nopassrecover··on The Programmer Salary Taboo
Improving foreign policy would be a cheap way to reduce military costs - relying on a militia was the American tradition up until the Cold War and is indeed one of the reasons you have the right to arms.
nopassrecover··on Ace of spades, Minecraft like FPS
Actually if you read http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/01/20/proto-minecraft-a... apparently releasing code (unintentionally) is what destroyed Minecraft's inspiration Infiniminer.
nopassrecover··on Chomsky was wrong: evolutionary analysis shows languages obey few rules
Or it could just be because they are different species - that means different vocal chords, different brains, different ears and so on. It's equivalent to saying "chimpanzees act like baby humans when taught to play with blocks, yet still retain distinctive means of movement".
nopassrecover··on The Programmer Salary Taboo
As "bad" as 15%? Tax is at least 38% here in Au for that wage (was 60% not so long ago).
nopassrecover··on The Guy Who Says He Owns 50% Of Facebook Just Filed A Boatload Of New Evidence
Mark's style could also be forged with a bit of frequency analysis so I'm not sure it proves anything (although it's admittedly unlikely).
nopassrecover··on Fukushima: What happened - and what needs to be done
Agreed. For some reason (I believe early news reports explaining the rating) I thought the impact of the disaster was more relevant than the radiation magnitude - i.e. the disaster level was somewhat correlated to casualties and the impact on the environment.
nopassrecover··on Edw519 wrote a book compiling his best HN Comments
I just saw this in his profile yesterday, intend to buy.

EDIT: Apparently I need to be a US citizen. I'll find some other way to send him a donation.

nopassrecover··on Adobe Creative Suite now in subscription form
I think Adobe pirating is pretty rife, although they do also offer heavily discounted student editions for junior designers. My understanding is that the people that buy Adobe software at the commercial price are design studios, and this is one of the most essential tools to their profession. It's comparable to asking why .NET shops pay the similar prices for Visual Studio.
nopassrecover··on Astronomers may have witnessed a star torn apart by a black hole
I would say hinder. If we assume that interesting events are distributed equally throughout space (i.e. the universe is uniform) but differ over time (the early universe was obviously different to the current universe) then astronomers currently get to observe a wide range of events throughout both space and time. If events were observed immediately from all distances, then astronomers would only be able to observe current events.
nopassrecover··on SEC considers letting startups use social networks to raise money
I'm not sure why it's socially acceptable to convince people to part with their money for things they don't need, or to risk their money in games of chance, but not to encourage them to invest in the potential of an idea.

If the problem is misrepresentation of what they are investing in then there are already laws to protect against this, just as there are laws (at least in Australia) protecting consumers from false advertising or spurious sales claims.

nopassrecover··on Why T-shirts matter at tech companies
Darwin has a CBD?
nopassrecover··on Why T-shirts matter at tech companies
Yeah this has always puzzled me. Everytime I order an AA t-shirt (I live in Australia) I get warned to order a size up because they trend slim. After getting bit once or twice by this, I just order my regular size or even one smaller now and have no issue.
nopassrecover··on Why T-shirts matter at tech companies
Interesting data point, but it doesn't support the thesis that programmers get fatter the more they've programmed unless you can show the attendees at the Linux symposium are older/more experienced now than in the past.

You'd probably also want some external data as I'm pretty sure people as a whole are getting fatter.

nopassrecover··on Scott Adams on How to Get a Real Education
Does that make his advice wrong?

Disagree with what he says, not who he is.

nopassrecover··on Harvard's 1899 Entrance Exam [pdf]
My maths is relatively weak, and I found the maths component trivially easy. Perhaps mathematics had a smaller part to play in society at this stage, because asking a university level student what a prime number is or how to do long division seems trivial.
nopassrecover··on Fired employee wipes out whole season of TV show
Surely the data company has redundancy or backups or data recovery software available? Surely they considered the risk of a staff member deleting copies / a hacker / a fire.

Surely the producers have at least working copies somewhere (I can't see people live-editing on a cloud server). Surely they considered the risk of the company going bust / data loss / their own staff deleting the copies.

Would assume this was an April Fools thing it's that bad (except for the fact it quite obviously isn't due to the quite obvious reputation damage that will effectively destroy this company).

nopassrecover··on Samsung installs keylogger on its laptop computers
Sure, but this doesn't substantiate calling Windows stupid, which by itself implies fault with the OS.
nopassrecover··on Samsung installs keylogger on its laptop computers
To attack a company or product based on opinion rather than fact is the same fallacy.
nopassrecover··on Samsung installs keylogger on its laptop computers
"Fortunetaly (sic) I don't use crappy windows. I run Gentoo Linux."

A reasonable observation followed by a stupid effectively ad hominem attack. The reason your Linux PC is free from the Samsung keylogger (if it does exist) is only because there's little to no incentive to bother with attacking Linux users. Do you really believe Microsoft has spent billions in research and hiring the brightest minds in technology to create an inherently insecure OS, or is it more likely that the incredibly large userbase creates much greater incentives for security attacks?

nopassrecover··on Show HN: My 6 Weeks Project, MultiplayerChess.com
Fantastic design. Only issue at the moment is people leaving after 3 moves or seemingly permanently idle, but no doubt that's due to people trying it out.

Great domain by the way! I think this could have massive numbers of users if you want it to (like other far less appealing chess sites).

nopassrecover··on Quadrocopters juggle balls cooperatively
The solo version is closer to juggling:

nopassrecover··on Sony says PS 3 hacker Geohot has fled to South America
I find it understand how a company that released some of the most creative advertising of the past decade (Sony Bravia adverts) could simultaneously be so PR-self-destructive.

Is the leadership of top companies really so blissfully unaware of the impact of social news?

nopassrecover··on Color
Particularly for a mobile-app - surely the site barely matters when it just links to the relevant app-store / Android marketplace.
nopassrecover··on From Redmond with Love - IE team sends cake for FF4
It's a long-standing tradition between Mozilla and Microsoft I believe.
nopassrecover··on Netflix website and ability to instantly watch movies both unavailable.
I guess my point is, a post highlighting this relevance as your comment did makes it newsworthy, whereas "look some site is down" is mostly context-less for a lot of us.
nopassrecover··on Netflix website and ability to instantly watch movies both unavailable.
Considering this seems to be working at the moment (2 hours later) does this really qualify as news? Sure, significant downtime might be of interest, but are we really going to link the URL of every web-service that is down for an hour or two here or there?

A post about the causes or effects of said outage, or general related social commentary might be worthy of a HN submission - but to simply throw the URL of any service showing a 404 for some small amount of time seems a bit pointless (exceptions perhaps being Google/Facebook being down worldwide for a couple of hours).

nopassrecover··on Learnings from having Mailchimp ask me to kindly leave.
Sounds like there should be some recalibration of those figures for small lists. Typical on-target mailouts for small businesses (1000-3000) are usually accompanied by at least a couple opt-outs based on the content no longer being relevant / changed interests, but I'd hardly call the list spam.
nopassrecover··on AT&T has a fiberoptic splitter copying our data to NSA
I bet your father-in-law wouldn't take too kindly to Government workers taking a look at his wife naked when they felt like it or recording (if you'll forgive me) their ahem marital moments.

Privacy is a human requirement, as evidenced by the deprivation of privacy as a punishment in prisons, and is much more than protection of those with something to hide.

nopassrecover··on I just don’t get LinkedIn, do you?
Keeping in touch with business connections is neither "working the system" nor "incestuous".

I think you are seriously confusing "networking events" with the general good practice of making a good reputation in your industry and staying connected with industry leaders / good past colleagues.

nopassrecover··on Digg Makes a Play for Relevance, Increases Front Page Speed 75%
Well claiming complete non-awareness of the popular competitor just seems a little odd. It would be kind of like Mozilla saying they weren't aware of IE - sure execution is all that matters, but it's curious why you'd say that.
