I have coded things you people wouldn't believe...

notorandit··on Y Combinator urges the White House to support Europe's Digital Markets Act
Good luck. I fear it will be a waste of time and resources.
notorandit··on A 2FA app that tells you when you get `314159` (2024)
And not telling when you get 271828? Racist!
notorandit··on New Zealand's $16B health dept managed finances with single Excel spreadsheet
At page 42. Not a random number.
notorandit··on New Zealand's $16B health dept managed finances with single Excel spreadsheet
Interesting fact: Deloitte reports the use of the Excel file at page 42.

Where all of the answers go.

notorandit··on Gene-edited non-browning banana could cut food waste
To reduce food waste, maybe we could turn to local season-linked food.

If you live in NA, maybe pineapples, bananas and coconuts are not the best choice as they require special treatments to cope with transportation to reach your table. While maybe pears, apples and a number of berries would travel much less and require less treatments.

Done really want to waste research resources just for yellower bananas?

notorandit··on NIH.gov DNS servers down, making PubMed, BLAST, etc. unreachable
Elon?
notorandit··on Why Aren't We Losing Our Minds over the Plastic in Our Brains?
Maybe because plastics isn't conductive?
notorandit··on LibreOffice still kicking at 40, now with browser tricks and real-time collab
40 years? Staroffice arrived around 1998-1999 afaict. Seems like a marketing hoax.
notorandit··on What is the current monthly user count on Hacker News?
... or maybe you are an AI bot? Or a NS one?
notorandit··on What is the current monthly user count on Hacker News?
Anyway, visits != visitors.
notorandit··on What is the current monthly user count on Hacker News?
That's for the entire domain or just the "root"?
notorandit··on What is the current monthly user count on Hacker News?
Me and you. Thus at least two.
notorandit··on Doom running on Apple Lightning to HDMI dongle [video]
Doom is running by using the hardware (CPU, RAM and I/O) which is embedded into the HDMI dongle.

It is not using any of the computing resources of the Mac.

notorandit··on Doom running on Apple Lightning to HDMI dongle [video]
If I can run Doom on a dongle or on an Ikea wifi lamp, why cannot we get a portable computer in a smartwatch?

I suspect bloated complex operating systems won't make this happen.

notorandit··on Run Doom in/on an Apple HDMI dongle [video]
I'm think we are under using a lot of computers out there. Aren't we?
notorandit··on C is not suited to SIMD (2019)
C has been invented when CPUs, those few available, were just single cored and single threaded.

Wanna SMP? Use multi-thread libreries. Wanna SIMD/MIMD? Use (inline) assembler functions. Or design your own language.

notorandit··on Snowdrop OS – a homebrew operating system from scratch, in assembly language
Looks like menuetos, but 16 bit.
notorandit··on Chatassembler is a RISC-V assembler that's over 10 times faster than GCC
You run an assembler on w for each release. You run an optimized compiled binary all the time.

I for one mind the latter.

notorandit··on Right to root access
3GB RAM? 4G only? No, thanks.

And, btw, are you running Google Play services?

In this case, all of your efforts have been made useless.

notorandit··on Starship Flight 7
Launching a rocket is far more complex than shipping a release.

It is more like an "all or nothing" process.

notorandit··on Right to root access
Yes, they can. This is another reason for having closed source blobs running as root under Linux/Android to manage all communication.

You cannot fight for this, unless you design both the communication hardware and its firmware and you get away from Google Play.

notorandit··on Right to root access
Because there is none. Freedom is a game. Are you really free to bake your own bread? (Think about wheat, mills, water, salt, yeast, energy, oven...).

I simply point to the fact that you have no control. Just it's illusion.

Ask yourself, how can law enforcement push a software trojan into any mobile phone without physically touching it.

notorandit··on Starship Flight 7
This can get as far as the test plan is complete, multiply iterated under different interface conditions and thorough. And you are still relying upon the adherence of the simulated models to the physical reality.

Real tests do all of this at once with no option to escape reality.

Again, one thing is automating thorough software tests, another one is testing physical stuff.

notorandit··on Right to root access
Fair! But 0.000001% of the market is hardly a point.
notorandit··on Starship Flight 7
Running a code test doesn't require firing a rocket.

How would you test a rocket?

notorandit··on Right to root access
Yes, please! Unfortunately, your smartphone doesn't (really) belong to you. It's a shared property between the hardware maker, the low level software producer (Qualcomm or Apple), the os owner (Google or Apple) and maybe finally you.

Undocumented hardware plus closed source drivers for almost everything make all this possible.

notorandit··on Obvious things C should do
Integrated preprocessor. That was what I meant. Maybe with c-syntax awareness.
notorandit··on Obvious things C should do
I wish C had a jinja2-like preprocessor!
notorandit··on Why does storing 2FA codes in your password manager make sense?
You may say I am a dreamer, but I am not the only one!

Storing 2FA codes in your password manager is not a good idea at all in case you get it breached. Otherwise it could be a convenient idea.

If your password manager gets breached you could also loose control of your 2FA as it can be replaced as well.

We need to securely store our 2FA codes, sure. But I would advise not to use the "normal" password manager. I for use have them printed on paper.

notorandit··on Tell HN: John Friel my father, internet pioneer and creator of QModem, has died
The loss of a father is a big loss. This one in particular is like a world pillar just collapsed.
