nineplay··on Pete Hegseth shared Yemen attack details in second Signal chat
There is a long history of people getting betrayed by spouses and siblings. He may trust his wife and brother but the rest of the US has no reason to share that trust.

> Do you really think the security breach in this case came from his wife or brother

I don't think it's out of the question.

Well you are doing a poor job of conveying it if your two biggest pain points are "git master" and "quantum supremacy".

God help us this is the way all of these conversations have gone over the last 8 years.

Group A: "You are gutting our scientific research infrastructure, a entity that has provided tremendous benefit to scientific progress worldwide and has been a source of national pride!"

Group B: "Yea well some tech companies voluntarily changed the name of their git branch from 'master' to 'main' so you all had it coming."

There's nothing I can do with that, except hunker down and hope all the horrors of this are felt by someone else.

> How can you have a successful, rich country when you're antagonizing your allies and roughly half of your citizens.

You do it by defining 'success' as 'people in the top get complete control, everyone else gits nothing'.

The site's moderation isn't going to change because it's in no one's best interest except a bunch of us posters who don't bring in any money.

The flagging has become de facto censorship for HN and I really thought this is the last place I'd see it. Why is this OK except that some people with influence don't want topics hitting the front page? Should we forgot that PG is yet another tech billionaire who probably is pretty happy with the way things are going right now.

Everyday my paranoia increases, every day I become more of a conspiracy theorist. It's us vs. the people who can outspend us a million times over and we can't fight back. Why should any news organization tell the truth if lying gets them a fat paycheck. Why should anyone in charge of any public forum allow controversial topics to get posted when they can make a fat paycheck by blocking them?

nineplay··on Harvard's response to federal government letter demanding changes
The demands of the administration are the demands of a bully who doesn't want your lunch money, he just wants you to know he can take it away at any time.
nineplay··on Harvard's response to federal government letter demanding changes
What specifical threat to our nation are they trying to defend against?
nineplay··on Harvard's response to federal government letter demanding changes
I promise you right now that no one in the Trump administration is interested into providing more books to local schools. Quite the opposite
nineplay··on Trump temporarily drops tariffs to 10% for most countries
I don't buy it anymore. The billionaires are in charge and we can't fight them. Best thing do is run and hide.
nineplay··on Trump temporarily drops tariffs to 10% for most countries
I like to believe that no other countries are kissing his ass and all the calls were from the few true patriots that are hiding out in his administration.

"Hello President Trump, I am the leader of Bigorgia. I know you are a big strong manly man and I will beg you to stop the tariffs please."

But I agree, Xi Jinping is a real strongman, not a sad old man with delusions of grandeur.

nineplay··on Trump temporarily drops tariffs to 10% for most countries
Permanent damage has been done to our relationships with countries that have always been our allies.

Permanent damage has to our economic markets, since everyone now knows that everything can change on the whim of a single man.

Permanent damage has been done to any reputation we've had as a supporter of democracy worldwide now that we've abandoned our support of Ukraine.

Permanent damage has been done to our own faith in our country. Any pride I had in our values and democracy has slipped away, now I know that they were all illusions.

nineplay··on Justice Dept. scales back crypto cases in line with Trump administration memo
I think the media continues to sane-wash him. The AP news headline of his recent meeting with Mark Rutte was

"NATO secretary-general tells Trump he’s motivating alliance members to spend more on defense"

It doesn't say anything about Greenland. It should have because Trump continued to push it:

""We've been dealing with Denmark, we've been dealing with Greenland, and we have to do it. We really need it for national security. I think that's why NATO might have to get involved in a way, because we really need Greenland for national security. It's very important," Trump said."

From Reuters, which seems to be doing a moderately better job.

"Trump wants to control Greenland" along with "Trump threatens to annex Canada" should be at the top of every headline because its complete insanity. No one voted for this, no one wants this, if Biden had said it or Obama had said it or any president had said it at any time every they would have become a laughing stock and every politician and voter would have risen up against them.

But it gets swept under the rug, in the same way all his insanity gets swept under the rug. Where were the headlines when he openly admired Arnold Palmer's penis? Nowhere, instead we got "Trump attacks Harris on immigration".

I've got my explanations but they all make me sound like a raving conspiracy theorist. Nevertheless, its my only explanation. This is what happens when its us vs. the billionaires. They can always outspend, and everyone really only cares about the bottom line.

nineplay··on Trump temporarily drops tariffs to 10% for most countries
My takeaway from what I've read and heard in the last few weeks is that his only actual motivation is to 'win'. He bragged yesterday that other countries are kissing his ass to negotiate deals on the tariffs. I think that was all he wanted, I think he now thinks that this whole tariff thing was a success and he's going to move on to the next crazy idea.

The rest of us suffer for it, except for the sad portion of the republican party who's only motivation is to own the libs and who now are congratulating themselves on how thoroughly the libs have been owned.

nineplay··on Sweetener saccharin shows surprise power against antibiotic resistance
I'm specifically sympathetic to kids who are not ( in the US ) given coffee or tea or alcohol and still get scolded about having anything but water. I've been there, it gets dull.
nineplay··on Sweetener saccharin shows surprise power against antibiotic resistance
That is an impossibly stupid way to look at it. Food is not just a bunch of numbers on a label.
nineplay··on Sweetener saccharin shows surprise power against antibiotic resistance
Nothing is wrong with drinking only water. Nothing is wrong with drinking something besides water.
nineplay··on Sweetener saccharin shows surprise power against antibiotic resistance
I agree but no one makes headlines or sells books by talking about nuance and moderation so we get terrible advice from magazines and 'professionals' and all get steadily less healthy.
nineplay··on Sweetener saccharin shows surprise power against antibiotic resistance
I drink water in the US every day just fine, I don't think there's anything cultural going on here.

No one drinks coffee or tea or beer or wine in Italy? Pop culture has deceived me.

nineplay··on Sweetener saccharin shows surprise power against antibiotic resistance
I don't entirely disagree but my kid was with me and I feel like I need someone now to reassure her that blending doesn't magically remove vitamins from food.

( I asked her if blending tomatoes for sauce removed the nutritional value but that's different for reasons that no one understands. )

I'm with you. Eat a variety of food and as close to the natural source as possible. If you think that orange juice and mountain dew are the same because of sugar content than you've lost the plot.

nineplay··on Sweetener saccharin shows surprise power against antibiotic resistance
Because no one wants to drink water all day every day and nothing else.
nineplay··on Sweetener saccharin shows surprise power against antibiotic resistance
People below you in this thread are saying that fresh squeezed orange juice is little better than Mountain Dew. Something about nutrition makes people lose their minds.
nineplay··on Sweetener saccharin shows surprise power against antibiotic resistance
The 'no fruit juice' thing really got on my nerves when my kids were little since people just throw it out with no qualifications. So really, if I cut up some oranges and squeeze the juice into a cup I can't give it to my kid because fruit = sugar = bad? It's such a reductionist way to look at food and nutrition.

I also recently had a PT tell me that blending fruit into smoothies removes all the nutritional value, which is why no one should get nutritional advice heath professionals who are not nutritionists.

nineplay··on Doge Is Trying to Gift Itself a $500M Building
No, nothing vaguely critical of the current administration is allowed here now. Astonishing really, I didn't think it would happen on HN of all places.

nineplay··on Doge Plans to Rebuild SSA Codebase in Months
I had lunch this week with some former coworkers.

When I'd started working with them it was on the 20 year old C++ engine that ran everything.

Even at that time there was large team 'rewriting' it in Java. That team was dissolved about 2 years later.

During the course of my employment two more large teams were spun up to do a rewrite and then came crashing down after a year or two.

I hadn't seen my coworkers for about 7 years. Naturally they were still working on the C++ code. Naturally they'd seen two more rewrite teams come and go while I'd been gone.

I'm not sure why I'm bringing this up......

nineplay··on Changing Forecasts for Python Questions on Stack Overflow
Alas that it is not unusual for python questions to be "Marked as Duplicate" because the same question was answered 10 years ago for Python 2. Python questions bring out some of the worst features of SO and some of the best features of Gen AI.
nineplay··on With AI you need to think bigger
One of my more effective uses of AI is for rubber duck debugging. I tell it what I want the code to do, iterate over what it comes back with, adjust the code ( 'now rewrite foo() so 'bar' is is passed in'). What comes back isn't necessarily perfect and I don't blindly copy and paste but that isn't the point. At the end I've worked out what I want to do and some of the tedious boiler-plate code is taken care of.
