nonamenoslogan··on A Trump-backed crypto bill just suffered a bruising defeat in the Senate
Who would have thought that Senators prefer to get their cash the old fasioned way; via AIPAC and hedgefunds.
nonamenoslogan··on SimCity 3k in 4k (2025)
Can confirm it runs on Debian with Wine just fine.
nonamenoslogan··on SimCity 3k in 4k (2025)
Some of us use 9/11 as a milestone event in our lexicon of world changing events.
nonamenoslogan··on I’ve built a virtual museum with nearly every operating system you can think of
This is stellar. I've been doing this for a few years myself, but I thought I was killing it with like 70ish OSs. Thank you for all your work!

nonamenoslogan··on MacBook Neo
How come my iPhone can't just run MacOS at this point?
nonamenoslogan··on UNIX99, a UNIX-like OS for the TI-99/4A (2025)
This is awesome! Thank you!
nonamenoslogan··on UNIX99, a UNIX-like OS for the TI-99/4A (2025)
I'm using a Pelco 9" PVM that had a former life as a security camera monitor. Suprisingly good video for composite, but alas its not very large.
nonamenoslogan··on UNIX99, a UNIX-like OS for the TI-99/4A (2025)
Thanks! I've got mine running in to a 9" Pelco PVM and it works well but yea, its tiny. I'd love to plumb in VGA and use a 15" flat panel. Would love a link.
nonamenoslogan··on UNIX99, a UNIX-like OS for the TI-99/4A (2025)
HOLY COW. Thank you for this. I LOVE the Ti99/4a, its one of the first computers I ever used. I've got one up and running at home now currently and can't wait to try this.
nonamenoslogan··on 27-year-old Apple iBooks can connect to Wi-Fi and download official updates
If you have High Sierra on USB, it installs just fine. You need a High Sierra machine to make the USB stick, but once you have one, its simple to reinstall.
nonamenoslogan··on An ARM Homelab Server, or a Minisforum MS-R1 Review
The MacMini will still be running in 5-7 years, reliably, and still have updates from Apple on the macOS side. It will still be running in 10+ years too should you keep it that long.

MinisForum makes disposable hardware. We used to use them for TV computers at work, and while they are cheap, they are fidgity with hardware and drivers, come with hacked-Windows Enterprise installed by default, and generally last for about 2 years before they hit the recycle pile.

nonamenoslogan··on What your Bluetooth devices reveal
Kroger here has done that with their app. The loyalty card/phone number still works for many of the specials, but the "digital deals" thing by using the app and scanning a QR code on the price sticker gives BIGGER discounts. Its not the most convenient way to shop, but I am willing to save 15-20% more usually.
nonamenoslogan··on Notepad++ hijacked by state-sponsored actors
I use LuLu, it works great. Its kept my older versions of Photoshop and Acrobat from complaining and showing me ads for newer versions for the last couple years!
nonamenoslogan··on Defeating a 40-year-old copy protection dongle
Was this NetZero? I kind of recall their CDs would do something similar, launch an Ad supported version of Netscape--but if you just copied the Dial-Up connection it made, you could recreate it without the need for the Browser.
nonamenoslogan··on Apple M5 chip
I haven't either, though I've purposely kept my M1 on Sonoma for now because the newer OSs have dorked up my Ham Radio software.
nonamenoslogan··on Apple M5 chip
I'll echo this, I've been buying these for my wife since the original Bip, and the battery life alone is more than worth it. She wears hers nearly daily.
nonamenoslogan··on 20 Years of Gmail
I traded a poster for the HBO series Carnivale for my invite.
nonamenoslogan··on Why are border smugglers trafficking bologna?
I hate to break it to you, but if you want to feed 8B people, industrial agriculture is the only way.
nonamenoslogan··on As TikTok grows, so does suspicion
Interactions, Q&A, and inspiration for hobbies doesn't take "knowing" the creator.
nonamenoslogan··on As TikTok grows, so does suspicion
Me too. I haven't used Facebook since 2010, Twitter since 2016, and I recently closed out my Instagram after using it since 2012ish. Tiktok has almost zero of my info besides my email address, a few videos I've uploaded, and my watching preferences. I'm actually fine with data collection on the location/watching habits/likes--it gives me more relevant content.
nonamenoslogan··on As TikTok grows, so does suspicion
I completely agree. Another thing I like is that Tiktok is also nearly completely anonymous. I don't see anyone I know on there, showing me their stupid kid videos or telling me about the latest thing they just bought. I see OTHER PEOPLE's kid videos and things they bought and if I don't want to see them, I just scroll on.
nonamenoslogan··on As TikTok grows, so does suspicion
This has been my experience--once and awhile a new topic will start showing up in my feed, say 1%'r motorcycle clubs or peanut-butter-whisky drinkers. All it takes is a couple "not interested" clicks and poof, back to people showing off vintage computers and HAM radio videos.
nonamenoslogan··on As TikTok grows, so does suspicion
Not sure why this is downvoted--that's basically exactly how the app picks videos for you to watch. YOU click on things or linger on them; the AI remembers and shows you more.
nonamenoslogan··on As TikTok grows, so does suspicion
Having watched a lot of TikTok, I can say they aren't going to get much from the vast majority of that data.
nonamenoslogan··on Why your next home computer should be an old Xeon workstation (2019)
I completely agree on keeping old gear running but the tradeoffs in power consumption make it worth upgrading to current-gen after a certain amount of time.
nonamenoslogan··on Pronunciation Guide for Unix
I’ve always called \ a ‘whack,’ but not sure it was rooted in Unix.
nonamenoslogan··on Ask HN: How do I learn real-world COBOL?
I did this a few years ago to support an HP3000 in a new job. Spent a year working with COBOL enough to get semi proficient and feel confident running and editing programs. We eventually turned the system down in favor of web+SQL and I'll likely never COBOL again, but the truth is COBOL is a pretty straightforward and fun language to work with if you're not already stuck in the C/C++ mode of thinking. Its pretty easy to read and decipher.
nonamenoslogan··on Three Arrows Capital has defaulted on a loan worth more than $670M
Ahh, I see you just watched "Web of Make Believe" too.
nonamenoslogan··on “Harbinger households” consistently buy products that get discontinued (2019)
I LOVED my 11" Air, bought one in 2010, used it daily as my only laptop until 2017, gave it to my son who used it until he graduated in 2019. I replaced it with a 13" MBP which I also really like. MBP died a cat-related falling off the table tragedy recently so I pulled out the Air and was shocked--in 12ish years, my eyes no longer think its tiny screen is reasonably viewable. I wish they'd make another 11" with a retina display, but I guess Apple knows best, I replaced the 13" MBP with another 13" MBP, an M1 this time.
