numo16··on New GitHub Explore Features
I've been kicking around the idea for a while of building a site that allows people to tag github repos, so other people can search for things like "javascript game engine" and come up with relevant results. Glad to see others may be looking for this.
numo16··on Google’s $179 Moto G puts every single cheap Android phone to shame
As a daily Windows Phone user, android user, and former iOS user, I'm curious to hear what apps you think are missing? I moved from my iPhone to Lumia and am only missing a google hangouts app (due to google choosing not to support the platform).
numo16··on Diet Drugs Work: Why Won’t Doctors Prescribe Them?
> "Why don't we teach effective nutrition and cooking in school?" We do. It's called home economics.

I don't know of many schools in my state that still have the budget to provide a home economics class/pay a teacher to teach it. The most my school went into nutrition was in the 1 semester of health class that everyone took.

Awesome! I will definitely be considering this
numo16··on BrewCrate is the perfect mix of tech & DIY - Homebrew by subscription
I guess it's time for me to upgrade to an all-grain setup. It would be nice if you could choose between all-grain or extract kits for your subscription, though.

numo16··on Please, keep paying $80 a month for cable so I can enjoy cheap TV
That's awful...I pay $85/month to Comcast in Flint for 50 up/10 down and I wish Google would move their ass with Google Fiber

numo16··on Should you use CoreData?
I moved from straight CoreData to ObjectiveRecord and haven't looked back. There are so many excellent solutions[0] out there that make CoreData much easier to use that I can't see much reason to using CoreData directly any more.

numo16··on Windows Phone nears 10% share in Europe
Agreed. Couple Xamarin with something like MVVMCross [1] and it's pretty easy to develop cross platform relatively quickly.

That's a bit odd...I know my Lumia picked up the date and time immediately upon finding a cell signal.
numo16··on Going to work from home today – our office is too loud
We have individual offices at my company and it is quite excellent coming from an open office/cube farm layout previously. Being able to just close the door and window blinds to signal you want to be left alone work and think is something every developer should be able to do.
numo16··on To my daughter's high school programming teacher
From what I understand (gf just finished her education degree, michigan secondary ed), there isn't really a teachers certification for computer programming/CS classes in secondary. It is generally taught by someone who shows interest in teaching it AND if there is an opening for the class in the schedule AND if there is a budget to allow that elective AND it doesn't get in the way of whatever the school's administration deems to be important. The state of it is quite sad really...I know at the high school I graduated from, there was a programming course that was taught by the typing teacher, at one point (was no longer available by the time I would have been able to take it).
numo16··on What's brewing? A K-Cup of Campbell's soup
> The k-cup machines seem like the thinnest premise for creating an ink-cartridge business model.

And this is why I moved to using a reusable k-cup at home (when I don't have the time/desire to make a full pot)

numo16··on What's brewing? A K-Cup of Campbell's soup
> Can you run a Keurig with no cup to use it to just heat water?

Yes, you can. In fact, I use my Keurig this way quite often for making tea (get cup of hot water from keurig, drop tea bag in cup) and have used it to make hot chocolate and cup-o-noodles several times in the same way.

> You're thinking of the CoolerMaster ripoffs

As in CoolerMaster knockoffs or the CM Storm QuickFire line? I've got a couple of the CM Storm QuickFire TK's (1 at work, 1 at home), and they have easily just as good, if not better, of a build quality and feel as the filco's or ducky's I've tried around the office, and definitely better than any of the blackwidows I've tried (old or new model).

numo16··on Windows 8 more widely used than OS X, IE still on the rise
My name is numo16 and I'm a Windows 8 and Mountain Lion user...
numo16··on Windows 8 more widely used than OS X, IE still on the rise
There actually is still a hierarchical tree in the start screen, it just defaults to your customizable pinned apps start screen. Right-click the start screen and hit the All Apps button in the lower corner for the traditional folder structure of the start menu (in smaller tile form, of course).
numo16··on Windows 8 more widely used than OS X, IE still on the rise
> Unfortunately it isn't discoverable

I think this may be one of the largest problems for people making the switch. After moving to Win8, a friend of mine enjoyed everything about the new OS except for one "missing" feature from Windows 7. He couldn't hit the windows key and type in the search box in the start menu to find programs he was looking for. After I told him you could still do exactly this, I realized that there is nothing on the start screen that really indicates that you are automatically search focused (people are used to a search box that they can focus on). Now that he knows about this he has no qualms, but I guess there are some undiscoverable features that some of us have taken for granted in win8 because we've actually read up on how to be a power user.

numo16··on Mutex Nintendo
The past few generations of Nintendo systems have been bought specifically for Legend of Zelda or Super Smash Bros. games (N64, Gamecube, Wii, DS, 3DS, and soon the WiiU for WW HD). I eventually branch out to other games for the system, but Zelda is generally my driving force
numo16··on A Real Keyboard for Programmers?
On windows I use Autohotkey [1] to remap keys (capslock to backspace, qwerty to colemak, etc...), no registry hacks required. You just have to remember to run the script on startup.

numo16··on The Startup T-Shirt Stereotype
This is what happens with the Appharbor t-shirt I won in a contest a while back. People ask what the logo means and I explain, if it's a developer I get a bit more in-depth in how awesome it is.

Also on Verizon iPhone. Received Tornado warning alert via iPhone Emergency Alert night we had 5 tornadoes...it was awesome!
