nsenifty··on A confession exposes India’s hacking industry
Indeed. Between roughly 1995-2000 it was the place to be. The hyper growth that followed post ~2002 brought in dilution in talent, benefits were cut (e.g. stock options were discontinued mid 2002) and the emergence of global companies opening India offices made it even less desirable.

There's a meme about Infosys' 3L/annum salary. Funnily that was exactly my starting salary there (post confirmation) in 2002.

The whole point was that most of the world was pro-nazi until the events of WW2 and the holocaust. And if you are comparing someone's views in the 30s to the current worldview, I hate to break it to you that everyone's racist and fascist, including Roosevelt, Churchill and MK Gandhi. Gandhi pretty much called for the Jews to offer themselves up to be butchered by Nazis and Arabs.

There is freedom of speech, but the first amendment[0] ironically added measures to restrict free speech. Even aside from that, it's a minefield of colonial era Sedition laws, blasphemy laws, anti-terrorism laws etc. The state can also make it pretty miserable for you even if you didn't break the laws just by arresting you and denying swift justice (since the court cases can take decades). You could also be "made to disappear" if you sufficiently piss off a powerful non-state entity. So yeah it's pretty bleak.

Ironically fearmongering that there's an imminent genocide is one of the justifications used by the the Government for internet shutdowns and censorship. Law and order is precarious in most parts of the country and anybody can spark an unrest by sparking rumors and it spreads like forest fire causing riots and loss of life.

> the current ruling party is straight up unironically fascist and descends from the same political party that inspired the german nationalist socialist party.

This is false. There is no link between the German Nazi party and BJP. If you are talking about RSS, the link comes from a quote in a book published in 1939 (well before the world found about the holocaust) by the RSS founder [0]. Admiration for Hitler and his Nazi party in the 30s wasn't unique to the RSS founder [1][2].

Golwalkar was also supportive of allies in their war against Nazis and supported the formation of Israel.

nsenifty··on Stanford just released a 386-page report on the state of AI
My middle school enrollment number was 286. The number was significant because it was etched/embroidered/painted all over my belongings. A few years later they renumbered us all. I was a bit disappointed losing this number until I saw my new number - 640!
nsenifty··on Launch HN: Inri (YC W23) – Wealthfront for Investing in India
That's great! You should add that to your FAQs (spell it out specifically).

How do you factor the US taxation at marginal rate (instead of the more favorable long term capital gain tax rate) factor into your ROI comparison between investing directly in India vs an US-based India fund (which enjoys all the tax benefits)?

nsenifty··on Launch HN: Inri (YC W23) – Wealthfront for Investing in India
Do you help US-based investors with PFIC taxation (see Steps 4 and 5 here)? (https://www.taxesforexpats.com/guides/passive-foreign-invest...).

This is a huge pain point for US persons investing in foreign mutual funds. This made me liquidate all my ETFs/mutual funds in India and move the money to individual stocks or property.

If you can make it easy for NRIs to invest in a basket of individual stocks, a NRI-friendly smallcase (https://www.smallcase.com/) if you will, that would be amazing.

nsenifty··on Launch HN: Inri (YC W23) – Wealthfront for Investing in India
If you are based in the US and directly invest in mutual funds in India, keep in mind the US taxes it in extremely unfavorable terms via PFIC[0]. I browsed through their website and it appears their tax guidance is only for Indian taxation, which is fair but something to keep in mind. If you have to deal with US taxes, I would highly avoid holding mutual funds abroad, and just buy US-based India-focused funds.

nsenifty··on An ancient Indian Buddhist monk buried in Athens
Industrial revolution was funded by the colonies, both in providing resources and the market for the finished goods. For instance, the British starved the local textile industry in Bengal (which had accounted to 30% of global textile market) by exporting the raw cotton back home and dumping the products in India.
nsenifty··on Indian opposition dealt major blow as parliament bars Congress leader Gandhi
Do you have any specific examples of cases being filed against them that the courts are not paying attention to? Courts job is not to police the population. If someone files a case and argues the merits of it, why wouldn't the courts pay attention?
nsenifty··on Indian opposition dealt major blow as parliament bars Congress leader Gandhi
He also said "if you look around you will find a lot more Modis [that are thieves]".

In case it isn't clear, he messed up by making derogatory statement based on someone's caste. He should have known better, especially as an elected representative. He is lucky "Modi" isn't classified as Scheduled Caste/Tribes, rather as "Other backward castes". The provisions of SC/ST act[0] are even more draconian (no anticipatory bail, higher mandatory minimum sentences).

Definitely politically motivated in this case and definitely need to fix the criminal defamation laws, but he needs to be treated the same way a common man would.

nsenifty··on WhatsApp would not remove end-to-end encryption for UK law, says chief
The above case was with FB messenger which is (was?) not e2e encrypted and since Meta already had the data they were obliged to comply with a court-issued warrant.

With E2EE, they can legally skirt such demands since they can claim they don't have the data so that's a win for them as well.

nsenifty··on Study finds mushrooms magnify memory by boosting nerve growth
This brand, along with most other US sourced products (including Paul Stamet's brand) contains more biomass (the grain substrate on which mushroom grows) than the mushroom itself. For instance, one of the FAQ on their site states it has 2g of starch per 2g serving!

I am looking for a good lion's mane supplement in the US too but I haven't found a good one yet.

nsenifty··on Costa Rica’s enigmatic addresses (2021)
This is true to a large extent in India. My childhood home address in a very small town was something like "person name, behind government hospital, town". Even in the cities, depending on the city, it is usually a combination of number and cross streets (e.g. #50, 5th Main, 6th cross). If you aren't familiar with the area, there are ten different 5th mains and it is always a bit of a crap shoot finding the right one.
nsenifty··on What I Learned at Stripe
Is this documented somewhere? As a data point, just a day after my last day at $FAANG, my blind required re-auth. I still have access to my older mid-size company blind via a separate account since 2019.

Just wondering what other services Blind now offers to employers.

nsenifty··on Seattle becomes first U.S. city to ban caste discrimination
I don't. I've seen this[1] passed around as an evidence to show a much lesser prevalence of caste-based discrimination, but I haven't myself examined this in depth.

[1] https://carnegieendowment.org/2021/06/09/social-realities-of... (search for "Experience With Discrimination")

> Muslims report the greatest degree of religious discrimination by far (39 percent), followed by Hindus (18 percent), Christians (15 percent), and believers of other faiths (9 percent). Sixteen percent of Indian Americans report being discriminated against by virtue of their Indian heritage. And, finally, 5 percent of all respondents report having encountered discrimination due to their caste identity.

nsenifty··on Seattle becomes first U.S. city to ban caste discrimination
Equality labs survey is anything but scientific. The participants were not carefully sampled. They say it was "community organized", which basically means it was a link that was propagated by activists to like-minded people to participate and pass the link on to. They don't explain their methodology in their report. See a rebuttal here [1]

Caste discrimination does exist, but not to the extent the report projects.

nsenifty··on Ask HN: Laid off folks, are you getting hired?
I was a Staff-level engineer that a BigCo@Bay area laid off in November. My network immediately went into overdrive connecting me with great opportunities, which I am VERY thankful for. Got in pipeline for 7 companies, interviewed for 4 roles, got 3 offers (two startups and one public company), declined the other 3 interviews and decided to take the public company offer.

> Caltrain even lets people drink on the train and its not a problem, but it's because of the crowd they serve.

Even Caltrain gets rowdy on the game days, particularly with people on the bike cars refusing to give way to bikers boarding/deboarding in the intermediate stops. While this only happens occasionally, it made me miss my stop enough times (in addition to lack of safety with last mile biking) to completely give up on Caltrain.

nsenifty··on Saying “sup” with `net send`
Same here. However we discovered that the windows service "messenger" had to be re-enabled on the target machine to make this work again. So we'd sneak into a gullible person's computer, log in (each one of us was an admin, yay!), run "net start messenger" and were back in action!
nsenifty··on Devpod: Remote development environment at Uber
I don't think it's been discussed externally yet. It's called on-demand (some references to it here - https://developers.facebook.com/blog/post/2022/11/15/meta-de...).
nsenifty··on Devpod: Remote development environment at Uber
Both VS Code and IntelliJ have first class support for remote development as referenced in the article. I have been using Github codespaces for a while now and you can't nearly tell you aren't developing locally. Add to that faster builds without your laptop sounding like a jet engine.

padding and margin go `top right bottom left` just like in a clock. So it always start at top and go clockwise. The two argument shortcut is just `top right` with bottom=top and left=right.

nsenifty··on Improving code review time
Ex-Facebooker here: Number of reviews does factor into performance reviews, but mostly as a tie-breaker in calibrations when you're borderline in between bands, not as a primary metric. People who do disproportionately large number of reviews do get recognized and rewarded.
