Without AI, using AI to accomplish it's goal. And built using AI.

My friends we are in the future.

Just what I thought.

> made with <3 by Ayden

That's the cherry on the cake - indicating genuine effort and attention to detail put into something, yet not even checking the credit at the bottom.

Actually a pretty funny joke if intentional.

I am the dev, it was in fact intentional

I just love it.

Layered joke

So what. The unabomber used a phone sometimes

Can someone make a site to filter HN posts about apps that remove AI in HN?

Yeah unslop.news actually filters these out

this is about the 4th post I've seen today that's some variation of hacker news without AI. Maybe we need a site to aggregate these together, hn but only the hn without AI posts.

This is a filter for articles about AI, not articles written by AI. I'd actually use the latter. As for the "no AI here" badge, people will soon just put it up themselves. Like llms.txt: you add it, and nobody checks.

to certain people, it's all one-in-the-same. the real motivations behind this are a kind of existential human narcissism, a kind of denial-based coping mechanism grounded in a world-view that this industrial-revolution-scale change on society is somehow a passing phase.

touch grass

i suppose the correct retort would be to advise you to get your head out of it.

Submissions of articles written by AI should be flagged on the upstream HN, as should be comments written by AI.

Ngl it would be kinda fun for everyone to meme with each other on slop mode in slop threads

There you go :) https://hnslop.nilsherzig.com/

as an extension so you can continue to comment and use hn as usual

Almost no programming-related posts left after filtering. Nice!

It has filtered itself out!

"Show HN: Hacker News, Without AI" is front page on news.ycombinator.com, absent on unslop.news.

as it should lol

Yes please, take all the bleeding edge tech stories out of the aggregator I go to for bleeding edge tech stories.

Yes, bleeding edge tech story = tech story primarily focused on AI

I was unaware that technological progress stopped for everything but LLMs. All other types of technology have achieved their final forms. Wow.

Seriously though, every AI story feels the same lately. There's:

1. company wants or gets more compute 2. IPO 3. AI slop is bad 4. AI Company Executive says something batshit (often because IPO)

It's gotten pretty boring to read more than the headline for most of these. It doesn't feel bleeding edge so much as repetitive.

While I get what you are saying, from my perspective, there is no longer the same breadth of content on HN, with LLM related content taking up a significant portion of the top posts. Today is actually a pretty good day, with I think 7/30 being LLM related.

I just don't like having to dig through multiple pages of LLM posts to find other types of tech news. Even if I do read a few here or there, I can't filter them out to look for other stuff. There is other tech out there beyond AI.

I feel like simple tagging system for hn submissions would fix that. A couple of predefined tags - single submissions should have at least one tag. User can define list of tags they want to follow and that's it.

The majority of links about "AI" are not really interesting. "New model released, people who want to avoid thinking can now avoid 7% more thinking according to NoThink benchmark". The top comment: "look at the SVG of a pelican they overfit the model on this time".

If only we could put all new stories into a single feed and have some sort of mechanism to determine what the community considers interesting.

This "community" is clearly not a monolith.

“Tech stories” = Nth OpenAI/Anthropic press release or LLM-generated thought piece. Such enrichment, much learning.

To me this sounds very welcome. I'm continually scanning and skipping over any HN articles concerning A.I. and LLMs.

Having a site (or even a setting in HN) that does this for me is great!

I love this so much because I hide every "Look at me, I use LLMs and it makes my toast" stories.

Heh I was thinking for a while about a similar pet project but I would remove the political/mainstream news rage bait, especially the stuff that is more or less unrelated to technology. AI news are still tech news

Feel free to fork this then! https://github.com/leiDnedyA/hn-without-ai It uses an LLM to categorize posts as ai or not, so you can just use a different prompt to filter out whatever you don't want (e.g "Respond with only true or false. true if the following post content is primarily political and false otherwise)

I actually like the look of this, I especially like being able to set a serif font instead of whatever default is on https://news.ycombinator.com.

It would be funny if this was vibe coded.

hehe

It is

> Ironically, this project was built with AI coding and uses AI to filter out articles about AI. Go figure.

https://github.com/leiDnedyA/hn-without-ai

"Made with <3 by ..." Yea it is

I did this on purpose, I do not think AI would leave that in lol

yea fair, probably not

The upvote button seems to be broken or non-functional on unslop.news. I am running Windows 10 on a PC desktop with the latest version of MS Edge.

Adding this as an issue, will fix tonight! Edit: I'm realizing to get the upvotes to work I actually need an auth token for the user's HN account so it will have to be a redirect to the HN thread rather than a functional upvote button, but I am going to keep it to stick with the HN design

That's intentional. It's a design choice. Get with the programme.

Appreciate the thought; it's essential to keep us alive in engineering! It is understood; AI exist; that's not the only news :)

Does "without AI" mean without posts about AI, or without posts written by AI?

I think this is the former, but I want the latter.

I'm the creator, and it is the former. I will consider spending some money on one of the available "AI detector" APIs and making a similar site for the latter. My main problem with them, though, is that I don't think they work very well and even if they work now, I imagine they'd be perpetually behind the newest models

HN mostly depresses me these days, so I appreciate this! (nice to see vibe-coding put to good use for once)

Great project I was thinking about doing *exactly* the same. Do you mind sharing your stack?

Thanks! https://github.com/leiDnedyA/hn-without-ai

Is there any AI News site out there? Just AI related news and nothing else

There is a market for curated news about AI development in the world. I'd subscribe without hesitation

If so, please provide a link, thank you

Yes, it's called The Internet last time I checked.

https://news.ycombinator.com/

Someone could make a site that just computes the difference between hacker news and unslop news.

https://hcker.news/?ai=include

Id like to see news about AI, just not AI tooling or "show hn my new AI project". obviously that's not as trivial to filter.

This is the first attempt I've seen that seems to be working. I like that it's just a acting as a filter and the comment section is linked to the hackernews source. It's really satisfying to not see any Ai bs. I do like how hackernews is limited to 30 front page posts.

A few design bugs in the mobile layout (Chrome)

Ah I have been using safari for testing. Will add this as an issue and fix tonight!

That's right on the money name picking :D

It is espically god for AI researchers like me, is there any other resource, if you knowe would love to explore it

links at the top e.g. show redirect to the regular site, i presume they are supposed to go to a filtered version

ADS (AI derangement syndrome)

You mean AIDS?

This was written with AI, so there's no point here.

Currently there is an article about feeling sad w.r.t. AI on the front page. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49661506 That one is filtered out too. Surely nobody is going to claim that it is slop?

I mean, that post /is/ entirely about AI.

The "I love AI" posts are just as bad as the "I hate AI" posts, and the same "this is my opinion on AI" posts are as bad as the onslaught of poorly-AI-vibed demo posts. Makes sense to filter them all out IMO.

Agreed, but filtering still mostly works by people upvoting or flagging.

Sure, filter whatever fits your taste. But it's not slop, so "unslop.news" may not be the perfect name.

Time for only-AI hacker news

Current thread:

Ask HN: Can we please limit the AI news flood?

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49657850

On the front page:

Show HN: Hacker News, Without AI (unslop.news)
Hacker News with reduced priority for AI driven content (sprinklz.io)
Show HN: Hacker News, without AI (hcker.news)

Three anti AI HN things on the front page at the same time. Two with the same title. This is spam.

I think it's useful, and maybe an indication of something positive.

But have you heard of https://unslop.news? If you look at HN through that, the above AI-related spam disappears.

Or maybe it reflects a genuine desire from some subset of regular HN readers? Is it spam when three different articles about the latest Anthropic model make the front page? Or the latest Apple product release?

unslop.news IS slop btw: https://github.com/leiDnedyA/hn-without-ai

Huh... it's not even that hard of a problem to solve right? Maybe I'm insane, but I feel like this is easier to crank out in rails or something than sloppin' it. It's a singular page, with some filtering on one model + a job to add entries on a regular basis with an API call out to openanthrogemingptai.

We do get the the pinnicle of software quality though: parsing HTML with regex. https://github.com/leiDnedyA/hn-without-ai/blob/007e7b4a6df6...

lol it works though doesn't it?

Oh I'm just saying this would be faster to make with a framework and... traditional coding or whatever I'm told to call my job now.

If you're talking about parsing HTML with regex... buddy that IS the pinnacle of software quality. I'm sure... nay convinced, that HTML is fully parseable with regular expressions. We were just waiting for one very special boy to ask Claude for it, and today, the world hath received the fruits from a tree we planted long ago... thank you.

Kind of funny that currently the number 1 article is a Show HN for an AI vibe coded slop terminal program.

We get it, guys - you don't like reading news about AI, but can you just stop spamming submissions with this crap - "HN with no AI, built with AI", wtf is that? I feel like building: "HN for non-haters of AI", where every single motherfucker that even mentions anything remotely sounding like "a slop" would be just shadow-banned. And I'm not even excited about AI.

Why is it empty? /s
