noam_compsci··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
I don’t think F500 execs spend as much time looking at monitors and slides as you may think. Also people travel to see them, so face to face is unlikely to be a benefit to them.

Also, it’s a huge expensive gadget in a time of austerity. If your 100+ execs get one of these, it won’t look good to shareholders IMO.

noam_compsci··on Artists must be allowed to make bad work
It depends on both the hit rate (success / attempts), the churn rate (length of time a success is successful for) and finally the output rate (length of time it takes do one attempt).
noam_compsci··on The time when Joshua Bell went busking in the subway, and no-one noticed (2022)
I don’t really follow classical music but frankly I find a lot of buskers really really good. IMO the difference between mega star and random busker is a hell of a lot of luck (and dedication). On pure talent alone, the random lady outside Bond Street today could beat tailor swift.
noam_compsci··on Better to micromanage than be disengaged
Boils down to “need balance”.
noam_compsci··on Amazon will require employees return to the office 3 days a week
I don’t understand two things:

- don’t waste time on random slack chats and emails

- get inspired with random coffee chats and office drop ins.

Lmao

noam_compsci··on Ask HN: What would it take for an AI to convince us it is conscious?
You will never have consensus on this. “Mainstream Science” May agree on something but then politicians won’t. The wide public won’t.

Humanity until recently didn’t think certain people (based on gender, race and ethnicity) were human. There still is no agreed upon definition of “should have rights to exist” and so this is simply not something that can ever be agreed upon.

Take same sex marriage. Many say marriage is a set of intangible beliefs and properties that simply can’t be reproduced unless it follows the dictum of man + woman. No amount of evidence will convince them otherwise :(

Take as another example evolution. People will still say “it’s just a theory”. So even if there is a solid, evidence backed theory of consciousness, it’s not going to be unanimous.

noam_compsci··on Are U.S companies legally obligated to maximize profits for shareholders? (2012)
Yeah the statement is definitely false. But I think there is a private vs public company nuance. Matt Levine of Bloomberg looks at this in an interesting way for public cos. - "everything is securities fraud", where "everything" is any action that impacts stock price. It seems that there is a lot of evidence that in the US, regulators penalises, not the making/not making of profit, but the movement in stock price. If you make $10bn in profit but kill 100 people and the stock price goes to 0, well thats bad mkay.

On the other hand, with private companies, its pretty weird because here they are less regulated over stock price and profit matters far more (unless you are en route to IPO). This results in a tonne of companies that do bad stuff like gouge drug prices etc.

One you introduce this nuance, you get things like the "Texas two step", which J&J made popular, again, recently. The idea of a corporate veil has been long established; a "limited" company is a pool of risk and reward that is isolated and non transferable in the most part. So public companies go through a lot of chicanery to get the best of both worlds - high risk profit max in subsidiaries, and corporate governance to share price max, everywhere else.

noam_compsci··on Why Steam Deck Is One of the Most Significant PC Gaming Moments in Years
Damn this is so true. Might get one just to experience it.
noam_compsci··on Want to Use Chat-GPT for Your Company? Data-Centric Fine-Tuning Is All You Need
Sounds awesome and exactly the solution I as an enterprise buyer want, in order to use this to improve my product or ops.

However, I feel this will be an ultimately shallow attempt at solving the problem. This tech is quite new, I don’t think any non-OpenAI developer will be able to commoditise cGPT in the short run.

OpenAI will likely make a solution like this, but cheaper and better. This is by superior integration.

I can’t question your motives or experience but I am highly skeptical about any “value add” adaptation of chat GPT at this point in time.

I am unity and what is this
noam_compsci··on Ask HN: Employers, why do you want us back in the office?
Not an employer but:

- Older execs are too stuck in their ways

- Busy execs __need__ a work family to rationalise their commitment

- Hard to make a culture when remote

- Hiring is one of the hardest task in most companies and it’s made harder by remote. Not being able to nail onboarding and the face to face getting to know someone can be lethal

- In the 1% of times, when shit really hits the fan, remote is best because you can have zero communication delays, command management etc. As an “exec” these are the moments that you optimise for

- Bad eggs leave such a bad taste in the mouth.

I’m not an employer and not even exec level. So I may be totally off base. Just my observations.

Is this confirmed? I thought it was not so.

noam_compsci··on Show HN: I trained an AI model on 120M+ songs from iTunes
Awesome! Curious how you got access to all the songs?! Did you legit pay for them all?
noam_compsci··on Twitter API Pricing
A request can have 500 tweets in it. Makes it slightly better but still overpriced
noam_compsci··on Ask HN: How do you plan on making money with Open AI API?
1. Buy Microsoft stock.

2. (not me personally) Tuning and personalisation of LLMs. - As a company, I want private data to be combined with internet-scale data so that I can get actionable data - As a company, I want internal identity management to secure who is told what by the LLM that is trained on private data.

3. (not me personally) Quick buck. Skin + API call + marketing = short term cash until people clock on that it is cheaper elsewhere.

noam_compsci··on Google layoffs Jan 20, 2023 – California WARN public records
Yeah totally agree. It’s basically Moneyball but for CS.
noam_compsci··on I want to lose every debate
How self congratulatory. So many people, most people hope and assume they are this way. We all think we are super progressive and smart and just want “growth”. It’s a bit redundant to spell it out. So what? Big clap. You have a growth mindset. You want to embrace “regret”. How intellectual of you.
noam_compsci··on Ask HN: 2 weeks off work, what to do?
Buy and download Elder Scrolls online. Drop me your user name and you can join my clan (depending on where you play it).

You’ll have friends that will fast become family :) it is a challenging but achievable game with a lot of depth.

noam_compsci··on Why do Americans love ice water so much?
From UK and spend a lot of time across the continent. Never get non iced water anywhere.

I feel sad for your teams. I mean this with respect but you should consider management training.

Source? I can’t find anything about this as an addendum to the story. Guardian, verge and NYT just end the story at “account still blocked”.
noam_compsci··on Ask HN: Is it smart to change jobs considering the possible recession? (EU)
Are you mortgage free or is your assumption that cash / partner income will buffer that for the short term.
noam_compsci··on Ask HN: Is it smart to change jobs considering the possible recession? (EU)
Pretty strong words here. Do you have any data to back this up or is it just opinion. I’ve from the EU and it’s been a long time since I’ve seen this actually happen. And even then it’s usually in banking but I presume a HN post is about tech.
noam_compsci··on Ask HN: Is it smart to change jobs considering the possible recession? (EU)
Last in first out is very situational. Note I just moved company for similar situations and so I am obviously bias. Anyway my thinking was: - is this a hyper growth company that has 2-5x its headcount in the pandemic? - is this a unionised workforce?

first point: companies like coin base were rapidly growing into new Geos and verticals. These were teams with maybe a handful of old employees and then a sea of new ones. So when the vertical or geo got axed, just by the numbers a lot of “new” people got axed. Same story for Snapchat (their newish gaming dept) and TikTok (gaming again).

Second point: labour laws are very different to what they were a few decades ago. It’s no longer really expensive to get rid of old employees. I have no data here but my experience is that weakened labour laws have made firing more performance based and you know the performance of your existing work force best. If you move and are seen immediately as the future direction of the company, you are gold dust.

Just my 2 cent

This is entirely fair. Neglecting infrastructure investment is a business choice.

This case was in the news last week. Some dude named Dave took a medical photo of his young son that got flagged as CSAM. His android account was locked with no way of recourse.

At this point doing anything but search and ads with google is like going to a steak house and ordering a lasagne. It’s just not what they’re good at.

This ignores the fact that AGPL has no strict definition of “forking/modifying”.

So, adding text/marketing copy (see user comment on a restaurant app use case) can be seen as a modification.
