noobiemcfoob··on VR is opening up new ways to experience art
Your point about 'good enough' is exactly what I stumbled on a few months ago.

With VRidge (https://riftcat.com/vridge) I was able to setup my Pixel 3 in a Daydream headset, use 2 older smartphones as my tracked controllers, and enjoy everything from BeatSaber to SkyrimVR. Image could be better and smoother, but I don't care. I'm throwing fireballs and am fully confident the VR age is here for all intents and purposes. I'll drop the $$$$ on a dedicated setup in a few more months, I'm sure.

VRidge sent out an email earlier today about supporting the Oculus Quest.

noobiemcfoob··on Ask HN: Faking your resume to acquire projects
> I think my employer knew better what they needed, than they did themselves,

This is a terrifying sentiment.

noobiemcfoob··on It’s Game Time: Oculus Quest and Rift S Now Available
There are multiple controller options now. Maybe mix and match, but also imagine breaking and needing to replace just one.

So I get the reasoning but would still expect a bundle option just for simplicity

noobiemcfoob··on It’s Game Time: Oculus Quest and Rift S Now Available
Seems like a safe bet the answer is "no"
noobiemcfoob··on Millennials and Gen Z Increasingly Pessimistic About Their Lives, Survey Finds
The scale of it all is ever increasing, even if the sentiment is near constant.
noobiemcfoob··on Millennials and Gen Z Increasingly Pessimistic About Their Lives, Survey Finds
Which underlines the parent post's point. Those margins are so slim as to not matter. We're talking about the entire election hanging on the difference of one moderate sized city's population.
noobiemcfoob··on Spina bifida: Keyhole surgery repairs baby spine in womb
Recognizing the medical industry as what it is can be really difficult. It's not just there is a bell curve of knowledge and ability, but something with more dimensions that accounts for a world as a big as ours.

Just like I'm sure there are software shops out there doing what I would call impossible, not all doctors know the full extent of the practice or where those particularly skilled practitioners might be.

noobiemcfoob··on Brains Speed Up Perception by Guessing What’s Next
They have known it too. The first cited experiments in this article were done in 2012. I wonder how long it's existed as a theory in neuroscience.
noobiemcfoob··on Map of Proposed US Time Zone Changes
Then we invented everything else and along with that UTC. Which works until we have colonies on another planet. We should go ahead and move to a galactic time standard.
noobiemcfoob··on Tertill Weeding Robot
So...you pick the weeds out of the collar? You've reduced the land you have to maintain to just that which this robot can't get to.
noobiemcfoob··on True Surprise
Luck seems relative. He did get shot after all
noobiemcfoob··on True Surprise
Similar with scientists in my experience. Though it's more easily explained as the older generation sees the terms as interchangeable or not worth arguing about. The younger generation tends to use sex specifically and might call out improper use of gender.

noobiemcfoob··on Against metrics: how measuring performance by numbers backfires
You don't address the parent's point.

Trying to group 1000 people together and measure all of them, sure that seems insurmountable for an informal system.

Taking that same group of 1000, splitting them into subgroups of 7 and giving those individual groups their own goals and autonomy to pursue them may again allow for informal performance measurement.

noobiemcfoob··on Andrew Yang and Pete Buttigieg Have Blown Up on Twitter, and in Betting Markets
Tim Kaine, from memory. Palin sunk McCain. And Paul Ryan was no match for Joe Biden
noobiemcfoob··on What Is Amazon?
The article doesn't seem to be referring to Walmart's employees as the beneficiaries of its welfare system. The argument to me says that customers of Walmart benefited from the reduced costs brought about by the innovations as if it were a welfare system built outside of government.

That said...yeah, that's a bit too pro-capitalistic monstrosities for my tastes.

noobiemcfoob··on A guide to difficult conversations
People observe different things and even then, weight the memories of those observations differently. There are many who employ a barrage of "factual" observations. These are unavoidably biased even as the speaker attempts to pan the feelings out.

Often a speaker doing this feels that the sheer number of data points makes their strategy (that they will argue for shortly after finishing their list of observations) all but inevitable. People who have interacted with such arguers get understandably defensive when shown a barrage of facts painting them a certain way.

In the presence of a pattern of behavior, one example followed by every means necessary of keeping the offender on your side while building a strategy should be enough if the pattern is real and the offender has good intentions.

noobiemcfoob··on A guide to difficult conversations
NVC perhaps is often employed in situations that don't quite require that degree of formulation, but when parties have been bickering so much that even simple "Hello" courtesies get interpreted as passive aggression, the structure of NVC allows the building of communication.

Anything that gets and keeps both parties talking in these situations, even by marginal degrees, is worth everything.

noobiemcfoob··on Google's Work with China Eroding US Military Advantage, Dunford Says
To echo the point that decentralization of big tech might be an advantage to foreign powers, wouldn't multiple companies be harder to monitor in their exchange of IP across state lines?

noobiemcfoob··on Sting Operations to Expose Celebrity Psychics
I'd agree with the first part of your statement. Though what it means is that anyone's worldview is a flawed model from the start better described as a cult than as the truth.
noobiemcfoob··on Activision-Blizzard layoffs after reporting record results
With the availability of Unity and other engines funded by AAA companies, that's enabled startups to pursue new game concepts using AAA efforts as a foundation. That's an ideal model. AAA games are both the standard bearer and the entry level. It's up to gamers to pursue and support a community built on top of that for more experimental games.

Wherever there is attention, someone will monetize it.

noobiemcfoob··on Activision-Blizzard layoffs after reporting record results
It still applies to the gaming industry, but to your point, the bargaining power of high talent programmers is suppressed by eager programmers (not mutually exclusive groups).
noobiemcfoob··on How hard is it to have a conversation on Twitter? So hard even the CEO can’t
My theory is that Jack is trying to expose the flaws of twitter to the rest of the company. A way of bludgeoning the stubborn in the company by a blitz of bad press
noobiemcfoob··on Python exceptions considered an anti-pattern
The two articles together present an interesting perspective on python programming philosophy. I'm far more inclined towards the exception approach. And while I like that type annotations exist, using them in examples convinces me that the examples don't apply to all python
noobiemcfoob··on How the Brain Creates a Timeline of the Past
"Just a few months after Howard and Shankar started to flesh out their theory, other scientists independently uncovered neurons, dubbed “time cells,” that were “as close as we can possibly get to having that explicit record of the past,” Howard said. These cells were each tuned to certain points in a span of time, with some firing, say, one second after a stimulus and others after five seconds, essentially bridging time gaps between experiences."

Most relevant idea from the article for me
