notinty··on Ask HN: Why have we accepted the cookie pop-up situation across the web?
I actually like a lot of them, and they've improved a ton since the start in general.

I'm fine with measuring performance, and sometimes tailoring content, but prefer to opt-out of ad targeting and offline matching.

Most all of them are missing proper opt-outs that really should be there, however it's a good start.

Thinking about it, the one I have the most disdain for is The Guardian's; it has a quick UI but the accept-all button is labelled "Yes I'm Happy".

notinty··on Ask HN: Why were a few rank numbers black on the homepage?
There really aren't many buttons, we've just stopped seeing.

notinty··on Widespread exploitation of critical remote code execution in Apache Log4j
This kind of (mis)feature should only be available in the format string, which shouldn't have untrusted user input.
notinty··on Widespread exploitation of critical remote code execution in Apache Log4j
It's absurd but they are parsed from parameters as well.

Both Minecraft servers and clients are vulnerable to chat messages with them.

notinty··on Magnus Carlsen retains title after winning lopsided match
Rapid chess is almost a different game, shown by how handily Carlsen beat Caruana in the tie breakers.
notinty··on An underrated idea: the priority view
I can't even imagine the Imagination Quotient required for some social scores.
notinty··on A common mistake involving wildcards and the find command (2020)
It's alright, it was 2am afterall.
notinty··on Plan Ahead for Phase Out of 3G Cellular Networks and Service
This probably would have been more appropriate as an Ask HN.

Editorializing the headline like that is a no-go.

notinty··on An underrated idea: the priority view
Lots of people are getting hung up on the measurement.

The key word is "imagine" y'know.

notinty··on An underrated idea: the priority view
Yeah I had to reread it a few times, it's just a mistake.

Of course maybe the kid being more accessible to doctors might increase the doctors' utility, but that's not what he meant.

notinty··on Microsoft’s Halo Infinite Went from Disaster to Triumph
Read the username.

We can't be certain, as with most conspiracy theories, but there are regulations against it so there would be ramifications if/when it came to light.

notinty··on A molten salt storage solution using sodium hydroxide
Inter-seasonal heat storage is a thing, albeit rare.

notinty··on Chrome users beware: Manifest v3 is deceitful and threatening
Can you back this up?

Seems like a pretty clear case of being two-faced, and a small page laying out the details would be super helpful.

notinty··on Pixel prevented me from calling 911
The 5s has been given security patches for iOS 12, the last being September 23rd.

That's 8 years of support if it's the last. It was the first 64-bit ARM phone, and the first to have a Secure Enclave, so it might be a bit of a favourite child.

notinty··on AWS us-east-1 outage
It's 0.001; the first 2 9's count.

  5N  = 99.999%
  3N  = 99.9%
  1N5 = 95%
5N is <43m12s downtime per month.

Literally just a bin in a fulfillment warehouse.

An amazon listing doesn't guarantee a particular SKU.

notinty··on CT scans of AirPods evolution
I like it, personally.
notinty··on CT scans of AirPods evolution
A few grand is nothing to scoff at, but if you use it for half as long as your older one then a reasonably kitted-out 14" would work out to ~$80/month.

I didn't know that about the touchbar, that's pretty awful. It's also a shame they couldn't manage to integrate their fancy taptic engine stuff.

Ports are back on the new machines tho--removing them seemed so braindead, but then again I'm not an industrial design machina so what do I know.

notinty··on Opacity Precision
Agreed; immediate analog feedback of a slider is important.

Thanks for the great article, the images you created are especially fantastic.

Edit: my friend just checked and Clip Studio Paint also has 0-100 with no decimal support. Crazy that it's ubiquitous.

notinty··on Opacity Precision
>For an opacity slider to provide 101 steps, it needs to be at least 101 pixels wide.

There's no reason this needs to be the case: slider elements could trap the cursor and give realtime feedback of input.

The iPad Pro trackpad does this with all UI elements and I believe it's an important step for UX.

It's a reproduction of Saint Benedict's code of conduct for overseeing monks; it's not going to be 1:1.

It might be soft evangelism but it's not being used for discrimination.

AIUI there's no EULA problems virtualizing macOS on Mac hardware.

This is about a minimum 24-hour rental of Mac Minis tho.

notinty··on Ask HN: What's so bad about NFTs?
PoW is an awful use of energy with close-to-zero wealth created. Wealth in the original sense of the word.

I see them as transferrable autographs, and would be down to own even small shares of my favourite artists' work, but their energy usage is untenable.

A better solution is to display the ratio of likes to views.

I'm sad about them removing the dislike because I would always calculate the like:dislike ratio for kicks, and one of my hobbies had a uniquely consistent 1000:1 ratio.
