niyikiza··on Tyler Cowen is a curator of talent
I wouldn't dismiss his work simply based on that. It's not unusual for blog posts to have notes on how the content is related to the author's other works.
niyikiza··on Python Best Practices for a New Project in 2021
Saying "this marble is red" implicitly communicates that "my opinion is: this marble is red".
niyikiza··on John McAfee found dead in Spanish jail after court approves extradition to US
Nobody "is" anything. People do things. He did some good things, worth praising. He's also allegedly done some despicable things that we should condemn.
niyikiza··on A dwarf planet coming within 11 AU of the sun over the next 10 years
Honorable mention: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNtTylNR7ks
niyikiza··on Trials begin on lozenge that rebuilds tooth enamel
As long as it's disclosed beforehand, I don't see any problem with that. It's not like Amazon coerced the student into the contract: if they had a better funding opportunity they'd obviously have gone for it. This is the best deal they could get and Amazon was also obviously taking a risk: for every successful project, there are hundreds that don't get anywhere.
niyikiza··on Treasury Calls for Crypto Transfers over $10k to Be Reported to IRS
I guess it's an instance of legislative #TODO comments.
niyikiza··on Amazon knew seller data was used to boost company sales
Whenever someone suggests that something be nationalized, I ask myself "Why not create a public version of it?". If the answer is "it cannot compete with the private ones", maybe that's why running it privately is necessary.
niyikiza··on Surprisingly little alcohol can affect heart rate variability
Is there any evidence that alcohol does it that way? Sincere question.
niyikiza··on Facebook deliberately made people sad. This ought to be the final straw (2012)
Perhaps some A/B testing at The Guardian showed that headlines condemning tech giants are more clickable.
niyikiza··on US agencies call for pause in Johnson & Johnson vaccine
Another factor to consider is that COVID is contagious but blood clots are not. The multiplicative (if not exponential) nature of COVID spread makes this a no brainer that the vaccine should be reinstated (and just monitored).

I suspect that what's happening is that these institutions don't think in consequentialist point of view. They are not comfortable with diverting the trolley even if the math checks out.

niyikiza··on How People Get Rich Now
It's an essay. He's expressing an opinion, just like anyone can always produce an alternative narrative.
niyikiza··on Coinbase (2013)
The biggest advantage is that shovels are not worth zero in the event the whole thing crashes (and in a gold rush there is a big chance of that happening, by definition). The idea is to take advantage of the upside (to some degree) but also have your downside limited. It's a risk averse investment advice, not necessarily one for maximizing returns in the best case scenario.
niyikiza··on Coinbase (2013)
A universe where he invested in BTC rather than funding Coinbase may not have BTC at 50k. We can't compare outcomes without taking into account the probability distribution at the time of the investment.
niyikiza··on Robinhood is limiting purchases of stocks: AMC, Blackberry, Nokia, and GameStop
"You can buy candies". We don't have candies. How's that a problem? Obviously it's a logistics problem. It seems like the anger being driven to the wrong people.
niyikiza··on The Michael Scott Theory of Social Class
Is it really the same person?

- Coder/programmer (L1) - Software Engineer (L2) - Entrepreneur [in the software industry] (L3)

niyikiza··on Google Poly is shutting down
Companies discontinue products all the time due to acquisitions, bankruptcy, restructuring or simply re-orienting investment and I've never seen them held to this standard of having to host it somewhere external. I'm not even really sure how that would work.

A commenter here shared an example of a similar product shut down by Microsoft: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remix_3D

Disclaimer: Googler, but in no way connect to the Poly team.

Edit: Added Remix 3D example.

niyikiza··on Thomas Sowell interview
I cannot agree more. I think he's brilliant, and I've learned a lot from his ideas. However, I've seen him in multiple interviews putting forth evidence-free ideas aligned with Republican talk points.
niyikiza··on Universal Basic Income is Capitalism 2.0
Do you have some sort of paper/article/book explaining the idea in detail? I don't think it would be fair to analyze it based on an HN comment.
niyikiza··on Why we won’t be supporting Sign in with Apple
Neat trick. Some websites don't even bother giving you any choice for traditional username/password input though.
niyikiza··on Journalist’s phone hacked: all he had to do was visit any website
I think the problem can be solved by separating the "phone" experience from the "mobile" experience. Phones are these devices powered by a philosophy (and to an extent, a technology) from 3-4 decades ago and day after day we see them ruining the experience of having the internet access from your hands. We need to move from a mobile-phone era to a mobile-internet era.
niyikiza··on Nassim Taleb: A Definition of Antifragile and Its Implications
I've been a fan of Nassim Taleb for a long time. Say what you want about him as a person or his language on Social Media but the man has come with some real original and profound ways to look at the world. "Fooled by Randomness" remains my favorite book from him.
niyikiza··on Ask HN: Tips to bootstrap a B2B SaaS product?
How exactly do you know if a business will be willing to pay for a product?
niyikiza··on Ask HN: Keybase Alternatives?

niyikiza··on “Samsung Rising” goes deep on corruption, chaebols, and corporate chaos
Someone recommended Ha-Joon Chang books on this thread. They are fantastic. You may also want to check out "Asia's Next Giant: South Korea and Late Industrialization" by Alice H. Amsden

niyikiza··on Britain knows it’s selling out its national security to Huawei
It's more like they bought it from us. ARM used to be owned by Westerners. https://www.wsj.com/articles/softbanks-arm-holdings-to-sell-...
niyikiza··on Britain knows it’s selling out its national security to Huawei
I agree. This thread discusses that with a historical perspective: https://twitter.com/mikebutcher/status/1221842546881679360?s...
niyikiza··on Britain knows it’s selling out its national security to Huawei
It all really comes down to being the cheapest option. Huawei has no monopoly on 5G technology. It just has the means (and government support) to make big R&D investments.

This Twitter thread discussed that point of a view a few days ago:https://twitter.com/mikebutcher/status/1221842546881679360?s...

niyikiza··on The Nobel Peace Prize 2019
Nominations are submitted early in the year and he assumed the office in April 2018.
niyikiza··on He Says He Invented Bitcoin and Is Suing Those Who Doubt Him
This. I've seen him being invited to otherwise technically well positioned events/conferences. Sad.
niyikiza··on Nassim Talebs case against Nate Silver is bad math
I read both, and Fooled By Randomness. I would say you stand to gain a lot reading about the older ones as well.
