spent some time consolidating all of the to Immich and being able to see the "memories" every day is incredible.

oaththrowaway··on My experience of participating to a startup weekend competition in Italy
I went to a startup weekend maybe 9-10 years ago. It was a lot of fun. I didn't pick the best idea to work on, just the funnest sounding. Ended up with a small team (3 of us total) and we we're one of the only ones to actually have a good demo. I try to do some kind of hackfest every year now.

There is just something magical about working on something fun and pulling an all nighter.

oaththrowaway··on This 'College Protester' Isn't Real. It's an AI-Powered Undercover Bot for Cops
It's pretty common in fosscad (3D printed firearms subreddit), that people will get DMs from brand new accounts asking them to do illegal things. Cops/Feds are really doing the least possible to entrap people
oaththrowaway··on Use the Gemini API with OpenAI Fallback in TypeScript
It's really pretty reasonable. I don't notice it at all. Nothing as bad as trying to relay 1min.ai or something
oaththrowaway··on I won't connect my dishwasher to your cloud
What TV? I ended up getting a cheap Sceptre since it didn't have any smart nonsense. Not the greatest picture in the world but that's okay
oaththrowaway··on The Origin of the Pork Taboo
I've had both dogs and pigs as pets. Pigs are much smarter overall. They just have different behavior
oaththrowaway··on Fedora 42 Beta
I'm actually using a customized version of Universal Blue that Bazzite is also based on. Very slick setup
oaththrowaway··on Fedora 42 Beta
My biggest gripe with Wayland is screen sharing/remote desktop. For my desktop PC I could just install RealVNC and have access to it on any of my devices anywhere in the world. I still haven't found a good solution for Wayland. I'm using RDP right now but it really sucks in comparison so far.

Slack screen share is kind of hit and miss as well. Not to mention screen capture being less than ideal.

oaththrowaway··on Fedora 42 Beta
I floated between Mint and Pop_OS for years, and now I'll probably never leave Fedora Silverblue. It's awesome. I just use different toolbox/distrobox for different things I need.

Most of my dev work is in a Ubuntu distrobox and I use mostly Flatpaks for everything else.

oaththrowaway··on Tell Mozilla: it's time to ditch Google
Brave doesn't support multi-account containers.
oaththrowaway··on The DOJ still wants Google to sell off Chrome
Why is a company that relies on donations and Google to prop them up pay hundreds of thousands of dollars on that? That's not interesting to you at all?
oaththrowaway··on The DOJ still wants Google to sell off Chrome
That was fascinating. Thanks for posting that
oaththrowaway··on Introducing a terms of use and updated privacy notice for Firefox
Is there another browser that can do "container tabs" really the only thing that's keeping on Firefox now
oaththrowaway··on A $100 DIY muon tomographer
A treasure hunt? On Oak Island? Could it be...?
oaththrowaway··on Mexico issues legal threat to Google
Isn't it fairly common to have different things named differently depending on where you're at in the world?

I'm assuming that Google didn't change it for how it shows in Mexico, so why do they care so much about what another country calls it? It's stupid for it to be renamed, don't get me wrong, but the outrage about it seems like it's because it came from Trump.

oaththrowaway··on If you ever stacked cups in gym class, blame my dad
I remember we did this in my elementary school (also in Colorado), but I never bought a set. Didn't do anything for me
oaththrowaway··on Surnames from nicknames nobody has any more
My surname was originally -sen, and was changed to -son when they got to America due to a typo (according to my Grandma). Name came from Denmark
oaththrowaway··on Eggs US – Price – Chart
During the summer I was getting ~9-10 eggs a day, and we probably averaged eating 6 a day - so besides the size and taste, a big thing is that unwashed eggs last a long time.
