nixcraft··on Arch Linux turns 20: Small, simple, great documentation
Only 8 month late (this is an old article from 15/March/2022).
nixcraft··on Yahoo Pipes
Another fun story: For the longest time the Yahoo pipes front page had an example pipe that merged search results from various online sites (amazon/ebay/cl). It was made by a former employee and was easily one of the most popular pipes. One day we found out he had his affiliate id in all of those links. We chuckled and moved on[1]

nixcraft··on Meta lays off 11,000 people
All social media companies hire too many folks and now cutting expenses to meet their target for shareholders. Yet, only Twitter seems to get lots of backslashes compared to other FANGS. Why? I wonder if this relates to Elon Musks' ongoing outbursts on Twitter regarding his political and other conservative views. I believe I answered my own questions. Ha!
nixcraft··on Native messaging, Gnome Shell/Extension integration landed in the Firefox snap
Stuff like Gnome Shell Extensions, GSConnect, Plasma Integrations, KeepassXC integration, etc. now working for Firefox.
nixcraft··on Twitter now asks some fired workers to please come back
The whole thing could have been avoided if Twitter/Elon had done it step-by-step instead of terminating staff in bulk. Everyone in tech is reducing headcount, but Elon likes to do stuff on a grand scale. He needs a human Twitter firewall (social media team who can say "NO") to verify each Tweet before sending it, causing chaos every day. But what do I know? I have never been CEO, so I have no idea.
nixcraft··on Searchable List of Mastodon Servers
It would be best if you had users and followers to broadcast messages. Right now, mastodon feels like a ghost town. But who knows? There was a time when MySpace was king. Only time will tell ..

Also, Twitter works because of eyeballs. However, with so many Mastodon instances, people need to learn and find out who the real @nixcraft is. Sorry to say this, but I don't think so; we have an actual Twitter replacement right now. In another six months, someone might build it, or Elon will make it better or send it to /dev/null.

nixcraft··on JC – JSONifies the output of many CLI tools
Last year I looked for JSON output with the dig command on Linux but found the yaml option while reading the man page. It was handy. I always wondered why yaml/JSON output is not standard with Linux and Unix utilities for scripting needs. Anyway:

     dig +yaml google.com
nixcraft··on Shanghai Disney shuts: Visitors unable to leave without negative Covid test
Also, Apple: Chinese workers flee Covid lockdown at iPhone factory https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-63447755 . Elsewhere in India, Apple is up its game. India's Tata to add Up to 45,000 woman workers at iPhone parts plant to deal with the shortage of parts created by zero lockdown policy https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-11-01/india-s-t... . More and more stuff is moving to other parts of Asia. So how long can China keep up with this zero policy as factories move production elsewhere? According to Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COVID-19_lockdowns#Variation_b...), a few countries and territories did not use the lockdown strategy at all: including Japan, Belarus, Sweden, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tanzania, two states in Brazil and certain United States states. There are so many lessons to learn from this pandemic, and I hope future generations of Earth have fewer troubles dealing with deadly pandemics.

Lockdown may be a temporary solution. The long-term solution is to maintain better hygiene (masks, washing hands) and get the vaccine without turning into political drama all over Twitter.

nixcraft··on Why you can’t trust CPUID
Here is what:

     ls -l /proc/cpuinfo
It says (basically it is a pseudo-filesystem with read-only permission, so I don't think so it is possible without making any changes at the Linux kernel/driver level):

     -r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 28 09:38 /proc/cpuinfo
nixcraft··on Why you can’t trust CPUID
For those who are not using Windows as the main daily driver: On Linux, you can just run the `lscpu` command, which reads info from the /proc/cpuinfo file, but there is a CPU-X[1] GUI app too. Free software gathers information on the CPU, motherboard and more. Similar to CPU-Z for Windows but works on Linux and FreeBSD. It isn't possible to trick /proc/cpuinfo on Linux, it always gave me the correct info.

nixcraft··on Apple Rejected Spotify's App Update Adding Audiobook Support
Half of my apps don't need to be a dedicated apps on my phone. Instead, they can build an excellent mobile-first web app and be done with this Google and Apple app store tax. But, they won't be able to collect info about you then? Right? Even newspaper site asks to download their stupid app.
nixcraft··on Tomorrow the Unix timestamp will get to 1,666,666,666

nixcraft··on Cloudflare Pages: Best server tech since CGI-bin?
They have a product for that https://www.cloudflare.com/pg-lp/speed-up-wordpress-with-clo... It caches all pages on Cloudflare and only bypasses Cache on Cookies such as `wp-.|wordpress.|comment_.|wordpress_logged_.` which is used by /wp-admin/ are and when someone posts a comment. This turns your WP into static without doing anything special. Or you can write a custom cache rule for cookies using "Page Rules" or newly introduced "Cache Rules" beta https://developers.cloudflare.com/cache/about/cache-rules/

Also check - a WordPress plugin for static site generation and deployment https://github.com/WP2Static/wp2static

nixcraft··on How the ‘black death’ left its genetic mark on future generations
>It's been discussed in many places on the internet before, but CGP Grey has a lot of profound misunderstandings around

It is not just CGP Grey; other popular channels also share tons of misunderstandings and stuff related to tech or science. I believe YouTube also favours popular channels because of the high likes and comments. They dominate both Google and YouTube searches. I started noticing this around topics like Firewalls, RPis, Linux, Coastal Erosion, Global Warming, open source etc. The reason why top YouTubers are popular is because of their presentation style. It would be best if you did your research using multiple sources. Ask a question to university professors on Twitter (or email them), and they will happily guide you to the right resources. At least, that is how I do it and it worked better for me. YMMV.

nixcraft··on Against DNSSEC (2015)

nixcraft··on CloudFront vs. Cloudflare, and how to reduce response times for both (2021)
Price is the main difference between AWS CloudFront/Fastly and CF. In most cases, CF prices are fixed, like $200 for business or $20 for the pro plan. If you like fixed prices VMs from Linode or DO, chances are high that you will like Cloudflare too. Of course, advanced addons features like CF Argo and CF Bot management cost more money at Cloudflare too.
nixcraft··on Brave browser now blocks cookie banners
The cookies banner in the EU, California and other countries is just a failure to address real issues. That solves nothing. I have seen FB and Google able to track you despite cookies blocked with Adblock/script block, including PiHole. Just the other day, I was getting some visa info to visit friends in the USA next year and later opened FB and immediately saw ads related to visas and immigration ad from a legal firm. With or Without cookies, these companies have developed tech to track everyone.

The only thing is you don't see ads or banners with these extensions, but somehow they track you using advanced fingerprinting for sure.

nixcraft··on We're moving away from swap partitions on our Linux servers
The main problem is my little VM powered by CentOS or Amazon Linux 2 (which is based upon Fedora Linux) runs out of memory when I run "yum update". I have 1 core CPU with 512MB ram. The BaseOS repo from RHEL and co is just too big. It requires a minimum of 3 GB RAM. So work around is to add swap to AWS EC2/Lightsail instance. I believe there is a dnf bug open in RHN, but no progress was made so far https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2040170 Adding a 4/8GB swap space file solved my problem with the `yum update`. That is just one example. There are many users with few resources.
nixcraft··on Everyone going to World Cup must have this app, experts are sounding the alarm
It happens everywhere, from the developed countries to the far east. You have zero rights when crossing the border at immigration control, especially when your passport is weak or they believe you will not leave the country. They log into your IG and WhatsApp and check everything. Otherwise, they will deny entry. They made it legal. Sometimes a person has nothing to hide but nerves first time traveller and gets sucked into that void too.

Do you know the worst part? Once you unlock your phone and give them your passcode, they take it away and tell you to wait. So now have no idea what they are doing with your phone. Would you trust that device? That is why a burner phone is needed, I guess.

nixcraft··on TuM'Fatig – Ads blocking with OpenBSD unbound(8)

nixcraft··on ThinkPad’s 30th Anniversary: An Insider’s Perspective
Lenovo ruined the ThinkPad reputation. They try so hard with unwanted features from Apple. If I need those features, I will get MacBook Air or Pro. The legendary brand, once known for reliability, now comes with RAM stuck to the motherboard. Not to mention overheating and a weird bug for Linux power management. The best ThinkPads are older ones. You can get them from eBay and install Linux on them. The newer ones are not worth my money and time. YMMV.
nixcraft··on Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro
Pixel phone gets monthly Android updates, plus you can test all new feature ahead of anyone else as soon as Google push updates. You get a plain Android experience, too. But, of course, Samsung is a fine phone. I am considering getting Galaxy Flip Z 5 as 5 G is now available in my town.
nixcraft··on Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro

nixcraft··on Musk Proposes to Proceed with Twitter Deal at $54.20 a Share
Buy it already and be done with all drama. Let us see how Elon turn Twitter into a good or bad product ;) I am unsure if it is some master stroke or just, you know, another pump and dump schema. Maybe lawyers finally told Elon there is no exit strategy, and it is best to stick with teh original deal. Perhaps he finally figured out what to do with Twitter or got rid of cold feet. Who knows?
