nortonham··on Iowa's Senate advances bill to loosen child labor laws
important details from the article:

"The Biden administration this month urged U.S. companies to make sure they aren’t illegally hiring children to perform dangerous jobs, after an investigation found more than 100 kids working overnight and handling hazardous equipment — like skull splitters and bone saws — for a company that cleans slaughterhouses across the country.

The Labor Department says it has more than 600 child labor investigations underway, and officials are concerned about the exploitation of children, particularly migrants who may not even have a parent in the United States."

nortonham··on The early days of Linux
BSD's aren't really opaque. I understand what larger point you're trying to make about the difference between linux and bsd development. But the biggest BSD projects all have mailing lists where you can see the decisions being made, and the source of the core of each one is available to everyone.

Same for pigs (Cerdo, chancho) and pork (puerco).

nortonham··on Chinese investment in Afghanistan’s lithium sector (2022)
Most people don't like their nation being invaded and seeing their families die. Why would Afghanis be any different?
nortonham··on Chinese investment in Afghanistan’s lithium sector (2022)
China's plan could just be do business with current gov't rather than invade and install a puppet gov't at an incredible cost to human life. They tend to do business with nations all over the world. They don't comment much on the politics of nations they do business with (e.g. Saudi Arabia, Iran, etc).

I also think that is a very odd reading of the US invasion of Afghanistan. Even more so considering that the US has a track record of supporting fascists and terrorists for decades, and will overthrow gov'ts if it means access to natural resources, and greater profits for US corporations.

nortonham··on Xi Jinping Says He Is Preparing China for War: Take Him Seriously
>so China remaining stable and friendly would be good for people in China and for people outside China. It's not controversial, is it?

On it's own that's not a controversial thing to say. But headlines like "Xi Jinping says he is preparing china for war" don't tell the whole story. China is only preparing itself in case things get worse globally. The US is often the aggressor, and the US has been trying to destabilize China for a very long time. The Chinese government knows this.

>Mass media in the West is largely in the hands of private interests with their own agendas, it's not in lockstep with whoever is in power.

I would argue that these "private interests" have a big part to play in getting people into power, and for influencing those in power.

nortonham··on From coaches to pushy parents, US Men’s Soccer is a married to Mediocrity
One point I'd like to make:

> but it should be taking a serious look at what happened in Italy. The Azzurri have failed to qualify for the last two World Cups because they have populated their league with more foreign talent than ever.

Italian soccer has always had foreign players. It was the best league in the world in the late 80's through the 90's. They had great Italian players mixed with incredible foreign talent.

I think a bigger problem is Italian coaches are notorious for not trusting young players, and in return the younger players growth is stunted. Italian soccer also doesn't have the same outside investment that the premier league in England has. The best coaches are working in England. Clubs are investing a lot in youth development, because there is just so much many in the English game.

I do actually agree with a lot of what he wrote about the number of qualified coaches. That has to change for sure.

nortonham··on Xi Jinping Says He Is Preparing China for War: Take Him Seriously
"preparing for war"

That's what a military is meant to do, be prepared to fight. That's true all over the world. China's military budget is still smaller than that of the US's. Further, our military budget is partly a product of the corruption and cronyism between defense contractors and the US gov't. That's also one (of many) reasons why we wouldn't win a war with China imo.

The US gov't would be better served working on the numerous problems we have at home. Obviously that won't impress anyone at board level at various defense contractors.

nortonham··on Xi Jinping Says He Is Preparing China for War: Take Him Seriously
>Unfortunately for everyone, over the past few years it's become more clear that Xi is not as smart as the leader of a gigantic autocracy really needs to be.

Who's everyone? Do you mean the political and pundit class of the US and the anglo world?

China's economy continues to grow while the west is stagnating economically, culturally. The US has unfettered gun violence, a racist criminal justice system, an ever worsening homeless problem, opioid addiction, most people only one medical emergency away from not being able to afford their rent, awful education system, people living paycheck to paycheck, rising cost of living while real wages have been stagnant for decades........

China handled the COVID epidemic far better than the US did. Approval rating for Chinese gov't and US gov't don't even compare. And how the Chinese populace views its future vs how most westerners view theirs, much the same.

>....have allowed the Party to manipulate public opinion pretty effectively

uhhh, we might want to read up on the mass media in the US/West since we're talking about manipulating public opinion.

>Who would buy a Mac and put Linux on it?

Some people might buy a mac and put linux on it to help out asahi linux with testing/troubleshooting etc, or because they like the hardware more than what other brands offer. Others in this comment section are running Asahi Linux as their daily driver apparently. There really isn't an ARM machine on the market like an M1/M2.

> you could buy a faster Intel or AND machine

Genuine question, what intel or AMD chip is better than the M1 or M2? Are you referring to desktops, laptops, or both?

I get that you can buy/build a very good machine for less money than brand new Mac, but is the performance really as good as the m1 or m2?
