SuperCollider is still around and really mature, Sonic Pi and Overtone are build on top of it. CSound and Faust are more than mature also.

notagoodidea··on VanMoof’s team of ‘bike hunters’ appears to succeed where the city doesn’t
> article says asking for it back is usually sufficient but I’m still skeptical

Personnal and friends experience tends to agree with the article advice. The intensity of the ask vary from "It's my bike" to "It's my bike and we don't want to call the cops about it, right?". Most of the time, they may try to sell it back to you though.

Sometimes it is also due to the university changing their systems too often. When I was at uni, we had to switch from self-hosted + roundcube webmail to full Google suite to full Microsoft 365 : for mail and tooling in less then 9y. With transition period where everything was half-broken.

Oh yes the scan and fetch on Outlook is magic, especially when you are sent links that can be access once before self destruction. So fun. It was at precious job, forgot if I was able to deactivate it or just had to use another mail.

I think to switch to my own domain mail adress but I think to use Migadu [1] instead or even try to host anything.

notagoodidea··on F.el: Modern API for working with files and directories in Emacs
In this case, it is due to emacs having it's own way of modelling a lot of things for a long time. Modern only means "like the other API we tends to use elsewhere these days".
notagoodidea··on Documents reveal McKinsey's role increasing opioid sales until 2019
Developed never really has the meaning that you think it has, imho. In Europe, during a long time, it really meant "like us" without thinking that each European country have a lot of different country. Looks at the difference in the Health system between Belgium and the Nederlands.

Actually the terminology shifted in some organizations as a continum of Low to High income countries (set by the World Bank). It is far from perfect but it frames the differences and terminology differently in your mind.

notagoodidea··on Launching Version 13.1 of Wolfram Language and Mathematica
Not really the reality imho. I was in a cursus where mostly Matlab were taught 10y ago, while I was already programming on the side in Python/R. Most of the students realized after their master that neither academia nor private company were using Matlab and because programming was not the focus, they had a really hard time to transfer their knowledge to any other programming language. Not SW/SE/Dev here, just scientific/engineer cross-over students.

After raising their voices, Faculty finally switched from Matlab to Python for those courses because what matters was your number of hire after their master not to get a deal for a software nobody uses besides two old professors.

And in general, the more academia moves away from private solutions (be it STATA, ArcGIS, Matlab, SAS, etc), education will move from it also. (Belgian University)

notagoodidea··on Why I still recommend Julia
Besides that the SAS vs R is something still ongoing. I heard the aame point made in favour of SAS in Public Health, Clinical trials analysis and set up and different public administration. They trust the algorithms provided by a closed source certified vendors and not an open source alternative.

At the same time, correct implementation of statistics is hard and testing it to be correct is harder.

Any travel by Flixbus longer than 6 - 8h is really painful imho, they are not really long-distance bus. They are nice for cheap big city hopping. Of course a lot of people do use them for longer trips but honestly, I don't know anyone that arrive from a long distance bus rested tbh also.

And honestly it is fairly common to find peanut butter in supermarket in most of Western Europe (at least), may not be good but it exists.

notagoodidea··on Best Pens for 2022: Gel, Ballpoint, Rollerball, and Fountain Pens
I switched back to foutain pens a year ago, wanting to reduce the crazy amount of ball pens I had laying around. I did not wanted it to be another rabbit hole niche hobby and after passing way too much time reading and watching stuff about it, I decided to go the pratical road :

* 1 TWSBI Go with an Extra-Fine nib

* 2 Lamy Safary with a Fine and Bold nib (and two extra nibs Extra Fine and Medium)

The Lamy are nib-swappable. All are in transparent plastic (demo pen) because I liked it. For the inks, I picked the Diamine brand that is a good balance between choice, quality and affordable. It was the affordable, low-maintenance and pragmatic road.

If someone wanted just a more fancy foutain pen, I would advise to look at the Lamy Studio. It use the same nibs than the Safari and are also nib-swappable.

This journey made me realize that Moleskine notebook paper is from perfect to meh with a high-variability in quality. I think my next step would be to pick my next notebook either from Rhodia or Leuchtturm or something with Tomoe River paper (probably Rhodia, simply because it is easier to find).

The best site I found showcasing and reviewing ink is https://mountainofink.com/ I always check the feedback there to pick up my inks even if I focused on one brand by convenience.

EDIT: I also draw a little bit with my pens.

notagoodidea··on “Zero fucks given” in other languages
Seems to be a mix betwen of "Je m'en bats les couilles" and "Le train de tes injures roule sur les rails de mon indifférence", never heard the author version. I stand wrong on the etymology, see below. French-speaking here.

It exists as an entry in the https://fr.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/s%E2%80%99en_badigeonner_le... but I don't think I ever heard someone uses it. The non vulgar original version seems to be "s'en brosser le nombril avec le pinceau de l'indifférence" (To brush one navel with the brush of indifference) and found it's origin in the comic strip Achille Talon.

notagoodidea··on Learn R Through Examples (2020)
Funny, I'll never say that R itself is very academic. The environment maybe, the users sure but the language is very much an mutated Lisp with vectorized operation. Same for the python stuff, I never hit that problem working a lot with it but most of the time when I wanted to check a lib, I landed in C++ aka I am not sure to understand how to read the code.

What in R made it feel academic for you?

notagoodidea··on Learn R Through Examples (2020)
Got the reverse experience. Trained in Matlab, R and Python, we had to follow a database/application class with computer scientist and software engineers where the big project was to make a basic Android application with sqlite database. That was painfully to be dropped in Android Studio without any Java knowledge. And because the class was focused on database, we had no Java introduction or whatever. We were able to team up with students from the other cursus that already had multiple Java projects and classes under their belt but the pill was bitter swallow.
notagoodidea··on On Being an Outsider
First, it is normal to question where your belong and how your multiple experience, background and culture integrated construct your identity and your feeling to belong somewhere. This somewhere can multiple and also everywhere but feeling to belong nowhere is mostly due to the peer pressure to self-identity to only one element of your identity (being your culture, your skin tone, your born country, etc.) that feels like restraining yourself as one tiny part of the multiple identities you carry and have constructed.

One essential essay that really helped me and can not stop to suggest is "In the Name of Identity: Violence and the Need to Belong" by Amin Maalouf [1][2] The original title in French is "Les identités meurtrières" translated as "the murderous identities".

If I may, you are belonging from everywhere that feels home in a way or the other. And the more abroad you'll be, the more home will take multiple dimensions and it's okay. When someone ask you, you can answer "India and Canada" and let's them deal with it, not you :).

With my partner, we cover the ground about the identity questions : me being a second-generation son of arab's parent in an UE country, her being, like you, from a east-asian country but living abroad for 5-6 years now. The question of home, identity and where we belong is common and the answers morph based on where and how we live.

For me is funny, because when I identify myself from the city I was born and raised in UE, I got question about my origins like it is the "correct answer" but if someone from that city hears me speaking, they can't doubt I am from here because I used a lot of the specific slang/dialect from there. It happened a few time ago where a old man helping my mom told that "I can hear you are from here". On the flip coin, I also speak the dialectal Arab from my parent region (albeit with a UE accent) so people speaking Arab can identify from which region/country I must come from. So most of the time, I answer both and let people ask the uncomfortable questions about their conception of identities and where I belong/from themself. But that does not mean that I have dealed with my identity myself, I am still constructing it and trying to gather the different pieces together and glue them, especially now that I am living in yet another country :)

notagoodidea··on A top audio engineer explains NPR’s signature sound (2015)
Yes, I know and that's what would be more impressive for me to see a ML/Algo that could recreate close enough data distribution from lossy to lossless. Not exact reconstruction but close enough in the possible area (so < 16-18kHz). It may or may not be possible but it is more akin to take the inverse of the model of degradation of MP3 (it could be totally impossible).
notagoodidea··on A top audio engineer explains NPR’s signature sound (2015)
I think the first step would be to be able to convert a lossy format as MP3 or ogg to a lossless format as FLAC or Wav. Being able to retrieve close in off lost data from lossy compression would be impressive.
notagoodidea··on Lisp and the Web: Creating Web Apps Through Lisp and GCE
To be picky, Medium may be writer-friendly but never was really reader-friendly. The page are heavy with banners blocking the view, no possibilities to know in advance which article is paywalled or not. I do not have a problem with authors publishing on Medium, just Medium itself.

Besides that, nice and interesting write up!

notagoodidea··on MLJ.jl: A Julia package for composable machine learning
How far could you go with some automatic cleaning, something like `maptrace` [0] and some topology rules when you have your vector file to finish with some manual artistic polish? Because, i don't believe that you will achieve easily the "do-it-like-me" result expected from either GAN or VAE or autoencoders. In case of you want to look, the classic examples about style transfer (Photo to Van Gogh style, etc.) seems to be the way to go. Specific to Julia, you can look at Flux.jl or KNet.jl.

notagoodidea··on MLJ.jl: A Julia package for composable machine learning
On the other side, we observe more and more inter-languages's ecosystem crossing from/to Python to leverage its gigantic set of libraries. Julia interface with a lot of other languages but it is a big trend for the last years.

I think the two-language problem begins to be as we move forward a network of multi-languages calling each other instead of either having to rewrite everything from scratch either relying on a C/C++/Fortran/Rust lib and the C ABI to patch them. We may finish with a set of "meta"-langurust in C code nameages permitting the interaction of a large number of libraries and programming languages outside of their silo.

Moreover Julia coupled with Pycall could "corrode" à la Rust for a more smooth migration to pure Julia.

notagoodidea··on IPython as a System Shell
It depends, for other python REPL/Env not really but it is the standard way to call shell command from ed [1] for example. Julia have also a shell mode in its REPL [2]. Personally, I like to use Raku [3] instead of Python or Shell script. It make it easy to drop one-liner, call shell commands [4] and you can super easily make a script a small CLI utilities by writing a MAIN sub [5].
