noasaservice··on Snap Store administrators removed signal-desktop from Ubuntu Snap
Reminder for you Ubuntu people:

Snap is closed source garbage ware, with MS Windows forced updating and the terribleness of being 10x slower....

So here's how to "Snap-Off" your system https://haydenjames.io/remove-snap-ubuntu-22-04-lts/

noasaservice··on Moderation is different from censorship
> Twitter it not the public square, it’s some private company’s arguing arena.

The USA has privatized its public commons, with exception of a library and city hall.

Twitter, Facebook, etc are the 21st c USA public commons. It's where the people are. It's where the local politicians are.

The downside: it's owned by corporate privateers who extract wealth from dissent.

What I'm hearing is there's a hell of a European market to cater to USA and other regions to host apps, and then play hardball in getting real answers.
noasaservice··on Amazon CEO violated labor laws with union remarks, federal agency alleges
And the NLRB punishment will amount to $1000 ?

That govt org has NO teeth. They should be able to bite a billion or 2 for gross violations, and disburse it to EVERY non-management employee and contractor in affiliation with Amazon.

But instead, it's a cost of doing business, and anti-union tactics lives on.

Too fucking bad they don't "like it". I don't give one bit of care to the centimillionaire and up club.

noasaservice··on The only way of being anonymous in Sweden is illegal?
This sounds like it would be great for an embarrassment campaign of tracking all politicians and C-levels responsible for this. Basically, it's the elonjet all over again.

If showing the data is legal, then highlighting specific datapoints should be as well.

noasaservice··on Marijuana users more prone to infections after knee, shoulder surgeries
> Do you mean head change? Basically a dizzy/foggy/rolling feeling mainly in the head.

Yah I never got a gentle dizzy rolling feeling.

Instead it felt like my brain was guitar strings and they were being plucked and vibrating. Then another. And another. They were very sudden, pluck/vibrate, and sped up the longer I smoked tobacco.

I did that pipe for about 20m. They sped up to about 3/second around the 10m mark. They finally quit at the 30m mark (10m after stopping).

I'm sure they slow down with tolerance. I just know I didn't like the feeling even starting.

noasaservice··on Marijuana users more prone to infections after knee, shoulder surgeries
Ah, yeah I know that cigs you inhale, and pipes you let be in just the mouth.

Either way, there were brain pops that were happening around inside my head that I did absolutely not like. Not sure how others describe the nicotine phenomenon. I just know I didn't like that one bit.

noasaservice··on Marijuana users more prone to infections after knee, shoulder surgeries
So it's in line with chewing fingernails, eating chalk, blowing bubbles in bubblegum, and "habits".

Lets be clear what this "psychological dependence" is.

noasaservice··on Marijuana users more prone to infections after knee, shoulder surgeries
I tried doing high grade pipe tobacco twice. I did not like the "brain pops" that occurred. They felt very jarring and really uncomfortable.
noasaservice··on Marijuana users more prone to infections after knee, shoulder surgeries
So many problems with that "study".

"marijuana dependence" - there is no chemical dependence with cannabis. None. Nada. Zilch.

> smoking tobacco was just because of inhaling smoke

The danger is inhaling burnt plant matter along with the slew of crap companies spray on tobacco. Straight tobacco has a VERY DIFFERENT taste and "cleaner". Still not great for you.

And most cannabis is vaped these days. In that way, it's with the THC oil with terpenes. And that profile is very different than burning plant matter, since in a vape it's vaporized oils (and some metal from the ceramic/metal filament).

noasaservice··on My thoughts on the Framework laptop
That sagging, old Wayland is designed like a garbage scow.

I meant to say that it should be hauled away AS garbage!

noasaservice··on My thoughts on the Framework laptop
So framework runs the same sort of half-baked gongkai "blame someone else" business that Pine does?

Well I'm glad I bought a well supported Dell latitude.

noasaservice··on Why are there so few dead bugs on windshields these days?
We're looking at the super-low-bar of doing things like removing known invasive plants as published in the state's DNR. They maintain a yearly list of nasties to remove.

We also don't use any chemicals to do the killing, as so many of those have terrible side effects. Killing larger invasives involves something as simple as "black contractor bag enveloping and tied at base". It captures all the seeds, kills the plant, and provides easy removal.

We also see that a lot of "lawn grasses" are also pretty invasive especially to forests. So, we also try to keep the lawn encroachment from happening..... as much. Ive done the high tech solution of "lay a slab of plywood on the grasses at the edge of the forest"!

We're also designing our garden with local plants in mind, including rarer plants for our area. If/when those flower and seed, we're seeing natives with natives. And the non-natives we bring in are checked for invasiveness.

Basically, it's being low-key stewards to the land.

noasaservice··on Behind TikTok's boom: A legion of traumatized, $10-a-day content moderators
You mean that "Socializing the costs, and privatizing the gains" fails when you start forcing companies to pay for externalities?

And that's social media, pollution, and climate change in a nutshell.

noasaservice··on Why are there so few dead bugs on windshields these days?
I blow them off my wood deck, so they don't rot and damage the wood.

I let them lie on the rest of my 1.6 acres. And the 1 acre that's forested, we're working on trying to de-invasive-ize the forest and try to help rehabilitate it. Its just 2 of us, but we're trying.

noasaservice··on The availability of text generators will force positive changes to education
I'm glad I had a specific teacher in HS for English.

He had us do a positional paper over a topic we were passionate about. Topics were first come first serve. We got them approved. And when everyone was done getting topics, he then said "You are now arguing for the OPPOSITE of what you asked for."

He later explained why he did so. Obviously, the dept had paper requirements... But he also wanted us to learn a topic and viewpoints from all the angles, including ones you would normally dismiss. It was also a learning moment of "understand the issue before making opinions, and then form a well thought out decision".

I've never seen his style before or since.

All these (AirBNB, Uber, etc) e-companies do is take what's illegal, add "internet", and somehow is legal until the authorities can see through the shit-show.

And of course, while the grift is going, the execs and shareholders get rich. But everyone knows when the gig is up. Evidence: https://www.cnbc.com/2022/10/11/uber-doordash-plunge-as-labo...

noasaservice··on ByteDance planned to use TikTok to surveil specific American citizens
Ok.. And?

Facebook does this.

Google does this.

Apple sells hardware to do this to whoever you want.

Amazon is building an Alexa Spy Dystopia.

Uber had/has multiple campaigns to individually track and divert regulator types.

Equifax, even after hacks that resulted in nearly every citizen exposed, still exists and brags about selling wage data to companies.

Our data security, data privacy, and anonymity potential is farcical here in the USA. Someone please explain why yet this tracking should matter to me... past the "iTs a ChiNesE ComPAnY" excuse. Most of my data's out of the wet paper bag.

> I used to defend snap with the idea that it makes sense for some apps, i.e. "firefox" where updating firefox while its running is bad news.

> Except, snap can't update applications while they are running!

What's worse is the unblockable notifications.

And I just de-snapped my xubuntu 22.04 , and doing so upgraded firefox-snap v113 to their repo v116 ! I mean, I thought the purpose was fully updated. Evidently not.

Snap needs to die in a fire.

noasaservice··on Ubuntu 22.10 Kinetic Kudu
Because this matters: https://haydenjames.io/remove-snap-ubuntu-22-04-lts/

I've been getting "Firefox is updating in $time days" as a unstoppable notification, because snap uses highest priority to jam notifications through.

The best is to purge snap completely from the system. And the URL applies to 22.04, but likely also works mostly the same, with possibly more "snap list" crap to remove.

If I could properly administrate snap, and if it followed my settings, I'd use it. But it doesn't provide for ANY sort of reasonable administration nor respectable defaults. So it gets the axe.

noasaservice··on The smash and grab of Kroger-Albertsons
If it gets too bad, that's how you end up with riots, local politicians dead, buildings torched, etc. Food riots are not something you fuck with.... If history has anything to say about that.

I don't think we've seen that scope here in the US... Yet. But given the number of guns, "it's a when, not an if" if the politicians allow extreme food scarcity to happen in a wide area.

noasaservice··on Ask HN: How to deal with regret of not having kids
Marriage is a contract. When things so intrinsic to your core are being denied, you absolutely have a right to reconsider that.

Marriage is not some form of slavery. It's painful to have dissolved... But very doable if the situation is bad enough.

Now the problem with op, is that it appears he is depressed and burnt-out, and is transferring the depression to a biological drive for children. To do this would be unhealthy for everyone, including any children they bring in the world.
