Me: "How can a programming language be so damn complex? Am I just dumb?"
Not that I really want to defend Signal (XMPP FTW!), but the legal threats were about using the Signal name, not making an unofficial client per se. I know a bit about it because I develop an alternative signal client (a signal-XMPP gateway to be more accurate). That said, they don't help 3rd party client devs at all.
(was there a question in it?)
Now I also wanted to re-use this interface for some websites I visited, and the easy way to do that was to configure rules in foxyproxy to use a socks proxy for that, which is where soks come into play.
I don't doubt that wireproxy is useful to many!
I use it for nextcloud, github and my microsoft account (it was really buried in the settings but it is possible to avoid using MS auth something app).
The only thing I want for my kids besides them being happy, is that their happiness does not depend on the misery of other human beings. Funnily enough, "success" is often used as a synonym for "being a sociopath born with a silver spoon who does not give a damn about not making others miserable".
Also, I think it would make sense to base this on XMPP or ActivityPub, for federation and interop with other services.
Clarification in case it's needed: I absolutely agree that making fun of someone's accent when they come to you is a best inappropriate, and more often than not utter bigotry. But I'm concerned about criminalising humour. This might not be a widely-shared idea (especially in the anglosaxon world?), but I even believe that racist jokes can be tools against racism, decredibilising racism and not actually oppressing the minority in question. Of course, again, context matters.
(clarification #2: I don't believe "cancel culture" is a thing, if you do racist jokes in the public sphere and someone calls you out for saying something racist, I don't believe anyone has been "cancelled")
When I think about my atari 1040ST and what it could do with a single core running at a few Mhz and a few hundred kilobytes of RAM, it makes me realise how wrong we've gone with smartphones.
(before someone mentions it, I know that my atari didn't have wifi, couldn't play full HD videos, etc, and that it was harder to develop software for it, but still, something's off IMHO)
And yet, if musicians being able to pay the bills is your concern, saving what you pay to spotify and buying a few albums on bandcamp instead is possibly the way to go.
From https://neurodifferent.me/@clowncollege/109994297731928004 :
> I've been a professional musician since the end days of selling CDs, and I would like to say that having experienced the decline of CD sales because of piracy transition into the paid streaming era it's unambiguous that musicians were better off when mostly everyone was pirating and then some people bought CDs or other merch out of a desire to support vs today when everyone pays a nominal fee to a corporation that pays us nothing and also satisfies their desire to support despite not actually offering support.
Fair point. I'm a dreamer ;)
I believe the lack of great clients for apple platforms is due to how little the overlap is between people who see value in using a self-hosted, federated, lightweight chat system and people who want to use apple products.
