noasaservice··on Bill to ban social media for Texans under 18
Do what thou wilt.

I'll abandon this account and create another. It's not hard to game the "community" here.

And especially since you don't allow deletion of accounts, it's actually a good thing to regularly get new. Thank you for reminding me.

What I would love is a USPS money solution. Extremely low fees, just works, hooked up with USPS. Fraud would be under bank AND mail fraud.

All these companies in this realm are vultures. They add nothing - they just take their cut to do something that should be easy.

noasaservice··on Fast midpoint between two integers without overflow
you can also do

noasaservice··on Fast midpoint between two integers without overflow
I've used

min(x, y)+( ((unsigned int)abs(x-y))>>1);

with no issue.

abs(x-y)is the distance between points x and y. We don't care about order here because of the absolute value. And by its nature, it will always be positive - hence unsigned.

We divide the distance between the points by 2. This always provides a solution that fits in the signed bounds of X and Y once you add to min(x,y).

And it costs an ABS, a subtract, a non-negative bitshift, and a min().

To make it more complete, a switch statement depending on type of input function would be needed to handle the various sizes of numbers. And then it'd be doing the same but for long int->unsigned long int etc.

noasaservice··on Narcissistic Collapse
Perhaps... But I would think that living with someone (even if not by choice for the first 18 years of your life) gives you a much deeper understanding than watching some celeb online and making snap judgements there.

And in my case, all my siblings have deemed that our mother is indeed a narcissist. We're all no-contact with her. We're not docs, so med diagnosis is off the table... But you can definitely be a narcissist without being diagnosed with NPD.

noasaservice··on Narcissistic Collapse
Its always vogue to call out public/popular humans for diseases. Not the best look.

Now, capitalism... now that causes a whole host of problems. If a corporation were a real human, it would be diagnosed as a sociopath. Noam Chomsky did a great work with "The Corporation": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5hEiANG4Uk

noasaservice··on Narcissistic Collapse
> Interestingly, though, the way you talked about inducing collapse reminds me of a Vajrayana Buddhism guru type thing where the guru sometimes punches you in the self-centered weak spot in the context of practices that help you realize self-clinging as the ultimate source of the pain.

That happened to me after I came to a pagan high priestess. I tried to explain my problems.. but she knew already (learned narcissism and other terrible behaviors as a defense - terrible parents). She was able to do a ritual which was a forced ego-death. The ritual was maybe 5 minutes. None of the hollywood trappings. It allowed me to see me for who I am, others for who they were. Basically it reversed much of my extreme ego, and did similar to what Tonglen does... but in a span of a half hour. I broke down at least 5 times with the gravity of what I had done to others in my life.

My case was extreme. And since I explicitly asked, she did so. I asked her afterward the downsides (since I knew I was spiraling downward), and most people just crumble under that. And I'm still eminently grateful she did so.

noasaservice··on Narcissistic Collapse
You're probably right - actually medically diagnosed narcissistic personality disorder is likely very rare diagnosis... Because the people who have that would deign to admit they have a problem. "Its the world that has a problem and they're right."

And if reading https://old.reddit.com/r/raisedbynarcissists/ is any signifier, yeah it's likely rampant. It gets bad there quickly and stays bad.

Even my own mother is one such narcissist. She's tried to bait us siblings against each other. Fortunately, we'll just get on a call or zoom and actually talk. As of now, all siblings have blocked her. Thankfully, we (siblings) all met up for thangsiving, which was awesome. Mommy dearest can go tell herself how great she was, by herself.

noasaservice··on Narcissistic Collapse
Not at all the same thing.

Ego-death can be brought on by yourself, with extreme introspection and seeing yourself from inside your body. The end is realizing your body is not you. This sometimes can be done by situations, but usually done in some branches of psychology, or by an occult practice.

Narcissistic collapse is when the facade of control by a narcissist is collapsed down around them forcefully, and they then have to deal with the fact they are not the center of the universe. This loss of control causes them to spiral inward, and then lash outwardly very violently. They , in almost all cases, lack the capability of addressing the causes of narcissism or the damage they cause others.

When talking of identity politics, the identity of the speaker is included with the content.

It definitely is a variant of an ad hominem logical fallacy (they are X demographic so they must know and represent all X). But critical thinking goes out the window with identity politics.

And if you identify as white (or others identify you as white), you're just wrong. There's even insults of that type: Karen, Chad, Josh. Doubly so if you are or identify as male.

noasaservice··on What if we talked about over-60s’ screen time as we talk about young people’s?
I'm one who did just that - my mom fell into the trap of qanon, trumper, cultist, and worse bullshit. And every time I went over there, she had that idiot box on, blaring foxnews propaganda. I caught her more than a few times down a real rendition of 2 minute hate from Orwell's 1984.

So, I turned on the child filters on her tv and removed foxnews, oann, and a few more. Is it ethical? Well, it's gray for sure. But given how unhinged she was getting, sure, I'll take that hit.

noasaservice··on Life as a door-to-door salesman
It is. Advertisement IN ALL FORMS depends on deprecating (aka: shitting on) real conversation to supplant it with "buy crap".

The more advertisements are present, the less effective they are, and the worse genuine conversations get.

Door-to-door sales relies on people not actually being rude - in fact, it depends on it. And it tries to rush people to rapid hastily thought-out sales by triggering fight or flight. I have no issue in threatening them with criminal trespass and respond in kind if they refuse to leave.

It's a whole other thing if I am looking for X, and I seek people/companies that provide X. That's consensual, and doesn't serve to destroy communication and conversation.

Considering I'm not talking about you personally, nor do I know what things you personally have, that sort of dismissal is pretty pointless.

> Still the devices I currently own are the best devices I ever had.

"Own" - that's the key word here where the contention is. If the entity you bought this thing from still retains control over your thing, that's a rental.

> And the services I subscribe to are incredible services that never even existed before.

Considering you're not naming said "incredible services", it's irrelevant to dispute.

> Free markets are not always providing perfect solutions, but I am absolutely sure government intervention could only worsen the situation, never improve it.

Absolutely sure? That sounds extremely over-simplistic to reduce every possible legislation and governance down to "always sure government intervention worsens the situation".

And part of my recommendations are not needing new laws, but maintaining product truth-in-advertising in the face of remote access. And frankly, if I put in remote control, sold the machine, and then remotely destroyed it, I'd be brought in for felony hacking charges.

But really, the level of discourse of "guvernment baaaadddd" is damned distressing, and unfortunately a result of Reagan's very successful campaign to say that, defund public facing gov orgs, and then point at lack of performance for underfunded orgs, thus doing another round of underfunding.

noasaservice··on Mercedes locks faster acceleration behind a $1,200 annual paywall
Sounds like a great case to forcefully open-source it in court, so that all parties may inspect it.

And naturally, case law as well.

noasaservice··on Mercedes locks faster acceleration behind a $1,200 annual paywall
That's not a step - it's whenever you are large enough or have the right connections to do that. I was talking about large trends of how capitalist thought in the USA is going.

And at this moment in time, the "best" strategy is to milk customers with recurring purchases. And it turns out the value-add didn't work. So feature-removal-and-sell-back recurring purchase is the current phase.

We're seeing that everywhere in IOT, gadgets, kitchen consumer gear, vehicles. Basically, it's the manufacturers exerting control post-purchase with the implicit threat that they can and will brick your stuff.

To put bluntly, we need government oversight over these realms. First-sale doctrine needs to cover "functionality sold at bill of sale". "No bundling" (of additional services that "complete" a thing) also needs to be strongly enforced. And if/when companies do stuff later and remove features (PS3 for an easy example), that they need to be dealt with as if a hacker did that - as C-level ordered felonies with prison, direct massive compensation to the wronged parties, and massive fines (company-ending if need be).

> growth at all cost

Capitalism.

It used to be about making a great product, and people would buy it.

Then it became "We can generate a fake demand with various psychological tricks" to get people to buy it.

Then it became "Give away the razor and charge $$$$$$ for the blades".

Then it became "Buy the thing and subscription and save!"

Then it became "Buy this crippled thing so we can sell you the subscription for recurring income" <- This is where we're at.

Point being, it's not about making a great product. It's about using emotional tricks to get people to buy a thing AND a subscription, to get what 10y ago would have been a lump-sum you-own-it thing.

> Well any particular Mastodon server can end up ruined or with ads.

Too true. And in cases like that, I have already blocked bitcoinhackers.org .

And it's trivial to block individuals OR whole servers from your account. And server admins can block as well to the whole server.

So, sure, go ahead and make a spam-stodon. You'll be defederated within a week.

noasaservice··on Waze Founder Noam Bardin is starting up a Twitter alternative
> Small decentralized communities which users can freely and easily create and manage is the way to go!

That would be the fediverse (Mastodon).

Find a server with people who share your interests, or make your own. Making some VC shithead richer all the while you're gamified with rage and adverts is not what I want to continue doing.

Thankfully, with the Muskpolaypse, that's looking more and more sustainable. We're even now seeing news agencies casually adding their mastodon user.

> To top it off, there’s very little upside to you as a user. Your own data is used against you.

And in Mastodon, data portability is a thing on every server. I can pack up all my data from one to the next.

And, any server that tries to be an advert spreading server will soon get defederated. Spam is not acceptable, at all.

> But judges are not impartial and instead side with the DA/police by default.

Anybody, and I do mean ANYBODY, who has been to traffic court knows the courts are the extension of the cops. Worse yet, in criminal court, judges tell the jury that "being a cop doesnt give any more or less truthfulness or power on their words".

The judges work with with cops and prosecution on a daily basis. They work against you extremely rarely.

noasaservice··on EVs are the least reliable vehicle type: Consumer Reports
I know that the Twitterpolaypse is a separate discussion, but I think it directly impacts Tesla EV's as well.

If Tesla goes bankrupt, your cars will *NOT* work, given how tightly they are integrated with servers at Tesla.

When Musk was forced to buy Twitter, he used significant leverage from SpaceX and Tesla to do so. And from his actions as of recent, he's opening significant legal liability to him and the company, and appearing that he's operating a scorched earth model to "punish" that fact he was forced to buy Twitter.

If the Twitter situation does come to a head vs Eli Lilly and all the other companies that substantially lost billions in blue-checkmark manipulation and the FTC consent decree - I can see an eventuality that Tesla is also substantially harmed.. Leading to vehicles that no longer work.
