nuna··on Horns are growing on young people’s skulls. Phone use is to blame
the title is a bit sensationalist no?
nuna··on Ask HN: Tell me what you think a good job ad looks like
Senior seems to mean different things for different people

Are you looking for an expert in specifically X language/tech ?

Are you looking for someone with X years of development Experience?

Are you looking for a generalist?

Please clarify

nuna··on I’m 14, and I quit social media after discovering what was posted about me
I share most videos and pics to a family chat group but after reading this I went back and checked there were no embarrassing photos. Also just by posting, even to a private group, who knows if the images and videos are kept forever (whatsapp, instagram, snapchat)
nuna··on How to pass a programming interview (2016)
I don't do well on on the spot programming interviews. studying doesn't help. I can identify what needs to be done almost always, but implementing it in front of someone in only 40 mins? I need to practice that I guess. In the end as you said, I am constantly wondering what being able to regurgitate a memorized problem tells them about me (nothing) and why they don't care about my past experience, projects, successes and ratings. However, this is what every software interview is now
nuna··on Nearly Half of US Female Scientists Leave Full-Time Science After First Child
Interesting, whatever it is society has changed and we need to re-evaluate our culture, community and policies to accommodate

you definitely sound it... its not so much about having the same number as it is about providing the same opportunities. If new moms had the same support, be it from family members and their communities, they would be less likely to leave their positions.

Some things that would help in my opinion as a mother: affordable and accessible day care including back up care, at least 12 months maternity leave, flexible work arrangements (time and place), PTO (imagine both parents only have 2 weeks to spend with their kids outside of weekends), extended school and camp programs, affordability of all.

I went back to work when babe was 4 months. I have only 2 weeks PTO, there inst even a Christmas shut down, I have no family in the area, the daycare centers around me have 1 year waiting lists and are over $2500/month. I am underpaid. My work is flexible thankfully.

I don't blame women who quit.

nuna··on I interviewed at six top companies in Silicon Valley in six days
Thank you

mom here. same 2 kids, one a baby... they dont sleep man. I practice at night, about 1 hr before bed. Sometimes during lunch break at work. It takes much longer and its hard to remember all the algorithms. I hope to land a better job too. I am confident in my abilities and I've always been well liked and done great work, but I am not quite confident with interviews yet...
nuna··on Ask HN: What was the Internet like before corporations got their hands on it?
yup haha
nuna··on Ask HN: What was the Internet like before corporations got their hands on it?
I was maybe 9 or younger in the early 90s and I was very computer savvy (am in software now, surprise?) I knew how to log into chat rooms. My parents had no idea and it wasn't as dangerous as it was now. It was just a lot of people really excited to talk to each other. I may have been lucky.
nuna··on Ask HN: My team mate took credit for my work. What do I do
I version control everything, but my boss is not technical so this all seems like magic and you can make something simple a big deal easily.
nuna··on Ask HN: My team mate took credit for my work. What do I do
There wasn't collaboration other than plugging it into his code. It was not an oversight it was very clear he claimed to have written it all.You are correct though, partly my fault, why not mention it first myself, why wait for someone else to.
nuna··on Ask HN: My team mate took credit for my work. What do I do
Thank you your reply made me feel confident. I think it was an initial shock, I haven't had anything happen like this since university CS.
nuna··on California passes landmark data privacy bill
yes finally. A step in the right direction.

Recently I ordered shoes. My account on the company website listed my current address, the billing address was the same. When my shoes were sent they sent them to my old address... from 3 years ago. I logged back in and did not see my old address anywhere on my account however it is obvious they had it in their database and a glitch dispatched my shipment to this old address. What business did they have saving all my addresses? If I deleted it from my account online, why did they save it? I felt very unsettled about all the "deleted" data I had online

nuna··on US Births Dip to 30-yr Low; Fertility Rate Sinks Further Below Replacement Level
thanks for replying, the schools here are awful so I am looking at other places as options
nuna··on US Births Dip to 30-yr Low; Fertility Rate Sinks Further Below Replacement Level
where

have 2 and would consider having 3 if it wasnt for the horribly short maternity leave and cost of daycare. I just can't do the pump at work, wash bottles all night again. I also anticipate I wont make any savings for the next 1-2 years with the cost of child care. It sucks, it really really does.
nuna··on A female engineer's opinion on why there are fewer women in tech
Speaking not only as a Woman but as a Mother (Happy Mothers Day everyone) nothing would of persuade me away from STEM career. My parents were both in STEM and the love for science was as early as I can remember. HOWEVER on my most difficult days I feel like it is so hard because of the awfully short maternity leave, not enough vacation days to spend with family, no sick days to care for sick kids, 40 hour weeks when I can be done my work in 30 or less.

I dont feel negativity about interactions with other males in the industry. The bad interactions are usually from socially awkward individuals in general

nuna··on How to Know When a Child’s Flu Turns Serious
my elderly mother (70 yrs) who was visiting, came down with very bad flu symptoms. Having a newborn at home I took her to urgent care to get Tamiflu. They did the rapid test that came negative so they sent her off with nothing.

Considering her age, the fact that I had a newborn and that rapid testing has a high false negative rate, I was pretty upset that they didn't give her tamiflu as a precaution. Maybe reports that it was in low supply are true

nuna··on Fewer toys at once may help toddlers to focus better and play more creatively
we have a ton of toys, but they are always organized into containers and cupboards. toddler selects one to play with but can't move on to the next one until they clean up, usually this makes them just play longer with the selection. do you reall have to limit the amount of toys, or just the way you play?
nuna··on Books I read this year
thanks, that was it. I forget i have it most of the time
nuna··on Books I read this year
I cant see the list, just a banner with his picture. I am on Chrome
nuna··on Ask HN: If you could automate anything, what would you automate?
The lab. too much human error from temporary unmotivated young workers.
nuna··on Ask HN: What are your long-term goals?
I tend to agree
nuna··on [dead]
way waaayy over simplified
nuna··on NextDoor Says Users Who Share Posts with Reporters Could Be Kicked Off the Site
I like the app for the classifieds, and event posts and updates directly from the city and police department. However there are a lot of older generation posters that complain about everything and anything. Lately in my neighborhood the older generation have been outraged about the new recycling bins and rules. How dare they expect us to sort our own garbage! Actually they are outraged about any change...
nuna··on Star Trek is the richest and most positively impactful franchise of all time
I love everything Star Trek, I watched it with my sister as a child and I remember thinking, this is the future when I grow up. As an adult I have to say I am disappointed we haven't advanced much in space travel and mostly that people still don't get along (Earth citizens vs country). Theres still hope for the future! Live Long and Prosper
nuna··on Toys ‘R’ Us Plans Bankruptcy Filing Amid Debt Struggle
I bought a $80 item from a toy store this week, the price was the same as Amazon and I was glad not to deal with delivery, boxes and packaging. At another toy store i picked up a llama llama book, but it was $17 in store, and only $10 on Amazon. I didn't get the book. $7 is worth waiting and dealing with boxes
nuna··on In an 8-Hour Day, the Average Worker Is Productive for 2 Hours and 53 Minutes
