any comparisons with RudderStack?
nikhilalmeida··on Show HN: interviewing.io is out of beta and open to engineers of all levels
I agree that the site is amazing. It is especially useful since you can take a day off and schedule multiple phone screens in a day. This enables you to get to a point to be able to line up the onsite interviews close to each other, which is what you want to do to get multiple overlapping offers.

The only disadvantage is that the site did not have enough mid to senior positions and very little focus on positions for engineering manager and above.

nikhilalmeida··on Show HN: News Extract API – Pull structured data from online news articles
Curious what the economics are there in working like this?

* What is the market size of developers companies that pay to have such wrapper APIs?

* What would pricing for something like this look like?

* What is the hit / miss ratio of API ideas?

I was thinking of putting together datasets and listing on similar marketplaces. Anyone have any information to share on this?

The H1B transfer premium processing is currently temporarily suspended (till Feb). This means anyone wanting to change employers, will have to risk joining on H1 transfer receipt alone. Are there any ways / advice to reduce the risk of switching employers.
nikhilalmeida··on Open-sourcing MonkeyType – Let your Python code type-hint itself
reasons (advantages) for using python (or any other dynamic lang.) when in startup mode is more than just typing. Similarly the advantages of continuing to use python outweigh the costs of doing this little "type-dance".

Hi, Recently there was a proposal to do away with Employment Authorization for H4 visa holders. What are some of the next steps you would suggest we take.

nikhilalmeida··on Side projects
I learnt by starting to cook Indian food when I moved here. A lot of Indian food has the same set of spices and similar procedures. Soon I realized that I can experiment with the ingredients and vary the spices to change flavor and it did not have an adverse impact on the final outcome. That caused me to loose the trepidation of experimenting in the kitchen and I do it with all cuisines now. And it has worked out well, cause I generally can manage to put a meal together with whatever is left in the fridge.
nikhilalmeida··on Free Python Books
This is a collection of real world python projects written in 500 lines or less. https://github.com/aosabook/500lines The goal was to be a resource for intermediate python developers to be able to look at real world applications. Hope this helps.

Took this course as part of my 2014 new year resolution. Among the best things I could have done.
nikhilalmeida··on A Cautionary Tale of Learning to Code
I think C is good to know and try if you are going through an academic program in school. For a lot of people just starting to learn to code (while juggling other responsibilities/jobs/etc), learning C upfront can be an overkill. Being able to implement your idea as soon as possible will be of utmost importance. Sure they can dabble with a little more deeper understanding of language internals and theory once they feel confident enough in the one toolset they have chosen.

This is a collection of real applications that are written in 500 lines or less. The goal is to teach python through real projects that are not too complicated to understand.

Hope this helps.

nikhilalmeida··on Ask HN: What project would you work on if you had half a year of free time?
I came across this yesterday (probably on HN) http://betterexplained.com/cheatsheet/ I plan to read through all of this in my free time.
nikhilalmeida··on Ask HN: How best to learn software design principles?
https://github.com/aosabook/500lines This is a repo of smaller real world applications that are 500 lines or less in length, so as not to be overwhelming to novice / intermediate programmers.

nikhilalmeida··on What to do if you're just semi-technical?
I was pretty much like the OP (from Georgia Tech too), although I graduated with a masters in CS, so I had that to back me up at interviews. I hated programming as I worked at companies large and small writing code in java (mainly tweaking spring configs) and have spent the last few years trying out for different product management positions with no luck. I realized that I did not like it much, was because I was fighting the system every time as I did not have the basics right. (I barely could get myself round a linux box). I have since made it my priority to get my fundamentals right and started reading the basics of everything as if I was getting into programming from scratch. I feel it has helped. Also it happened that my current job required me to learn to code in python. Ever since I started working in python coding has been very pleasurable and fun. Also the ability to quickly have an impact and be useful gives me the thrill rather than just writing a bunch of integration tests. Anyways Im not sure why this is relevant, but felt like putting this out anyways.

Maybe add the ability to expand and minimize explanations like the ones used in code editors to minimize blocks of code. Love the tool
nikhilalmeida··on Poll: Do you select text while reading?
I feel that is a vary tech-person oriented habit. A gut feeling tells me the poll results will be very different among non techie folks. I remember my parents getting annoyed with my highlighting when helping them read family emails.
nikhilalmeida··on The Best
agree. Also the time spent on researching about getting the best, is orders of magnitude more than the time lost worrying about a 'reasonably good' item.

nikhilalmeida··on City Layout Design: A programmer's perspective
The problem with organically grown neighborhoods is that it is difficult to build efficient public transportation that connect them, hence I was going for planned ones. More than half the cities population will live in the satellite areas, there by making it cheap and efficient to run subway lines 24x7. Also I believe the dead space problem will take care of itself as demand for space increases.
nikhilalmeida··on City Layout Design: A programmer's perspective
Thanks for the resources. Good analogy with software engineering. I would say that deciding the layout and large infrastructure would be analogous to selecting the technology stack. Allowing the buildings and neighborhoods to evolve would be the learn/evolve as you go, agile approach.
nikhilalmeida··on City Layout Design: A programmer's perspective
the major reason was to keep the city structure simple and repeatable, so as to reduce learning. This is one of the issues I found when my parents (even friends) visited NYC, the subway maps were too intimidating.
nikhilalmeida··on City Layout Design: A programmer's perspective
The center radius can be quite large say 8 miles. I currently live 3 miles from LAX and never hear a plane. But yes another idea would be to have most of the warehouses towards the center, which will make distribution easier.
nikhilalmeida··on City Layout Design: A programmer's perspective
Thanks for this. I have just drawn what I felt from a traffic congestion avoidance perspective. I should give it a thought from an environmental perspective also and try to re-iterate on the design. Thanks for the feedback.
nikhilalmeida··on Ask HN: Would you agree bad UI does not mean bad UX?
This site is a prime example of it. Its UI is pretty crappy looking, but does provide a pretty good experience.
