nodemaker··on Yellen says government will help SVB depositors but rules out bailout
We should not take for granted that value can be transferred through time for free and without any risks. When you give another party control of your money (including a bank) they make decisions on your behalf for which there are consequences.
nodemaker··on Yellen says government will help SVB depositors but rules out bailout
Can the banking system learn from this and improve? For sure it can and that would benefit everyone. But we cant retroactively change the rules. In fact you can argue that people would vote more pro-legistation if something like this was allowed to fail like it should and that would protect more people in the long run.

And yes if an insurance fund pays for it then I am all for it. Someone other than the taxpayer has to foot this bill thats all.

nodemaker··on Yellen says government will help SVB depositors but rules out bailout
There is not much difference if you look at it from the point of view that one of those parties was just underestimating the risk they were taking (which is true of all bad decisions in life). I see no reason to bail out depositors over 250k
nodemaker··on Yellen says government will help SVB depositors but rules out bailout
Businesses need to pay their employees from the money they have not from taxpayer money. If a business loses that money because their banking partner lost the money, taxpayers have no obligation to help (beyond the 250k)
nodemaker··on How to approach titling for early engineering hires?
I think the only titles that make sense in a tech org are Software Engineer, Senior Software Engineer, Lead Software Engineer, Engineering Manager and CTO. Everything else is more noise than signal.
nodemaker··on Launch HN: Second (YC W23) – AI bots that add features to web apps
299 per month is reaching for a non battle tested product. At most I would pay 30 usd one time and see what it gives me. Amjad at replit is already building this with a whole bounty thing thrown in so tough market. Good luck to you though. Getting yc investment is already a big deal and i think you can definitely lock on to a niche and find PMF soon
nodemaker··on Introducing ChatGPT and Whisper APIs
Question is...Would your trust for them increase or decrease if they started speaking less openly?
nodemaker··on Introducing ChatGPT and Whisper APIs
Here is a thought experiment for you. First think of the people you trust the most in this world, then imagine if they stopped speaking about whats on their mind with you. Would your trust in them increase or decrease?
nodemaker··on Introducing ChatGPT and Whisper APIs
In general trust is increased when all parties are speaking openly about whatever they are thinking.
nodemaker··on Introducing ChatGPT and Whisper APIs
Not anything racist or illegal but yes I find pc culture insufferable. It stifles creativity and most importantly reduces trust between parties. For context I am an Indian guy.
nodemaker··on I use C when I believe in memory safety
pointing mistakes is the job of the linter, the job of the compiler is to run my program asap and even try to fix my mistakes automatically. There is nothing more pedantic than a compiler saying "Oh you shouldnt do this as it can potentially be a race condition"
nodemaker··on Tech's Elite Hates Labor
In this thread, tech people whining they are'nt paid very well or dont have enough power when literally no one is stopping them from making their own company and making more money. Power belongs to the person that takes it.
nodemaker··on I use C when I believe in memory safety
Dont mind the downvotes, I somewhat agree with you with the the lack of freedom argument (although not quite sure about the larger context around dystopia).

To put it in other words, I want my tools to do whatever I want them to do and not the other way around.

nodemaker··on I use C when I believe in memory safety
Ah yeah that makes sense. I would rather call a single C++ function from Python that calls other C++ functions (or itself). In case of pysimdjson however, Cython makes much more sense.

Overall this is way better than writing everything in Rust.

nodemaker··on I use C when I believe in memory safety
Curious. Which overhead are you referring to for pybind11?
nodemaker··on Ask HN: How do you plan on making money with Open AI API?
Thats almost like saying it would be hard to make money with a website running on nginx. OpenAI/LLM can be a base layer but you can do a lot of stuff on top of that.
nodemaker··on Need help with students who've turned my class into a dating service
People pursue what they are interested in.

How does everyone feel about hiring iOS devs in this environment? I feel like its too hard for SwiftUI devs to pick up UIKit when they get blocked and usually they just give up. Also in interviews junior devs have no clue about AutoLayout or UICollectionViews.
nodemaker··on 30k lines of SwiftUI in production later
Yeah there is a learning curve I admit. Usually you try to change the size of your view and see how things resize.

And yes StackView is your biggest friend. Usually when the system ignores your constraint it says that on the log. It can be a bit tricky to find out which constraint its breaking but the View Debugger and also the constraint constant value can help find it.

For C/C++ Xcode is way better than VSCode in my opinion.

Although I miss github copilot a bit when I do it.

Native platform development is about going as smooth as possible. Otherwise React Native serves very well for mediocre quality stuff.
nodemaker··on 30k lines of SwiftUI in production later
Haha couldnt have said it better.
nodemaker··on 30k lines of SwiftUI in production later
For an expert with some mathematical intuition layout constraints can do a custom layout that lays out perfectly on all screen sizes much better than declarative. However there is a learning curve I admit.
nodemaker··on 30k lines of SwiftUI in production later
Or you can structure your app in UIKit and build custom views and nice animations in SwiftUI. SwiftUI is a nice abstraction but a lot of it is really unnecessarily force fed by Apple because it helps them get more amateur developers into the platform.
nodemaker··on Blogging is not dying anytime soon
“AI” is already vetting your information stream.
nodemaker··on Ask HN: Is building a Twitter fan following really worth it?
Yeah when releasing a product it gives you a huge edge for sure.
nodemaker··on Ask HN: What would be your stack if you are building an MVP today?
My sweet spot is

1.Flask with Postgres for API. 2. C++ with Pybind11 for core performance engine. 3.Whole stack running on a single cloud instance with docker compose. 4.Next.js, Typescript, Tailwind for frontend. 5.Github Actions for CI/CD and deployment to cloud.

The more something looks like GPT the lower it should be ranked. GPT can make that assessment for you in fact.
nodemaker··on Blogging is not dying anytime soon
Haha 100 percent agree! If anything video content is becoming more pseudo intellectual and clickbait everyday in my opinion. My video consumption is way lower than it used to be.

To a certain extent these video platforms create big personalities of normal people and its hard to trust them at that point (although Joe rogan still manages to sound authentic somehow)

That being said, I do think GPT has the potential to ruin blogging but we will see. As soon as I smell even a little bit of GPT in a blog I am probably gonna bail immediately.

nodemaker··on Deepmind is working on a rival to ChatGPT
I wonder why that is since they are both basically using gpt3 as base.
