nphardon··on Ask HN: What Skills Are Important Today?
I'm wondering how this plays out in the interview process though, just a year or two ago it was still leetcode and hours upon hours of technical interview. Has that changed in the context of LLMs? If you were hiring, how would you go about it? Does knwoing python really matter anymore? In my shop it 100% does not, and I'm guessing that in the 75% of posts in Who's Hiring that are for Ai startups it also does not, just curious to find out if thats true.
nphardon··on Owners mourn spoiled food after firmware update bricks Samsung smart fridges
Can't wait for refrigerators to require 2FA.
nphardon··on I vibed a proof of Conway's conjecture
I would not be surprised if an LLM could have generated this conjecture, since it's such a natural extension of the integers, does it hold for surreal integers is not a big leap. It's totally predictable / probabilistic and thats what they do at a high level.

My read on the current sitch is that the drama is more around the humans behind the LLMs, like the OpenAi *people*, who are dishonest, thieving, technocrats, stealing human mathematicians work and claiming credit for it. Since the LLMs are only trained on finite amounts of data on the internet I don't think anyone expects them to replace mathematicians in a serious way. But surely the field is changing dramatically, people will adapt.

nphardon··on I vibed a proof of Conway's conjecture
My experience has been similar; I find ChatGPT to be much stronger and more precise at math and in communication. I also can not do better with a multiple agent flow than I can with a single agent.
nphardon··on Show HN: Hacker News, Without AI
This is the first attempt I've seen that seems to be working. I like that it's just a acting as a filter and the comment section is linked to the hackernews source. It's really satisfying to not see any Ai bs. I do like how hackernews is limited to 30 front page posts.
nphardon··on The Hugging Face incident and the road ahead
Bots trained on human behavior express proclivity for cheating? I'm shocked.
nphardon··on I were 17, I'd learn how to build LLMs from scratch
Same. But if I could go back, I would add skating as well. I slept on that one and spent too much time trying to be a hacker.
nphardon··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
I know surveillance is on par in the UK, but is the UK also building and populating massive detention centers where people are kept without due process*? Are they flooding the streets of liberal cities with soldiers*? Killing citizens on the streets of liberal states (Minnesota) out in the open? Has nationalism completely overtaken the government and citizenship? Has the opposition party been completely neutered? Does your leader openly break any laws of their choosing while plundering national coffers?

He's lucky they didn't ship him right off to the Dilley Detention Center

> Republicans might as well rename their party the Democratic Fascists of America at this point.

I'm reading Stefan Zweig right now, he was a prolific Jewish author from 1890s until his suicide in 1942, living as an exiled Jew from Austria in South America. He has written many words, over a century ago, that would support your claim.

...the sight of armed troops in *democratic* or *non-MAGA* cities
nphardon··on Omacom Foundation launches with $8M
Noob friendly, I believe was the implication. Perhaps an implication that on average, the young are more attracted to the surface level ui features that omarchy amplifies, and the easyness of the installation. For us older heads, we also got into linux quite young, but there were not options for easy install, so the install was an integral part of the process that forced you to somewhat deeply learn your machine inside and out, and for me at least, that became a huge part of the appeal. Anecdotally, when i did my first install off a red hat disc in 1995 at age 14, i could not figure out how to configure xwindows so i just gave up and spent 4 solid years in the terminal. This was a formative experience in my life, and one that I would have missed out on if i started with omarchy.
nphardon··on Every Model Cheats
More anthropomorphic obfuscation. Would the title "Models Don't Adhere to Prompts to a Tee" be more accurate? I deal with that all day while coding.
nphardon··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
loving my hybrid life; 2 days a week in office, working outdoors, 3 days at home.
nphardon··on The lattice of sets of natural numbers is rich (2021)
This was the answer I was looking for. You're reminding me that existence of infinity is an axiom, like parallel lines dont intersect. We can remove that axiom and get a new mathematical framework, but by their nature, axioms are not something to prove or disprove.
nphardon··on Every Fucking Website (2020)
A while back I realized that it was just the browser keeping me on screen when I didn't want to be. I switched to the purely native Safari app on my phone, from a highly customized ad blocking browser, with lots of content filtering. My screen time dropped from like 2 hours a day to like 10 minutes.
nphardon··on Understanding is the new bottleneck
In the end, LLMs create garbage code that no one understands, they break things that should not have been broken, that would not have been broken if it was done slowly with understanding along the way. To reframe it as "understanding is the bottleneck" is just more LLM salesmanship. LLMs have their limits and when you hit them you're stuck. LLMs are the bottleneck. But the idea that "LLMs are the answer to the problem created by LLMs" is absurd.
nphardon··on The lattice of sets of natural numbers is rich (2021)
If the universe contains a finite amount of information, would that disprove the existence of an infinite set? I.e. if the representation of a number contained more information than the amount of information available in the entire universe.
nphardon··on AI agents lie, cheat and steal. That is putting off users
Is it incorrect to anthropomorphize llm's?

nphardon··on Woman pulled over twice after Flock-linked software connected her to homicide
1) I love your argument, and I'm really impressed you were able to step up and do this. 2) It's wild that you, and everyone else, broadcast your name and address on live cam, while also arguing against the surveillance state.
nphardon··on Managing AI Coding Costs at Scale
good engineer + llm = good engineer.

nphardon··on This Mine Predicts Major Wars. It's Opening Again
If you look at antiwar.com, we seem to be in the throes of World War.
nphardon··on The title cards in Blade Runner are amazing
I'm not policing, I didn't flag it; but for the same reasons you mentioned it's an interesting transition to observe.

Also, when writers use llms to do their writing, it gets injected with these generic phrases that jump out to heavy llm users because theyre repeated so often. It's just kind of a weird phenomenon.

nphardon··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
I'm reading two books right now: Stefan Zweig's World of Yesterday and Ulrich Gutmair's First Days of Berlin. The similarities to the current state of US are eerie as hell.
nphardon··on The title cards in Blade Runner are amazing
There's a lot of em dashes in the article as well, along with some phrasing that is very LLM. I think this was written with a mix of LLM and human.
nphardon··on Show HN: Hacker News with reduced priority for AI driven content
Love this idea. I agree with the other comment that its not filtering well, but i hope you can get it dialed in.

Sometimes hackernews feels like the drive into SF. Just bombarded with Ai garbage billboards.
