Second this - I immediately look for the financials because it is usually the first time they are being presented publicly

Cool project nonetheless!

nsx147··on Startups I Want to Fund
I’ve fantasized about the delivery to a person idea for a while. The next frontier after last mile - last foot. I figure drones will do it one day. Also sounds like something Amazon would do.
nsx147··on Ask HN: How to come up with monetizable side project ideas?
Very little retained value there. Short term
nsx147··on Ask HN: What methods and tools can I use to decrease my app churn?
I really like Amplitude
nsx147··on Amazon Sets Its Sights on the $88B Online Ad Market
> Typically people will buy amazon ads at breakeven or worse in order to gain sales rank to get more organic sales.

This is a very important point. I sell on Amazon and I run ads at break even profit to get more organic reviews and higher sales rank. Much more retained value compared to paid search engine ads in ecommerce

nsx147··on New Map Scale Is More Readable by People Who Are Color Blind
Ha! I enjoyed this read. I am also colorblind. I do think one of the more interesting parts of being colorblind is the fact that I do not rely on color for ANYTHING. For example - Stoplight? What position is lit is my first thought. I think this train of thought has had some unintended benefits in terms of my ability to process things analytically

nsx147··on Show HN: Brutal.js – a small framework for building brutalist web applications
Forgive my ignorance, but what is a brutalist web application?

Edit: I see - To me, brutalist means as close to the basic raw HTML/ JavaScript as possible.

nsx147··on Ask HN: What's your favorite way of getting a web app up quickly in 2018?
Yii2 with aws lightsail bitnami LAMP...mysql in the lightsail instance or RDS, nothing new or crazy but I know it and can get it done extremely quick.

If the webapp takes off, I can figure the rest out later.

nsx147··on Show HN: JQBX – Social Listening Web/Mobile App
This is awesome. I was a DJ back in the early 2000s using Shoutcast [0] to stream. A lot of issues with obtaining music and obviously streaming rights.

This is so easy to whip up your own station with a legit music source. Barrier to entry is much lower than having to figure out how to configure all of the software and connect to the actual stream server. The DJ software had some cool features like fade-in/fade-out, etc. but the music and the DJ's ability to speak to the audience were the important part. The chat element here could replace that. Something like this seems like it could be the next evolution in online radio.

Awesome work!

nsx147··on Apartment baiting with Facebook Ads
It's important to note here that this will only work in densely populated areas. Otherwise FB will make you expand your radius / criteria to fit a large enough population potentially rendering the ad useless.
nsx147··on How Mapbox Is Winning Over Developers to Challenge Google's Mapping Dominance
A bit tangential, but I have been unable to find a price-friendly static maps provider for embedding in PDF and print. Anyone have suggestions?

nsx147··on Trump orders Postal Service review after blasting Amazon deal
Short term bump in the road for Amazon. They will not need USPS in the long run anyway:

- Build out own network (AMZL, Amazon Flex)

- Buy UPS/Fedex/etc

- Drone delivery

It is unfortunate that AMZN is taking the fall for whatever this executive order is actually trying to accomplish.

nsx147··on Facebook Data Collected by Quiz App Included Private Messages
He accepted blame for quite a bit, and apologized (as he usually does)

The part I don't understand about all of this is that, yes somewhere along the line someone made the decision that giving developers access to that data was ok...but they REMOVED access to it as soon as they realized what sharing that data meant. That's how startups are trained to behave, shoot first ask questions later.

They made a mistake and corrected on their own, what more is there to ask? I guess it's more of an issue because of the nature of their business?

nsx147··on The Illusion of a Profitable Amazon Prime Now and Prime Fresh
Amazon Flex will eventually encompass more than just delivering goods. Delivering people (uber/lyft). Retrieving packages from households and shipping them, maybe even last mile delivery?

I feel like this article completely misses the point about the Amazon philosophy. It doesn't matter if Prime Now / Amazon Fresh are profitable. They aren't supposed to be profitable. They are building out the infrastructure of Amazon Flex for themselves AT COST and then they will open it up to other services and uses that will undercut any competitors (rideshare is the first one that comes to mind)

The focus here should be on Amazon Flex and how/where it is going, because that service will be the one that turns the actual profit. Just like AWS.

nsx147··on Elon Musk Deletes Own, SpaceX and Tesla Facebook Pages After #deletefacebook

nsx147··on Amazon's policies promote counterfeiting
I have sold on Amazon for about 3 years now, over 2000+ skus FBA. The items I sell are pretty easy to counterfeit (much easier than OPs). There have been plenty of sellers come in and undercut price and subsequently destroy my products ratings because customers received fakes.

I started moving my products into the Brand Registry and all of a sudden the counterfeit sellers started disappearing...and now they don't exist anymore. So at one point a few years ago I was on this guys side and was starting to write up cease & desists but I believe Amazon is getting better at it. Haven't seen any counterfeit sellers on my listings that last for more than 30 days in a while.

nsx147··on Snapchat petition attracts one million signatures
This is analogous to Facebook moving from individual walls to a newsfeed. Why did they move to newsfeed? Easily consumable ad units.

People WILL get used to it, and advertisers will soon have programmatic access to ads that will show in the Discover section. Whether or not they will add value to the advertisers with this format is the real question.

This change is no surprise to me, nor will they change it. Driven by the need for ad revenue [0]
