nonamenoslogan··on White noise as sleep aid may do more harm than good, say scientists
This is my solution too--bonus the fan covers up the sound of my Labrador retrievers licking themselves in the middle of the night (which wakes me out of a dead sleep every time).
nonamenoslogan··on White House Considers ‘The Great Barrington Declaration’ Herd Immunity Strategy
Considers? Isn't this what the White House's plan was from the beginning or at least since Trump stuck his foot in his mouth about disinfectants and lights for internal medicine? If it isn't, I'd love to see their actual strategy beyond, "it is what it is," and "it's going to just disappear, trust me."
nonamenoslogan··on Publication of Cryptocurrency Enforcement Framework
I call bullshit. Ebay ALWAYS sides with the buyer.
nonamenoslogan··on Stanley Kubrick's 'Eyes Wide Shut': Behind the Mask of Corruption
I wanted to read in to something deep and twisted, but this article is a nothing-burger. Alas.
nonamenoslogan··on Trump gives nod to Oracle buyout of TikTok in US
So soon enough, we'll see the TikTok logo on the back of a Facebook sign? Sniff...
nonamenoslogan··on Inviting employees back to the office – if you dare
We've been back since May, no changes other than face-coverings required while in the general building (but not always at your own desk). AFAIAC we locked down too early in my neck of the woods, the infection rate is only going upward at this point, but another "lock-down" isn't going to happen.
nonamenoslogan··on I Tried to Live Without the Tech Giants. It Was Impossible
Bullshit. I've got plenty of money and a pill-addicted wife-- trust me those f'ing things cost upwards of $200 a week during some stretches. Reason for taking them has nothing to do with how much we can afford and everything to do with feeling "pain-free."
nonamenoslogan··on Why I still use an old PowerPC Mac
I still regularly use an iBook G4 to write HTML and play games. Love the simplicity of the oldies but goodies.
nonamenoslogan··on How Did the Casio F91W Become a Terrorist Icon?
The 'beep' is the dead give-away on non-Casio Casios. I have a handful of replica G-Shocks, Frogman, Gravitymaster, etc. and the beep frequency is wrong even when the more advanced features like compass and thermometer work. For what its worth, they cost about 1/10th their genuine counterparts and are visibly identical.

One last word of caution, even the F91W fakes do the three-button CASIo module thing now.

nonamenoslogan··on How Did the Casio F91W Become a Terrorist Icon?
This is exactly why I love the simple Casio designs too. The F91W is so light and simple, and I have ZERO fear of washing my hands with it or bashing it in to the wall while pulling cables. I usually forego the F91W for something like the WS1200 or the SPH-600, usually about double the price of the F91W but with a bunch more features AND still not scary to wear in any situation.
nonamenoslogan··on WHO says Covid-19 pandemic is 'one big wave', not seasonal
Hmm, is it not a bit early to determine that?
nonamenoslogan··on Swedish epidemiology boss says questioned Covid-19 strategy seems to be working
I didn't realize there were guns in the 4th century BC.
nonamenoslogan··on If NSA Can Hack WiFi 8 Miles Out – Implications for Commercial Use
I can't speak to hundreds of miles, but I built a Wifi bridge that went about 1.75 miles across a cow pasture with center-pivot sprinklers using a pair of WRT-54G routers, DD-WRT, and some yagi/panel antennas from Amazon about 10 years ago. Total price was under $300 and speeds of 11mb were all we went for as it was just feeding a PC for browsing and time-card punches in a shop across the pasture from the office.

It ran happily for nearly 6 years before being replaced with a packaged kit of antennas and POE injectors that advertised 54mb over 2-3 miles seamlessly for around the same price.

If you had a pile of old 802.11b gear and the time and gumption, I'd think you could build something like this for sub-$50 at this point.

nonamenoslogan··on Remembering Windows 2000
I have similar recollection of ME, on my personal 333MHz Celeron with 128mb of RAM laptop it ran fantastically, never had issues and was stable and while 2000/XP were also stable, ME was fast compared to 2000/XP on the same hardware.

Other people I know couldn't get past a VxD error on the first install, others couldn't get faster K6 or PIII's to be stable with it.

It was a love it or hate it thing--my opinion of Vista and 8.0 are similar.

nonamenoslogan··on Fountain pen ink properties
I will echo the Varsity as a great daily. Its the only fountain pen the office supply place at work stocks without a special order too. They don’t leak, ink is smooth, and it comes in purple.
nonamenoslogan··on I Replaced My MacBook Pro with a Raspberry Pi 4 8GB for a Day
Surprisingly enough I've found nearly any Windows 7 or 8's sticker license will work for 10--find any old laptop/desktop with one and you'll have a "free" license.
nonamenoslogan··on The coronavirus pandemic isn’t ending – it’s surging
Well if it was on Twitter, it has to be true.
nonamenoslogan··on The coronavirus pandemic isn’t ending – it’s surging
Idaho never really locked much down although they gave it lip service on TV. I've watched as mask usage over the last month has gone from 50%ish 4 weeks ago, to 1 in 5 or so two weeks ago, to 1 in 25 or more this week.
nonamenoslogan··on The modern HTTPS world has no place for old web servers
After more than 20 years of running my own webservers on everything from old Sparcstations to Debian VPSs, I took a few year hiatus from having a big web presence and pointed my domain at a simple github.io page. It worked so well I decided to go Github completely for my simple blog/pictures/projects web page, I’ve gone almost full circle back to the original static HTML style.
nonamenoslogan··on iPhone SE: The One-Eyed King?
Or use the 3.5mm to Lightning adapter. Maybe not 'perfect,' but your $1000 headphones would make sound with one.
nonamenoslogan··on iPhone SE: The One-Eyed King?
I think most people use a case. Not using a case on a glass body $400-1200 device you're going to carry around in your pocket is pretty risky.
nonamenoslogan··on Controlling My A/C with a Gameboy
I have a Casio CMD-30 that can ‘learn’ codes; its a fun watch.
nonamenoslogan··on How to make pizza like a Neapolitan master
Personally, I like my Pizazz Pizza plate/oven thing. I make dough out of like 5 ingredients and let it rise for a few hours in the fridge. Top with whatever and eat--pizza is about enjoyment to me, not this Anthony Bourdain never ending quest for the perfect slice of sushi, its about making it, enjoying it, eating it.
nonamenoslogan··on 98.css – design system for building faithful recreations of Windows 98 UIs
This is very cool! Mind if I fork and re-work to look like Solaris? :D
nonamenoslogan··on Bored? How about trying a Linux speed run?
I've spent many hours doing similar things to this--my most recent was building Virtualbox VM's of the more interesting abandoned and ancient OSs from WinWorldPC. So far I've got working versions of OpenSTEP, BeOS, SyllableOS, Plan9, Solaris, ReactOS, Memphis/Neptune/Chicago, OS/2 Warp and ECommStation, and another dozen or so. When I say working, I mean bootable with a network connection of some type, though mine are usually a little higher up the stack than raw UDP.

Thanks for a great read, love ideas like this if for nothing else but to keep one's nerdiness and thirst for obscure trivia alive.

nonamenoslogan··on COBOL programmers answer call
Two systems, one for Tax/Assessment which was provided by the state is SQL and ASPX and the other which is used for historical inquiry and document generation which is in-house code in SQL and Coldfusion.

The ASPX taxing/assessment system is the slow one in comparison when it comes to calculating. The ColdFusion system is not as hindered but its used for making letters and reports, exporting layers to GIS, and generally replacing COBOL-screens for information retrieval.

Is/are there better solutions, yes, but I was giving an example rather than critiquing the County’s choice of software that happened well before I came along.

nonamenoslogan··on COBOL programmers answer call
I work in County IT in a medium large county in my state, about 110K residents. We just finished a migration from COBOL on HP3000 to SQL+ColdFusion and some ASPX. COBOL is infinitely faster at computation on PARisc than SQL is on Intel; our HP3000 is a 120MHz with 500mb of ram and our Intel stuff is VM on ESXi. Running a tax roll on COBOL for 45K parcels takes a fifth of the time on the HP despite the massive hardware differences!
nonamenoslogan··on NsCDE: Not So Common Desktop Environment
I've been using CDE since it was open sourced and love it. This is a very cool project, I'll give it a try!
nonamenoslogan··on SETI@home shuts down after 21 years
My first was an AMD 286 @ 12MHz, still have it in a cigar box somewhere.
nonamenoslogan··on Tiny electric car looks like a washing machine and costs just $6,600
I work under 5 miles from my home in a city in the Northwestern US. I ride a 50cc moped throughout the warm months here (anything over mid-50 F so late-March through mid-October usually). I think a reliable sub-40mph electric would work well for me the other times of the year provided it could drive in the snow if equipped with reasonable snow tires.
