Probably the main one, people mostly complain about context window management rather than token usage
noname120··on Show HN: Local-First Linux MicroVMs for macOS
Not true, OrbStack uses Virtualization.framework: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36189550
noname120··on Coccinelle: Source-to-source transformation tool
It’s not only great to fix issues and backport at scale, it’s also very useful to do patches that work universally across kernels no matter how badly modified the sources are.

One example is that there are patches for Android kernels to allow rooting the phone with maximum discretion in order to bypass integrity checks. Unfortunately manufacturers modify Linux sources so sloppily that diffs never apply cleanly and you have to endlessly fix hunk rejects.

I created Coccinelle patches that can universally apply to any Linux kernel between 3.18 and 5.15. It has been tested over 100+ Linux kernel sources from Android phone manufacturers and works flawlessly! https://github.com/devnoname120/kernelsu-coccinelle

The learning curve is steep (documentation is thin so you have to look at the code), but the rewards are well worth it. I compiled a list of conferences, slides, and examples to get started if anyone is interested: https://github.com/devnoname120/kernelsu-coccinelle#how-to-l...

noname120··on Skip the Tips: A game to select "No Tip" but dark patterns try to stop you
I don’t know a single bank in Europe that provides this option

Edit: Perplexity says this:

> cards cannot block DCC offers because the merchant terminal identifies your card’s country of origin from the card number and offers DCC accordingly. Always manually decline at payment to let the card handle conversion at better rates

noname120··on Resizing windows on macOS Tahoe – the saga continues
For the first one (and all other screen-related bugs) you can use BetterDisplay to fix it: https://betterdisplay.pro/
noname120··on OpenCiv3: Open-source, cross-platform reimagining of Civilization III
Yeah but this command sucks because AFAIK then it doesn’t even verify notarized apps anymore (for example if the certificate is invalid, if it was revoked, etc.)
noname120··on Guinea worm on track to be 2nd eradicated human disease; only 10 cases in 2025
Are they just the known infected animals or is it an estimation of the total count of infected animals?
noname120··on Guinea worm on track to be 2nd eradicated human disease; only 10 cases in 2025
How can you reliably eradicate it from wild animals? Sounds like an impossible task if there is no broad treatment we could put in the water or something.

Yeah same here, specifically on my (public) GitHub email address

Do you have sources for these statements?

noname120··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2026)
Do you also hire for managing/team lead/head of engineering positions by any chance?
noname120··on 4x faster network file sync with rclone (vs rsync) (2025)
I hope that you sponsor the rclone project given that it’s the core of your business! I couldn’t find any indication online that you do give back to the project. I hope I’m wrong.
noname120··on AISLE’s autonomous analyzer found all CVEs in the January OpenSSL release
I expected much worse to be honest. Vim’s inline #ifdef hell is on a whole other level. Look at this nightmare to convince yourself: https://geoff.greer.fm/vim/#realwaitforchar
noname120··on Prism
Likewise, I’m now reluctant to use any em dashes these days because unenlightened people immediately assume that it’s AI. I used em dashes way before AI decided these were cool
noname120··on ISO PDF spec is getting Brotli – ~20 % smaller documents with no quality loss
Thanks a lot. Interestingly Brotli’s author mentioned here that zstd is 2× faster at decompressing, which roughly matches your numbers:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46035817

I’m also really surprised that gzip performs better here. Is there some kind of hardware acceleration or the like?

noname120··on ISO PDF spec is getting Brotli – ~20 % smaller documents with no quality loss
Could you add compression and decompression speeds to your table?
noname120··on ISO PDF spec is getting Brotli – ~20 % smaller documents with no quality loss
Ridiculous statement. CDN providers can already use filesystem compression and standard HTTP Accept-Encoding compression for transfers (which includes brotli by the way). This ISO provides virtually no benefit to them
noname120··on ISO PDF spec is getting Brotli – ~20 % smaller documents with no quality loss
Why not use a more widespread compression algorithm (e.g. gzip) considering that Brotli barely performs better at all? Sounds like a pain for portability
noname120··on CLI agents make self-hosting on a home server easier and fun
Mac Mini (M1 and later) under Asahi Linux just uses 5 W for a normal workload. If you push it to 100% of CPU it reaches 20 W. That’s very little.

ValdikSS is the guy behind the SBC XQ patches for Android (that alas were never merged by G). I didn’t expect to see him here with another project!

noname120··on Bose has released API docs and opened the API for its EoL SoundTouch speakers
While laudable, the release of the documentation is completely useless. The protocol is rather simple and was completely reverse engineered already many years ago. In fact it’s already integrated into several open-source home management tools e.g. Home Assistant.

noname120··on Google broke my heart
Everything is redacted by default. You can obtain the full DMCA reports but it requires you to fill in your email on each of them and request them. It’s not impossible but definitely a little more involved than just “read[ing] the DMCA complaints”
noname120··on AWS raises GPU prices 15% on a Saturday, hopes you weren't paying attention
When you need to scale up and down dynamically.
noname120··on More on whether useful quantum computing is “imminent”
I can’t believe how the very first line of the article is a grotesque strawman. Tbh I expected better from Scott Aaronson.
noname120··on More on whether useful quantum computing is “imminent”
What makes it more akin to 60’s general computing development than 60’s fusion power development (that is still ongoing!)? The former is incremental, the latter requires major technological breakthroughs before reaching any sort of usefulness. Quantum computing feels more like there are roadblocks that can’t be ironed out without several technological revolutions.
noname120··on How did IRC ping timeouts end up in a lawsuit?
Yeah but that means that the “court said I’m right ” rhetoric is invalid. It’s as if you said that a no bill or dismissal proved your innocence: it doesn’t.

Now although I have only superficial understanding of the case at stake I believe the author nonetheless (but with a weak certainty until I hear the other side).

noname120··on 2026 Apple introducing more ads to increase opportunity in search results
I hate so much the fact that you can’t disable app store search ads. Like shove ads down users’ throat if you want, but at least give the chance to the ones who can’t tolerate them to opt out. It’s hostile on people with attentional dysregulation such as ADHD people.
noname120··on 2026 Apple introducing more ads to increase opportunity in search results
AdGuard works great, it has a native Safari extension and I don’t see a single ad on there.
